Abstract  Vitamin D-dependent rickets type II (VDDR-type II) is a rare disorder caused by mutations in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene. Here, we describe a patient with VDDR-type II with severe alopecia and rickets. She had hypocalcemia, hypophosphatemia, secondary hyperparathyroidism, and elevated serum alkaline phosphatase and 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3. Sequence analysis of the lymphocyte VDR cDNA revealed deletion mutation c.716delA. Sequence analysis of her genomic DNA fragment amplified from exon 6 of the VDR gene incorporating this mutation confirmed the presence of the mutation in homozygous form. Thi...

War's effects on health can be much harder to identify than death and horrendous physical injuries. The US department of veterans affairs recently accepted that Vietnam war veterans may have developed B cell leukaemias, Parkinson's disease and ischemic heart disease as a result of exposure to a blend of herbicides known as Agent Orange, a defoliating agent sprayed by US warplanes to deprive their enemies of cover.Similarly, ionising radiation from the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 led to medical complications such as cancers, nausea, hair loss, bleeding into the skin, inflammation of the mouth and ...

Conclusion: The development of many HRQoL parameters after the first treatment modality in an unselected population of patients with primary lung cancer seemed, at large, well correlated to general disease progression and to well-known treatment side effects. However, reduced role function after lung surgery, and reduced anxiety and depression in patients with mood disorders at baseline might be surprising. Patient satisfaction with treatment was surprisingly good. Several findings in this study may help clinicians to improve their handling of patients with lung cancer. Conclusion A higher prevalence of hypertension in women with androgenetic alopecia has been found. The elevated aldosterone values in these patients may contribute, alongside other mechanisms, to the development of AGA and may also explain the higher prevalence of hypertension. Blood pressure screening of women with AGA will permit earlier diagnosis of an unsuspected hypertension and initiation of appropriate treatment. Topical immunotherapy with contact sensitizers for metastatic melanoma was first reported more than 30 years ago. We now report DPCP treatment of a further six patients with cutaneous metastatic melanoma. Of seven patients treated with DPCP thus far, four have demonstrated complete responses of their cutaneous lesions and three have had partial responses. The treatment wa...

Twelve patients with nonresectable advanced gastric cancer were treated with NACT regimens consisted of docetaxel, cisplatin, fluorouracil, plus leucovorin before operation. Abstract  Mitoxantrone (MTX) is a synthetic antineoplastic cytotoxic drug, active both on proliferative and non-proliferative cells. The efficacy of MTX has been suggested by many open-label or observational studies and demonstrated in four randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs). It is indicated for reducing neurological disability and the frequency of clinical relapses in patients with progressive relapsing and worsening relapsing–remitting MS patients. The short-term most frequent adverse events observed in RCTs have been nausea/vomiting, alopecia, an increased risk of urinary and respiratory tract ...

Abstract  Cyclophosphamide (Cy) is an alkylating agent used over the past 40 years to halt rapidly progressive forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). High doses of Cy produce marked immunosuppression and an anti-inflammatory immune deviation. Cy is most effective in young patients, with very active MS (frequent relapses, rapid accumulation of disability, and gad+ lesions on brain MRI). Monthly intravenous pulses of Cy for 1 year, followed by bimonthly pulses for the second year are a well-tolerated protocol in MS. Most side effects (mild alopecia, nausea and vomiting, and cystitis) are transient, dose de...

Dermatological examination is critical for the evaluation of lupus erythematosus. The hospital says it contacted all 206 patients affected by the CT scan error. But some tell The Times they were only asked about hair loss and not told of the mistake or its potential cancer risk. Cedars-Sinai Medical Center did not tell all 206 patients who received radiation overdoses during CT scans of the hospital's error, according to the accounts of four people who said they only came to understand what happened to them through news reports. CONCLUSIONS: Non-platinum and non-paclitaxel gemcitabine-containing doublets demonstrate similar overall survival and RR compared with the standard PC regimen. However, the treatment arms had distinct toxicity profiles. PMID: 19833819 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Ann Oncol)

The performance of doxorubicin encapsulated in chitosan-dextran sulphate microparticles in an osteosarcoma model.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common primary bone cancer affecting children and adolescents. It is potentially debilitating and fatal due to pulmonary metastasis. A common management strategy, chemotherapy, has a 10-year disease-free survival of approximately 60%. However, a targeted approach to OS tumor inhibition is still lacking, calling for improved management strategies. A frontline drug for OS, doxorubicin (DOX), causes multiple side-effects (example myelosuppression, heart failure, hepatic toxicity, alopecia) in patients, especially in high doses required to control tumor growth. A drug delivery system (DDS) was...

MicroRNAs take part in pathophysiology and pathogenesis of Male Pattern Baldness.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Male Pattern Baldness (MPB) or androgenetic alopecia is a common form of hair loss with androgens and genetics having etiological significance. Androgens are thought to pathophysiologically power on cascades of chronically dramatic alterations in genetically susceptible scalp dermal papillas, specialized cells in hair follicles in which androgens react, and finally resulting in a patterned alopecia. However, the exact mechanisms through which androgens, positive regulators of growth and anabolism in most body sites, paradoxically exert their effects on balding hair follicles, are not yet known. The role of microRNAs, a...

Weekly administration of docetaxel and epirubicin as first-line treatment for hormone-refractory prostate carcinoma.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Androgen-independent prostate carcinoma (AICP) is one of the tumors that continue to respond poorly to chemotherapy. Recently, protocols based on the use of docetaxel have significantly improved survival for patients in this disease. In other types of neoplastic disease, combined therapy with taxanes and anthracycline derivatives has been shown to produce additive effects in terms of growth inhibition, and superior tolerability when associated with weekly administration schedules. These findings prompted us to examine the tolerability and efficacy of weekly treatment of AICP with docetaxel (DOX) plus epirubicin (EPI). ...

Conclusion: The assessment of quality of life in brain cancer patients through ratings from their significant others seems to be a feasible strategy to gain information about certain aspects of patient's quality of life and symptom burden, if the patient is not able to provide information himself. Modulation of Vitamin D Receptor Activity by the Corepressor Hairless: Differential Effects of Hairless Isoforms.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
In conclusion, we have demonstrated that both HR isoforms are expressed in keratinocytes and that the HRDelta1072-1126 isoform lacks corepressor activity and is unable to bind HDACs. HRDelta1072-1126 may function as a coactivator in some settings by inhibiting HDAC recruitment to the VDR transcriptional complex.
