We are excited about the first annual meeting of the Alzheimer's Association International Conference on Alzheimer's Disease (ICAD). Held in Vienna, Austria, in July 2009, this was the third largest ICAD on record in terms of attendance, and the second largest in a non-U.S. location, drawing nearly 3800 scientists from 74 countries. More than 1500 abstracts were submitted, illustrating that the field of Alzheimer's disease (AD) research is at a most exciting and productive time. In fact, between 2000 and 2008, scientific abstract submissions to ICAD nearly doubled. These exciting, pre-publication reports contain the increm...

Closing the dementia care gap: Can referral to Alzheimer's Association chapters help?email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Abstract: The quality of care provided by primary-care physicians for patients with dementia remains poor, in part because physicians do not provide counseling and education. Local Alzheimer's Association chapters have the potential to improve the quality of care provided for dementia, but are hampered by a lack of referrals from primary-care physicians. Many physicians remain unaware of the services available through Alzheimer's Association chapters, but recognize the need to provide support to families, ensure patient safety, and manage behavioral problems. At present, systems to promote referrals and communication with ...

Abstract: The past 30 years have seen multiple attempts at demonstrating the safety and efficacy of drugs for Alzheimer's disease (AD), predominantly to improve symptoms. Only five drugs (tacrine, donepezil, rivastigmine, galantamine, memantine) have obtained regulatory approval in most countries. Their cost-effectiveness from a societal perspective has not been universally recognized, and anybody who thinks these drugs are useful for individual patients will have to agree that the improvement above the starting point of treatment is moderate. Most of the benefit has been in slowing down progression of symptoms rather than...

Abstract: The Everyday Technologies for Alzheimer's Care initiative was launched by the Alzheimer's Association and Intel Corporation in 2003 to identify and fund promising research in the use of technology—especially information and communication technologies—for monitoring, diagnosing, and treating Alzheimer's disease. At the last two progress meetings, scientific leaders of the two partners, together with aging health technology academic scientists, met to review the most recent research and discuss how current and developing technologies can address growing needs in Alzheimer care. Conclusions: In a patient sample predating the widespread use of cholinesterase inhibitors, we found that approximately one fifth of individuals with AD demonstrated periods of prolonged cognitive stability. This significant interindividual variability must be considered when providing prognostic information to families and when assessing individual patient responses to pharmacotherapy. We advise caution when assessing results of potentially disease-modifying agents at the individual patient level. (Source: Alzheimer's and Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association)

Conclusions: The pattern demonstrated in our AD group was similar to previously established hypoperfusion patterns by using positron emission tomography and ASL-MR. Our preliminary results demonstrated the ability to detect differing perfusion patterns between AD and control groups and showed signs of correlation with global cognition, even with a small sample. The ability to noninvasively acquire a quantitative measure of CBF gives ASL-MR promise as a biomarker in AD. (Source: Alzheimer's and Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer's Association)

Conclusions: The project's mixed-methods research design has challenges and complexities. However, the resulting data will support comprehensive analyses that allow a better understanding of the types of services and their features that produce better outcomes for people with dementia. Background: This partial replication study tested the effects of a best practice model of dementia care, the Family Involvement in Care (FIC) intervention, in an Australian residential care setting. Originally trialled and implemented in North America with successful outcomes, this intervention sought to establish therapeutic partnerships between family (n = 30) and staff caregivers (n = 31). On-road assessment for people with dementia: How to achieve the Goldilocks point (not too easy, not too hard, but just right)email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions: Design of on-road assessments influences driver errors. Overall driving performance must be judged in relation to the on-road assessment characteristics. Adequate samples of task items are needed. Weighting of scores should account for errors ”forced” by the design (eg, being ”caught” by the traps) versus ”unforced” errors that result from poor driving habits or from critical dementia-related driving failure. A community-based exercise program to improve cognitive function in people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease: Feasibility and safety studyemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions: This pilot study demonstrated that the exercise program for people with dementia, developed at the Launceston General Hospital, is both feasible and safe. A larger randomised, controlled trial is now underway to assess the impact of the program on cognition, physical functioning, behaviour and sleep in people with dementia. Conclusions: A formal scale for diagnosis and assessment of CCD is presented with clinical, cross sectional and longitudinal validity. Its use will aid diagnosis and management of canine ‘dementia’ and will also aid translational research between transgenic rodent models and human clinical trials.
