The carbon footprint of a surgical pathology laboratory in France
CONCLUSIONS: The pathology laboratory's carbon footprint was equivalent to the yearly carbon impact of 11 French inhabitants. This footprint is dominated by inputs and associated freight. This suggests an urgent need to develop ecodesign and self-sufficiency in our routine practices.PMID:38470223 | DOI:10.1093/ajcp/aqae022 (Source: American Journal of Clinical Pathology)

Analyzing clinical laboratory specimen rejection rates at a specialized hospital in Ethiopia: A 2-year document review
CONCLUSIONS: This study emphasized a significant incidence of specimen rejection, particularly in the hematology laboratory, underscoring the need for immediate implementation of corrective actions and preventive measures. Furthermore, conducting comprehensive larger-scale studies is recommended to deepen our understanding of and investigate the specific factors contributing to specimen rejection in greater detail.PMID:38459898 | DOI:10.1093/ajcp/aqae019 (Source: American Journal of Clinical Pathology)

Cardiothoracic operating room blood gas workflow performance improvement initiative
CONCLUSIONS: A multidisciplinary team with key stakeholders is important to address complex care issues. Performance improvement methodology is critical to develop interventions that hardwire the process. This intervention led to a sustained reduction in secondary relabeling of patient samples and improved timeliness of reporting of blood gas results.PMID:38460972 | DOI:10.1093/ajcp/aqae014 (Source: American Journal of Clinical Pathology)

A 5-step root cause analysis model for test overutilization: A study on its application to plasma transferrin testing
CONCLUSIONS: This study presents a 5-step RCA model that offers a customized method to identify the causes of test overutilization. Applying this model to transferrin at our institution revealed 22 leading root causes. Laboratories are encouraged to adopt this RCA model as it can contribute to optimized patient care and more efficient resource allocation.PMID:38447167 | DOI:10.1093/ajcp/aqae015 (Source: American Journal of Clinical Pathology)

Analysis of editor in chief gender and associated journal variables among 126 pathology journals
CONCLUSIONS: Women are significantly underrepresented among editor in chiefs across pathology journals. Journals and affiliated members should advocate for diversity among these influential positions, given their impact on research, science, and medicine.PMID:38437878 | DOI:10.1093/ajcp/aqae018 (Source: American Journal of Clinical Pathology)
