ConclusionsIn our study, black patients had poorer hypertension control, and providers were more likely to intensify antihypertensive drugs at visits of black compared with white patients as appropriate. These data suggest that more research is needed to understand racial disparities in hypertension control.American Journal of Hypertension 2009; doi:10.1038/ajh.2009.201.

ConclusionsIn conclusion, to our knowledge it has been proven, for the first time, that there is a decrease of FASN expression in hypertensive individuals. The clinical significance of this work represents an exciting challenge because it would need to be clarified whether the reduced values of FASN expression may be associated with hypertension or whether this is an adaptive mechanism to the presence of hypertension. Once this aspect is clarified, it could be a new target for the treatment of hypertension.American Journal of Hypertension 2009; doi:10.1038/ajh.2009.178.

Differential Effects of Reduced Cyclic Stretch and Perturbed Shear Stress Within the Arterial Wall and on Smooth Muscle Function.

ConclusionsWe have found that the remodeling process triggered by reduced compliance in the endothelial region of large conduit arteries has a more profound detrimental effect to smooth muscle function than that brought on by perturbed shear stress. This work provides new insight by suggesting that although mechanical stimuli such as cyclic stretch and shear stress are known to augment similar markers of vascular remodeling, the location of their expression throughout the vascular wall differs greatly and this can have dramatic effects on vascular function.American Journal of Hypertension 2009; doi:10.1038/ajh.2009.193.

This narrative review focuses on outcomes related to proteinuria in hypertension (HT), and also examines the role of current and future therapeutic strategies. Proteinuria is an independent marker of renal and cardiovascular (CV) disease in hypertensive populations, particularly in high-risk groups such as diabetic patients. Effective blood pressure (BP) control and proteinuria management are associated with significant improvements in the risk of key adverse outcomes, although a causative relationship needs careful assessment. Available antihypertensives have varying effects on proteinuria reduction. Drugs affecting t...

The idea for a workshop focused on sodium and health was generated by the editors of the American Journal of Hypertension and the Chinese Journal of Hypertension as part of their emerging collaboration. It reflects a belief that scientists and clinicians interested in blood pressure and its related conditions would profit from more effective communication and interaction. Salt was chosen as a central topic because of its multiple physiological and pathological effects, its importance to human health, its role in elevating blood pressure, the unresolved scientific issues, and the absence of an agreed public health respo...

ConclusionsDemography and number of new cases of MHT have not changed dramatically over the past 40 years. Five-year post-MHT survival has improved significantly, possibly related to lower BP targets, tighter BP control, and availability of new classes of antihypertensive drugs.American Journal of Hypertension 2009; doi:10.1038/ajh.2009.153American Journal of Hypertension 2009; doi:10.1038/ajh.2009.153.

ConclusionsPrehypertension increases mortality risk (all-cause and cardiovascular) in individuals who are free of diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Nevertheless, this relationship is not evident in individuals with narrow pulse pressure. Therefore, pulse pressure may be a relevant measure of blood pressure for the definition of normal blood pressure.American Journal of Hypertension 2009; doi:10.1038/ajh.2009.151American Journal of Hypertension 2009; doi:10.1038/ajh.2009.151.

ConclusionsWe concluded that (i) baseline BP and BP responses to CPT had strong genetic determinants; (ii) baseline BP and BP response to CPT did not share the same genetic components; and (iii) BP reactivity and recovery shared the same genetic components. These findings may lead to a better understanding of the genetic mechanism of BP responses to CPT.American Journal of Hypertension 2009; doi:10.1038/ajh.2009.139American Journal of Hypertension 2009; doi:10.1038/ajh.2009.139.
