Abstract Enterococci and Salmonella were isolated from feces of chicken in intensive poultry farms and cattle which are maintained following traditional practices.
Their resistance to different antibiotics was also determined. A total of 298 enterococcal isolates consisting of Enterococcus faecium (49.6%), Enterococcus durans (26.9%), Enterococcus hirea (11.9%), and Enterococcus faecalis (11.5%) were obtained. Among the enterococci, resistance to erythromycin (Ery), clindamicin (Cli), amoxicillin (Amo), ampicillin
(Amp), and cephalothin (Cep) was high. Resistance to vancomycin (Van) was detected in all enteroc...

The effect of various environmental factors on the stability of aqueous solutions of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid combination in a veterinary water-soluble powder product was investigated. In the swine industry, the combination is administered via the drinking water, where both substances are quickly decomposed depending on several environmental factors. The degradation rate of the substances was determined in solutions of different water hardness levels (German hardness of 2, 6 and 10) and pH values (3.0, 7.0 and 10.0), and in troughs made of different materials (metal or plastic). Increasing the water hardness decreas...

Conclusions: Sequential therapy using "rabeprazole and amoxicillin 7 days followed by rabeprazole, metronidazole and levofloxacin for 7 days" is a new regimen with acceptable eradication rates in naïve patients in Turkey. Further modifications in the dose or duration of this new sequential therapy might increase its effectiveness as both first and second line treatment. (Source: Helicobacter)

Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns and beta-lactam resistance mechanisms of 544 H. influenzae isolates through the nationwide Acute Respiratory Infections Surveillance (ARIS) network in Korea during 2005 and 2006 were determined. Resistance to ampicillin was 58.5%, followed by cefuroxime (23.3%), clarithromycin (18.7%), cefaclor (17.0%), amoxicillin/clavulanate (10.4%), and chloramphenicol (8.1%). Levofloxacin and cefotaxime were the most active agents tested in this study. beta-lactamase production (52.4%) was the main mechanism of ampicillin resistance, with the rate (96.1%) of TEM-1 type beta-lactamase. According...

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacteria that is resistant to most common antibiotics. Aside from methicillin, the bacteria is also resistant to other more common antibiotics such as oxacillin, penicillin, and amoxicillin. Staph infections, including MRSA, occur most frequently in patients who have recently been hospitalized for long periods, who have had invasive medical procedures, or who have weakened immune systems. Individuals treated in long-term healthcare facilities such as nursing homes or dialysis centers have been considered most at risk. In a healthcare setting, MRSA can cause serious an...

Conclusions Dental prescribing errors should be considered as a potential area for improvement in the medication management process and
patient safety. We suggest that a pharmacist should be available for medication dispensing at all units and that dentists
are trained continuously so that medication orders may become more legible and complete. Improving the quality of dental prescriptions
will reduce the risks for medication errors and will promote the rational use of pharmacotherapy, and patient safety.

Gellan gum has been reported to have wide pharmaceutical applications such as tablet binder, disintegrant, gelling agent and as a controlled release polymer. Multiparticulate delivery systems spread out more uniformly in the gastrointestinal tract and reduce the local irritation. The purpose of this study is to explore possible applicability of gellan macro beads as an oral controlled release system of a sparingly soluble drug, amoxicillin. Gellan gum beads were prepared by ionotropic gelation with calcium ions. The effect of drug loading, stirring time, polymer concentration, electrolyte (CaCl2) concentration, curing ...

Among the AMP(R) isolates, 66.9% were resistant to >/=5 antimicrobials and 4.9% to >/= 10 antimicrobials. Co-resistance to other beta-lactams was noted for amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (55.5%), ceftiofur (50%), cefoxitin (50%), and ceftazidime (24.7%), whereas less than 5% of isolates were resistant to pi...

Semin Liver Dis 2009; 29: 400-411DOI: 10.1055/s-0029-1240009ABSTRACTGenetic studies on drug-induced liver injury (DILI) have proved challenging, both because of their rarity and their difficulty in replicating observed effects. However, significant progress has now been achieved by both candidate-gene and genome-wide association studies. These two approaches are considered in detail, together with examples of DILI due to specific drugs where consistent associations have been reported. Particular consideration is given to associations between antituberculosis drug-related liver injury and the “slow acetylator” g...

Eradication of a cause of secondary membranous glomerulopathy might suppress nephrotic syndrome. Here we report a patient with membranous nephropathy (MN), whose proteinuria entered complete remission after treating actinomycosis. A 45-year-old woman presented with nephrotic syndrome and was diagnosed as having MN. Her urine protein excretion was 5.3 g/day and the serum creatinine level was 70.7 µmol/L. When we searched for causes of secondary MN, pelvic actinomycosis was detected. After removing the pelvic abscess surgically, we administered amoxicillin for 6 months. Then, her proteinuria had decreased to <0.1 g/...

The objectives of this study were to compare the prevalence of Clostridium difficile (Cd) among different age and production groups of swine in a vertically integrated swine operation in Texas in 2006 and to compare our isolates to other animal and human isolates. Results are based on 131 Cd isolates from 1008 swine fecal samples and pork trim samples (overall prevalence of 13%). The prevalence (number positive/number tested in production type) of Cd was different between the groups (P</=0.001), and was highest among suckling piglets at 50.0% (61/122), followed by 23.8% (34/143) for lactating sows and effluent from the ...

In this study, we investigated the impact of neonatal amoxicillin treatment on the development of the murine intestinal Lactobacillus community. Suckling BALB/c mice received a daily intragastric gavage of amoxicillin or saline from postnatal day 7 (PND 7) to PND 20. Just after the treatment (PND 21) and 5 weeks later (PND 56), the colon digesta samples were analyzed by Lactobacillus-specific quantitative real-time PCR analysis and PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE) technique. Real-time PCR results showed that the levels of lactobacilli in the treatment group were similar to those in the control at PND 56. ...

Conclusions Treatment with sequential iv/po moxifloxacin monotherapy once daily is clinically comparable to that with iv/po amoxicillin/clavulanate
three times daily in the management of cSSSIs. Moxifloxacin’s simple dose regimen offers an advantage over amoxicillin/clavulanate
and represents a valuable addition to current antibiotic regimens used in the treatment of cSSSIs.

Globally, pneumonia is the leading cause of death among children and also results in significant morbidity. The most common treatment options include anti-pyretics and antibiotics. Other treatments include vitamins and over-the-counter cough syrup. This overview presents a summary of the results of previous Cochrane reviews on the treatment of community acquired pneumonia (CAP) in children. The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews was searched for all systematic reviews examining the treatment of pediatric pneumonia or lower respiratory tract infections. All reviews that were under the heading "pneumonia" on the Cochrane ...
