A novel inhalation challenge set for the study of experimental allergic alveolitis (hypersensitivity pneumonitis) in mice was designed. A finely dispersed aerosol of allergenic extract generated by the commercial ultrasonic nebulizer "TAJFUN MU1" (produced by Medbryt, Warsaw, Poland) was transported to the airtight inhalation chamber. In the chamber were placed 15 perforated containers made of transparent plastic, each containing one mouse. They were coupled in 3 units, each consisted of 5 containers. The constant flow of aerosol through the chamber was assured by commercial vacuum pump "PL 2/3" (AGA LABOR S.C., Warsaw...

The paper analyses the causes and mechanisms of death, the possibilities of providing effective emergency assistance, and the regulations for work safety on the basis of two lethal accidents at work in storage equipment. The death mechanism, i.e. asphyxia due to respiratory tract obstruction by a loose foreign substance prevents effective emergency assistance unless aspiration has not yet occurred. The deciding factor is how soon the rescue procedure begins. The safety-at-work regulations should emphasize the need for worker protection by the assistance of another person.

The effect of the insecticide fipronil on non-target organisms was studied on rat brain slices and identified giant neurons of the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis. This compound acts as an antagonist on GABA(A) receptors. Although fipronil has moderate mammalian toxicity, our experiments confirmed that it modifies neuronal excitability in the rat somatosensory cortex. The amplitudes of evoked field potentials increased significantly after 30 min fipronil treatment. Short-term plasticity was examined with paired-pulse stimulation, this phenomenon was not affected by fipronil. On the other hand, the efficacy of LTP-inductio...

Traditionally, allergic contact dermatitis (ACD) has been associated with the activity of Th1 lymphocytes that secrete interferon gamma. Recent evidence indicates that other cells, e.g. interleukin 5 (IL-5)-secreting Th2 or Tc2 cells may be among the key effectors of ACD. The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of nickel-specific IFN-gamma secretion (marker of Th1 and Tc1 activity) and IL-5 secretion (Th2 and Tc2) on the clinical outcome (patch test score) in nickel-allergic patients. 40 women with suspicion of ACD were involved, aged from 14-54 (median 31.5) years. They were patch tested with NiSO(4)....

The life transmission cycle of B. burgdorferi requires migration of spirochetes from tick?s gut to its salivary glands during vertebrate?s blood sucking, penetrating to the vertebrate?s tissues and their colonization. A special feature of these bacteria, despite its relatively small genome, is the ability to adapt in different host environments. These unusual properties of borreliae are associated with large number of plasmids, which show a high variability as a result of recombination with each other. Changes in the synthesis of outer proteins are the first strategy of borreliae in avoiding the destructive effect of t...

Chlamydophila infection is known as an occupational hazard to veterinarians, farmers, poultry workers. Serum levels of the soluble Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 (sIC AM-1), is associated with C. seropositivity. Since no data about IC AM-1 levels and C. psittaci infection are known, the aim of this work was to assess if chronic persistent C. psittaci infection constantly stimulates the expression of sIC AM-1, independent of the characteristic symptoms of ornithosis. C. psittaci seropositivity and serum concentrations of sIC AM-1 were investigated in 30 farmers and 20 age-matched healthy public employees as controls....

This study aimed to analyse the dependence of ergosterol and trichothecene production in oat grain on environmental conditions. Three oat cultivars were cultivated in 10 localities across Poland under natural conditions of fungal infection. Analysis of the effect of weather conditions during the growing season on ergosterol content and total trichothecene Fusarium toxin content in grain showed that they are negatively correlated with the sum of precipitation in the dry month of June, i.e. at the flowering stage of oats. Significant rainfall in July (256 % multiannual average) resulted in a considerable growth of saprophyti...

The aims were to examine the prevalence of stress among Finnish full-time farm entrepreneurs in 2004 (n = 1,182) and to compare the results with those for the general working population in 2003. The second aim was to analyze which factors were associated with the prevalence of stress. A stratified random sample of farm entrepreneurs gathered from the farm register was surveyed using computer-assisted telephone interviews. A binary logistic regression model was used to analyze the association with background factors. One third (34 %) of the examined farmers had experienced stress. This amount was lower than among the ge...

In the presented work, six Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato isolates were recovered from Ixodes ricinus ticks and one strain of spirochete with uncertain taxonomic position isolated from Culex pipiens mosquito collected in the Valtice area (South Moravia, Czech Republic), as well as representative type strains, were further characterized by ribotyping and whole-cell protein fingerprinting. The ribotype patterns obtained with HindII and EcoRV ribotype patterns showed good correlations with the recently proposed genotypes and grouped each genospecies in a well-separated cluster. The wholecell protein profiles of genospeci...

A comparison was made between the efficiency of low doses of peracetic acid (PAA: 1.5 mg/l) and chlorine dioxide (ClO(2): 1.5 and 2.0 mg/l) in the disinfection of secondary effluents of a wastewater treatment plant. Peracetic acid was seen to be more active than chlorine dioxide and less influenced by the organic content of the waste. Both PAA and ClO(2) (2.0 mg/l) lead to a higher reduction in total and faecal coliforms and E. coli than in phages (somatic coliphages and F-specific RNA bacteriophages) and enterococci. Detection of faecal coliforms and E. coli should therefore be accompanied by a search for these more r...

The objectives of this study are to investigate firstly, the biochemical changes in the blood and secondly, histomorphometric changes in the hippocampus of adult mice following dermal application of chlorpyrifos in sub-toxic doses. Male Swiss albino mice (60 days) were segregated into one control and two treated groups (n=10). Chlorpyrifos, diluted with xylene, was applied in doses of 1/2 of LD(50) (E1) and 1/5 of LD(50) (E2) over the tail of mice of the two treated groups, 6 hours daily for 3 weeks. AChE levels in the serum and brain were estimated using a spectrophotometric method (Amplex Red reagent). Coronal serial sec...

Enteroviruses belong to the Picornaviridae family and are the smallest, nonenveloped viruses known to infect both humans and animals. The spread of enteroviral infections is mainly by the faecal-oral and oral-oral route, but also through direct contact with secretions from ophthalmic and dermal lesions. Water, food and soil contaminated by infected feaces are an exogenous infection source which creates many opportunities for the transfer of the infection, and cause an epidemic outbreak in a short period of time. Enteroviruses are being isolated from all types of water: ground, sea, sewage and fresh water environments b...

This paper reports the results of a cross-sectional study on the growth of Fulani children, aged 6 months-15 years, living in Kwara, Ogun and Oyo States, South western Nigeria. This population of Fulani are fully settled pastoralists whose economy and culture are now centred on cattle and farming. There is a dearth of information on the prevalence of malnutrition in this group. We measured the heights and weights of 164 girls and 167 boys and determined their anthropometric indices, height-for-age (HA), weight-for-height (WH), and weight-for-age (WA) Z-scores. The prevalence of stunting (HAZ < -2), wasting (WHZ <...

The specific structure of dental units favours the presence of biofilm and microbial contamination of the dental unit waterlines (DUWL) water. The ability of bacteria to colonize surfaces and to form biofilm in water supply tubes, including DUWL, is a common phenomenon, which has been well documented, just as with difficulties in biofilm removal and prevention of its regrowth. Microorganisms from contaminated DUWL are transmitted with aerosol and splatter, generated by working unit handpieces. On the basis of the detailed literature review, the state-of-the art knowledge of the microflora of dental unit waterlines is p...

Discussion and conclusion: Endotoxin exposure in Dutch sewage treatment workers was relatively low. Comparison of sampling and analytical techniques suggests that the LAL-assay did not result in much exposure misclassification. It thus seems justified to perform filter measurements in combination with the LAL-assay to measure endotoxin exposure in sewage treatment plants.

Polichloride vinyl (PCV) is a widely used thermoplastic polymer, also in the production of medical devices. In the present study we assess the influence of EDTA in vitro on the biofilm structure formed by Staphylococcus epidermidis isolates on PCV biomaterials (Nelaton and Thorax catheters). The 6 strains of S. epidermidis were isolated from nasopharynx of hospitalised patients. It was found that all isolates were able to form the biofilm on both PCV biomaterials, irrespective of adhesion properties (cell surface properties, ability to slime production, minimal time needed for adhesion). The EDTA showed bacteriostatic ...
