Abstract A 21-year-old male having a history of 4 years of working at a denim factory as a sandblaster was diagnosed with pulmonary
silicosis and he was also an active smoker. Productive cough, dyspnea on effort, night sweats, and weight loss in a short
period of time were his complaints. Chronic occupational exposure to tiny particles of silicon dioxide can stimulate parenchymal
inflammation, collagen synthesis and, ultimately pulmonary fibrosis called silicosis. A typical history of exposure and chest
X-ray is usually enough for diagnosis. No effective treatment exists except supportive care. Although...

Abstract Soft tissue sarcomas are a highly heterogeneous group of malignancies that arise from mesenchymal tissues. Grading of soft
tissue sarcomas is an important prerequisite for the choice of therapy and estimation of prognosis. However, incisional biopsy
of huge soft tissue sarcoma lesions frequently fails to provide an accurate diagnosis when there is a benign component, cystic
changes and/or necrosis. MRI is helpful in evaluating the extent of the sarcoma lesion, vascularization, invasiveness and
integrity of surrounding tissue, but definitive differentiation of benignity and malignancy is not possible...

Abstract In spite of the sharp increase in both private and government R&D fund, the number of newly approved medicines for market
had decreased since the 1990s. This is attributed to a large extent to the bottleneck in the critical path arising from the
great disparity between animal model in pre-clinical trial and human model in clinical trial. This bottleneck may be expected
to be gotten rid of by change in paradigm of drug development based on microdosing, which is enabled by radiation-related
imaging technology. However, this is impossible without being accompanied by interdisciplinary joint researches,...

through the distal quarter including the lower oesophageal sphincter is normally less than 2 seconds and that transit tends
to be slower during the first 4 seconds after onset of swallowing.

Abstract N-isopropyl-p-[123I]iodoamphetamine (IMP) has been commonly used as a cerebral blood flow tracer, but, significant clearance of IMP from the
brain to the blood causes underestimation of cerebral blood flow (CBF) as compared with true CBF when the conventional microsphere
model method is applied. Previously, we reported an “Autoradiography method” (ARG method) for measuring CBF by using IMP in
which this clearance effect was corrected. This method was based on a two-compartment model (influx: K1 efflux: k2, K1/k2 = distribution volume of IMP (Vd)), the K1 (corresponding to CBF) being obtained from...

Abstract Soluble radioaerosols such as technetium-99m diethylene triamine pentacetate (DTPA) permit simple quantitative studies of
alveolar-capillary permeability to be performed, since the submicronic aerosols are deposited mainly at the lung periphery
and are cleared across the alveolar-capillary membrane. Regional alterations in permeability can also be noted using this
radionuclide technique. We have measured the pulmonary epithelial permeability in normal subjects and the alteration in smokers,
in glue-sniffers, in patients with inhalation burns, in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and in pa...

This study proposes a new solution for the quantification of rCBF pixel-by-pixel using PET and15O-H2O. The method represents an application of weighted integration that uses PET image only, requiring no input function of arterial
blood. It generates the rCBF image quickly and automatically. Simulation studies revealed that the calculation of rCBF was
fairly stable as long as a relatively shorter scan frame time and longer scan time were selected. Calculated images of actual
PET study by this method correlated significantly with those identified by the dynamic/integral method. Because this procedure

patients presenting with a clear pathology on MRI and a corresponding EEG focus, ECoG could be avoided if the interictal rCBF-SPECT

Abstract The effect of T4 non-carrying thyroxine binding globulin (TBG) on free thyroxine determination using the microencapsulated antibody method
was studied, to investigate the precise reliability of the membrane and to find possible applications for estimating other
free steroid hormones. When increased amounts of purified TBG were added to a test tube containing microcapsule suspension,
it affected the accuracy of the results. We found that with higher amounts,125I-T4 leaked through the membrane into the medium, thereby giving a falsely increased free T4 result. Our finding indicates that further improve...

Abstract We evaluated the potential of sodium [1-11C]hexanoate (11C-HA) as a radiopharmaceutical with which to assess oxidative metabolism of the brain by PET.11C-HA, sodium [1-14C]acetate and [3H]deoxyglucose were simultaneously injected into mice under control, hypoxic and starving conditions. In the control, the
brain uptake of11C was maximal at 3 min (% ID/g = 2.2–2.5), being twice as high as that of14C, followed by a gradual clearance. The time-radioactivity curve of11C was similar to that of14C. Hypoxia enhanced the brain uptake of3H, but not of either11C or14C. Starvation enhanced the brain uptake of3H...

Abstract Thallium-201 SPECT was performed to evaluate a pulmonary lesion in a 73-year-old male which had been considered to be an inflammatory
lesion for two years. The lesion has slowly increased in size on x-CT. Tl-201 was intensely taken up and retained in the lesion,
suggesting a malignant lesion. Histological examination revealed that the lesion was bronchioloalveolar carcinoma. This case
suggested that Tl-201 uptake of pulmonary carcinoma would not be necessarily related to cell growth rate.

Abstract A case with recurrent hyperparathyroidism secondary to chronic renal insufficiency is reported. The patient had undergone
total parathyroidectomy and autotransplantation of parathyroid tissue five years ago. Bone scintigraphy clearly demonstrated
skeletal involvement of secondary hyperparathyroidism and99mTc-methoxyisobutylisonitrile scintigraphy clearly demonstrated a hyperfunctioning parathyroid autograft.

Abstract Captopril renography (CRS) with99mTc-DTPA and99mTc-MAG3 was performed on a 21-year-old woman with renovascular hypertension due to right renal artery stenosis caused by fibromuscular
dysplasia. In the affected kidney, the renogram pattern was substantially changed with99mTc-DTPA and99mTc-MAG3 following the administration of captopril, and the quantitated renal uptake indicating individual renal function was
significantly decreased in99mTc-DTPA and slightly decreased in99mTc-MAG3. In the contralateral normal kidney, the renogram showed some minor changes with both radioagents, while the quantitated

Abstract Radionuclide angiogram (RNA) and aortogram may underestimate external aneurysmal diameter. Photon deficient areas are not
uncommon along the abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) on RNA. To determine whether or not photon deficient areas along the aneurysm
could represent a large thrombus, we studied radionuclide aortic angiography in thirty-eight patients during a preoperative
cardiac gated study. All the patients (men, ages from 60 to 78) had CT, US, and/or aortogram for comparison. The presence
of a thrombus was determined by CT, US, and/or surgical findings. Twelve of 38 (32%) patients’ RNA and bloo...

Abstract Tc-99m-DTPA captopril scintigraphy was performed in a patient with suspected renovascular hypertension. Markedly impaired
right renal function (Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) values for the right kidney = 14 ml/min, left kidney = 79 ml/min) was
detected in the initial captopril study. Only lower pole activity of the right kidney was observed during the whole study.
Since prior ultrasonographic examinations have shown bilateral normal kidney parenchyma, branch stenosis of the right upper
pole was suspected. Besides significant function improvement in the following baseline study (GFR values for the...

Abstract The present study examined the role of myocardial fatty acid in patients with idiopathic cardiomyopathy (DCM) by means of123I-β-methyl-p-iodophenyl pentadecanoic acid (123I-BMIPP) scintigraphy. Thirteen patients underwent123I-BMIPP imaging,201Tl imaging and echocardiography. All patients showed defective myocardial uptake of123I-BMIPP and201Tl. The left ventricular end-diastolic dimension (64.1 ± 7.3 mm vs. 55.6 ± 1.5 mm, p < 0.05) and end-systolic dimension (52.4
± 8.0 mm vs. 40.6 ± 2.1 mm, p < 0.01) were significantly larger in the large defect group (123I-BMIPP defect score (DS) > 8) t...
