One gram of soil is an immense biochemical gene library producing diverse genetic instructions, which have been present for almost 4 billion years on the Earth. There is sufficient DNA in 1 g of soil to extend 1,598 km. However, this is certainly an underestimate for fertile soils. Can the amount of genetic information contained in one g of soil be accurately estimated? Isolation of Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio splendidus from captive-bred seahorses with disease symptoms.

Vibrio species isolated from diseased seahorses were characterized by PCR amplification of repetitive bacterial DNA elements (rep-PCR) and identified by 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequence analysis. The results demonstrated that Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio splendidus were predominant in the lesions of these seahorses. To our knowledge, this is the first time that these bacterial species have been associated with disease symptoms in captive-bred seahorses.

Bacteria not proficient in nitrogen fixing symbiosis were proven able to invade root nodules of three wild legumes of the genus Hedysarum in Algeria and to be multiplying in these in place of the natural rhizobium symbionts. The plant pentacyclic triterpenoids, oleanolic and ursolic acids, inhibit the growth and survival of many bacteria, particularly Gram-positive species, including pathogenic ones. The effect of these compounds on the facultative human pathogen Listeria monocytogenes was examined. Both acids affected cell morphology and enhanced autolysis of the bacterial cells. This study aimed to determine whether the gyrB gene can discriminate between type strains of the genus Kribbella. Previous studies, in the genus Micromonospora, have found that a gyrB-based genetic distance of 0.014 correlates to a DNA relatedness of 70% and that those strains with a genetic distance of greater than 0.014 are likely to be distinct species. Here we report the effects of starvation and insect age on the diversity of gut microbiota of adult desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, using denaturing gradient gel electrophoretic (DGGE) analysis of bacterial 16S rRNA genes. An extracellular alpha-glucosidase produced by Aspergillus niveus was purified using DEAE-Fractogel ion-exchange chromatography and Sephacryl S-200 gel filtration. The purified protein migrated as a single band in 5% PAGE and 10% SDS-PAGE. In this study two model aspergilli, Aspergillus nidulans and Aspergillus ochraceus were used to study the effects of ozone on spore germination, sporulation and biomass production. These effects were examined under three levels of ozone; two high level ozone exposures (200 and 300 mumol mol(-1)) and one low level exposure (0.2 mumol mol(-1)). A novel antibiotic 210-A, named as (6S,8aS,9S,11S,12aR)-6-hydroxy-9,10-dimethyldecahydrobenzo[d]azecine-2,4,12(3H)-trione, was isolated from the fermentation broth of Streptomyces noursei Da07210, its structure was unambiguously established by spectral analyses and chemical comparison with related cycloheximide. Experiments demonstrated that 210-A bore strong activity against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense race four (Foc race four), which also showed antitumor activity against SMMC-7721 human hepatocarcinoma cells and S180 murine sarcoma, and the IC(50) values were 0.77 and 0.74 microg/ml, respectively.
