ABSTRACT Since the Greek Aellus Galenum (129 AD - c.200/c.216), vertigo was considered a problem attributed to a cerebral disorder, diagnosed as the manifestation of apoplectiform cerebral congestion. In the mid-19th century, the Frenchman Prosper Meni ère changed this concept by placing the origin of this symptom in the inner ear. The main objective of this historical note is to highlight who Menière was, his work, and some aspects of the disease that bears his name.RESUMO Desde o grego Aellus Galenum (129 d.C.

Post-stroke aphasia in famous writers: when Neurology left geniuses speechless
ABSTRACT Aphasia is a frequent and devastating stroke complication that does not spare even great writers. In these cases, not only one of the highest cognitive functions is suddenly lost but also the act of bringing beauty into the world. Herein, we discuss the case of three writers who had to abandon their art compulsorily due to a cerebrovascular disease: Charles Baudelaire, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Stendhal. They were magnificent writers, united by excellence in literature and an inevitable destiny that restricted their art to just a few words. They are also examples of the proximity of Neurology to Art, History, and L...

Evaluating subjective cognitive decline: a systematic review of tools available for evaluating cognitive complaints in Portuguese
Conclusions: In summary, SCD is still underinvestigated in Portuguese-speaking countries. The MAC-Q was the most commonly used tool in Portuguese, despite its lack of formal translation and validation for the Portuguese-speaking population. Further studies are required in order to develop and validate a screening tool that includes questions for detecting SCD-plus features and affective symptoms, so as to improve its predictive value.RESUMO Introdu ção: Declínio cognitivo subjetivo (DCS) é uma percepção não objetivamente mensurada em testes de rastreio.

Acute chorea: case series from the emergency room of a Brazilian tertiary-level center
Conclusion: Acute chorea is an uncommon and challenging problem at the emergency room, often associated with potentially treatable causes. We suggest that use of the acronym DANCE (Diagnosis of chorea, Acute stroke protocol, Normal glucose levels, Check neuroimaging, Exposure to drugs) could form a potential initial approach in the evaluation, in order to emphasize causes that require prompt proper management (e.g. thrombolysis).RESUMO Introdu ção: Coreia é um distúrbio do movimento caracterizado por contrações musculares caóticas, migratórias, aleatórias e involuntárias. Usualmente, define-se como coreia agud...

Who is in charge when I have a headache? Brazilian version of the Headache-Specific Locus of Control Scale
Conclusions: The Brazilian version of the HSLC is a valid and reliable measure of headache-specific LOC beliefs. It is important to consider the balance between the three LOCs for each individual, instead of interpreting them separately.RESUMO Introdu ção: O lócus de controle específico para a dor de cabeça (LOC) refere-se às crenças dos indivíduos acerca de seu controle sobre o início, o curso e as consequências das dores de cabeça. Ob...

Phytohormone abscisic acid boosts pentobarbital-induced sleep through activation of GABA-A, PPARβ and PPARγ receptor signaling
Conclusions: The data showed that ABA boosts pentobarbital-induced sleep and that GABA-A, PPAR β and PPAR γ receptors are, at least in part, involved in ABA signaling.RESUMO Introdu ção: Os distúrbios do sono induzem a ansiedade e esquecimento e mudam hábitos. Objetivo: I...

Predisposing factors and impact of healthcare-associated infections in patients with status epilepticus
Conclusions: HCAIs are a common complication among Ecuadorian patients with SE and were related to a lower survival rate at three months.
