Case report Extrapulmonary tuberculosis following allogeneic stem cell transplantation – a difficult and late diagnosis

We report a case of a 54-year old man after reduced intensity conditioning regimen allogeneic stem cell transplantation, without known personal or family history of tuberculosis, who presented knee joint, skin and bone marrow involvement by a Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. A delay from the onset of the first symptoms to the confirmed diagnosis of tuberculosis was about 2 months in this case. Despite this delay, our patient successfully recovered after 4-tuberculostatics followed by 2-tuberculostatics therapy. (Source: Articles of Archives of Medical Science - TERMEDIA publishing house)

Concurrent radiation and chemotherapy is a standard treatment of patients with cervical cancer in FIGO stages IB2-IVA. Chemotherapy given in the same time as irradiation improved survival significant, but not involves all patients. Cancer recurrence is the most common treatment failure in patients with advanced tumor. Further improvement in the treatment of advanced cases is essential. The increasing knowledge about new biologic markers and better ability to predict risk of cancer recurrence is very important for construction of more effective treatment strategies. Currently, there is considerable interest of role of cyclo...

Early developmental process of mammalian embryo is almost completely directed by the behavior of stem cells, which is controlled by both environmental and intrinsic factors. These cells commonly subject to dividing, migration, deterioration or death. Comparing to all other tissues in the body, central nervous system has a considerably limited capacity to regenerate. Recent knowledge on neural stem cells has brought novel approaches as to the use of stem cells in the treatment of some neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson, Alzheimer disease and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, as well as in the management of spinal co...

Current guidelines encourage ambitious long term cholesterol lowering with statins, in order to decrease cardiovascular disease events. However, by regulating the biosynthesis of cholesterol we potentially change the form and function of every cell membrane from the head to the toe. As research into cell morphology and membrane function realises more dependencies upon cholesterol rich lipid membranes, our clinical understanding of long term inhibition of cholesterol biosynthesis is also changing. This review of non-cardiovascular research concerning such membrane effects raises important new issues concerning the clinical ...

Oral pathogens play a causal role in Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) that is largely driven by inflammation and host immune response. Clinico-epidemiological and animal studies provide a strong link between periodontal disease (PD) and CVD, both of which are highly prevalent, complex disease processes with common risk factors. Genes involved in inflammation, matrix degeneration and immune response have been implicated in the initiation and progression of both diseases. Recent studies have promoted the discovery of novel pathways and lead molecules thus providing opportunities for developing effective vaccine candidates to con...

Occurrence of myocardial infarction and advanced atheromatosis of coronary arteries in premenopausal women is unusual. Surgical revascularization of myocardium as an established method of ischaemic heart disease (IHD) management is more often used in this subset of patients. In recent years there have been some studies indicating better outcome of female patients after cardiac surgery, especially in the long term, but it is generally believed that women are more exposed to complications and have poorer prognosis after myocardial revascularization procedures compared with males, especially in the youngest groups. It seems t...

Hypertension is one of the most common primary diagnoses and a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke and kidney disease. Like many other physiological variables, blood pressure is characterized by long- and short-term variability. Thus, blood pressure measured over extended periods of time, i.e. ambulatory monitoring, is more representative of the actual value than a single office reading. In longitudinal studies, ambulatory blood pressure (ABP) is found to predict future cardiovascular risk better than conventional blood pressure. Not only blood pressure values but also the pattern predicts cardiovascular r...

The phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway has become a subject of great interest of researchers in biomedicine worldwide. Recent studies have shown that PI3K plays a crucial role in various cellular functions: cell cycle progression, cell survival, adhesion and motility, angiogenesis, glucose homeostasis, cell size and organ size control. The phosphoinositide 3-kinase pathway alterations (PIK3CA gene mutations and/or amplification) have been observed in various human tumours. In the majority of diagnosed cases, mutations are localized in one of the three “hot spots” in the gene, responsible for coding cataly...
