Pulmonary artery intramural leiomyosarcoma mimicking pulmonary aneurysm
Chest radiography indicated a well-defined rounded mass at the left lung hilum in a 77-year-old former smoker. Chest computed tomography revealed a longitudinal saccular enlargement of the left pulmonary artery with surrounding soft tissue opacity. Resection of the left lower lobe with segment 1 + 2c was carried out to completely remove the dilated pulmonary artery. The resected specimen revealed obvious dilatation of the interlobar pulmonary artery and its branches. A small yellowish well-demarcated myxoid tumor was contained in this lesion, which was diagnosed as a primary pulmonary artery intramural leiomyosarcoma. (Sou...

Chest wall resection for mesothelioma recurrence after surgery
We report a case of chest wall resection for local recurrence of epithelioid mesothelioma 3 years after cytoreductive surgery. Our patient experienced a 6-month disease-free survival after redo surgery, with complete resolution of his chest pain and discomfort. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Tuberculous constrictive pericarditis and atrial septal defect: Surgical challenge
Tuberculous constrictive pericarditis with atrial septal defect is very rare. A 23-year-old man required pericardiectomy and atrial septal defect closure under cardiopulmonary bypass by cannulating the aorta and right atrium because femoral cannulation was not possible and the venae cavae could not be visualized. He was discharged in a satisfactory condition on the 15th postoperative day, but returned one month later with swelling all over his body and dyspnea on exertion. Echocardiography showed atrial septal defect patch dehiscence and a bidirectional shunt with a collection or mass compressing the right ventricle. Subxi...

Mitral regurgitation following pericardiectomy for constrictive pericarditis
We present the case of a 67-year-old man who developed new moderate to severe mitral regurgitation following phrenic nerve-to-phrenic nerve pericardiectomy for constrictive pericarditis. The severity of the regurgitation was followed up by serial echocardiography which showed improvement 19 days later and complete resolution at 9 months after surgery. Potential mechanisms explaining the evolution of this mitral valve dysfunction in the setting of pericardiectomy are postulated. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Intrapericardial lipoma compressing the right atrium
We report a case of intrapericardial lipoma compressing the right atrium. Cardiac lipomas are very rare benign tumors that may cause life-threatening complications by rapid growth. A 67-year-old woman presented with dyspnea and palpitations on effort due to compression of the right atrium. The tumor was surgically resected. There was no local recurrence after surgery. Thyroid carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation with tracheal invasion
We describe a case of thyroid carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation with tracheal invasion. The malignant tumor was managed by refined spiral tracheoplasty after tangential resection of the trachea. At 8 months after the surgery, computed tomography and bronchoscopy showed no tumor recurrence or tracheal stenosis. (Source: Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals)

Rescue surgery for neonate with huge rhabdomyoma and left outflow obstruction
We describe a rescue operation in a neonate with a large left ventricular tumor obstructing the left ventricular outflow tract. Surgical resection was performed through an aortotomy and transseptal approach. We excised the main part of the tumor, which was obstructing the outflow tract, leaving a portion that was strongly attached to posterior wall of the left ventricle and mitral valve annulus, which was not feasible to remove. Histological examination showed a rhabdomyoma with benign features. The girl was doing well after 3 months, with no residual tumor growth and no signs of obstruction of the left ventricular outflow...

Surgical aspects of pulmonary tuberculosis: an update
Tuberculosis remains a major global medical challenge and concern. In the world’s population of over 7.4 billion people, 8.6 million are estimated to be infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis; another 2.2 billion have latent tuberculosis. There is an annual incidence of 16,000 new cases in the USA and 7–8 million new cases worldwide, of which 440,000 are multidrug-resistant or extensively multidrug-resistant, mainly in developing countries or emerging economies. According to the World Health Organization, the incidence of tuberculosis is 133 cases per 100,000 of the population; 3.3% new cases are drug resista...
