Factors associated with unintended perianesthesia hypothermia
CONCLUSIONS: The novel and noteworthy finding was the association between TIVA and perianesthesia hypothermia. Thoracic, radiologic, and obstetrical procedures were associated with greater rates of and odds for hypothermia. Other identified factors can help to stratify patients for risk for hypothermia.PMID:38628320 | PMC:PMC11018043 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2024.2314443 (Source: Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings)

Leonard Rowntree, Louis Wilson, Fielding Garrison, and the origins of teaching medical history at the Mayo Clinic
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2024 Feb 28;37(3):493-500. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2024.2314448. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTA visiting surgeon described his disappointment with an aspect of the Mayo Clinic in 1914, stating that there was "the almost lack of anything that could be dignified by the term 'lecture.'" One year later, the Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research was founded. By 1917, the foundation declared history of medicine a graduate-level subject, and history of medicine questions were included in final oral examinations. In 1920 and 1921, lectures were given on historical topics; however, these lectures p...

Analysis of atypical glandular cells in ThinPrep Pap smear and follow-up histopathology
CONCLUSION: The AGC diagnostic rate at our institution falls within the range given by the College of American Pathologists. A significant number of cases had follow-up histologic results available, and the overall 5-year insignificant AGC rate was 0.12%.PMID:38628324 | PMC:PMC11018051 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2024.2324656 (Source: Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings)

Uterus transplantation: what the world's religions have to say
This article provides a broad background on the current positions major world religions have taken on UTx (or its components) and the alternative paths to parenthood of gestational surrogacy and adoption. It is intended to help clinicians communicate the information necessary for individuals interested in uterus donation or transplantation to determine-in consultation with their spiritual advisors or religious authorities when needed-how these options align with religious beliefs or teachings.PMID:38628325 | PMC:PMC11018035 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2024.2308475 (Source: Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings)

The one cloud on a sunny day: Using emotional intelligence to manage emotions from negative written feedback
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2024 Mar 4;37(3):501-502. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2024.2315871. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTPhysician trainees receive anonymous written feedback about their clinical performance, which can be challenging to interpret. Negative written feedback can evoke a strong emotional response. An educational gap exists on how to handle receiving negative written feedback and the accompanying emotions. Teaching trainees the tenets of emotional intelligence, including emotional self-awareness and self-management, could be an avenue to improve the experience of receiving feedback. Face-to-face coaching may also hel...

The effect of polycystic ovarian syndrome on fibrocystic breast changes in postmenopausal women
CONCLUSION: Postmenopausal women with PCOS have a higher risk of developing FCCs. Further studies are needed to improve the differentiation of benign FCCs from malignant lesions on imaging for postmenopausal women with PCOS who develop FCCs.PMID:38628327 | PMC:PMC11017995 | DOI:10.1080/08998280.2024.2308458 (Source: Baylor University Medical Center Proceedings)

Sarcoidosis presenting as multiple osseous lesions
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2024 Mar 19;37(3):489-492. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2024.2325322. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTSarcoidosis is a multisystem inflammatory condition presenting with the formation of noncaseating granulomas. These granulomas can be found in nearly every organ of the body, but in 90% of cases the lungs are involved. Osseous manifestations are seen in only 3% to 13% of cases and are typically seen alongside the more common pulmonary manifestations. These lesions can be misdiagnosed as metastatic cancer so biopsy, along with clinical correlation and exclusion of other diseases, is necessary to make the diagno...

The utility of cone-beam computed tomography and multislice computed tomography scan for the evaluation of invasion versus erosion by mandibular squamous cell carcinoma as viewed on medical PACS

Interstitial keratitis presenting as the ocular manifestation of undiagnosed hidradenitis suppurativa
Proc (Bayl Univ Med Cent). 2024 Feb 28;37(3):479-481. doi: 10.1080/08998280.2024.2315540. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTInterstitial keratitis is defined as nonulcerative inflammation of the corneal stroma resulting from a bacterial or viral infection, parasitic antigen, or autoimmune response. Hidradenitis suppurativa is an inflammatory skin condition that presents with painful and inflamed boils in apocrine gland-bearing regions of the body, typically with onset around puberty, and ocular comorbidities exist in only a small percentage of these patients. Herein, we describe a unique ocular presentation of hidradenitis suppurat...
