The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Technology Incubator was formed several decades ago with the intent to develop the region's high technology economy. The program was incredibly successful and soon the Research and Technology Park sprang up around the Baltimore incubator to house the graduating companies. The Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in Chicago was recently awarded $4.5M for refurbishing an existing building in the IIT University Technology Park (UTP) to be used as a business incubator. The September 15, 2009 Daily Herald article explains that the federal funds for the renovation will come from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The University of Central Florida operates the Business Incubator Program that has 8 business incubators including the recently built UCF Sanford Business Incubator which was completed in Sanford this past September. I recently talked with Melinda Richter, executive director of the San Jose BioCenter, and we spoke about bioincubation in California and what the BioCenter is doing to help young companies bring better therapies to market sooner.
The BioCenter has a regular Meet with... series where small early stage companies are matched with larger enterprises to source funding and get insider information on the commercialization process. As a result the Meet with... series has made the BioCenter the largest repository for matching early stage companies and large funding agencies, anywhere.
