A nurse has been sentenced to 9 months' imprisonment at Liverpool Crown Court (15th June, 2009) for obtaining an NHS bursary and then employment in a private nursing home using forged documents, after overstaying his leave to remain in the UK. The conviction follows an investigation by NHS Counter Fraud. Roy Kudzai Mapfumo of Southport, Merseyside, defrauded over £20,000 from the NHS and was sentenced to 9 months' imprisonment on two counts, to run concurrently. A man who used a forged document to obtain an NHS bursary and train as a mental health nurse has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for fraud at Sheffield Crown Court (18 May 2009) after a joint investigation by NHS Counter Fraud and the UK Border Agency. TRAVEL AND CONFERENCE BURSARY
The Travel Awards Scheme was introduced in 2004 to promote scientific communications at major international meetings. Applicants whose work is/has been selected for presentation will be favoured.
Please note the Society meetings are excluded from these awards.
The terms and conditions of the Travel Awards Scheme are as follows:
1. Applicants must be members of the Society in good standing for at least 12 months. Members who are in substantive NHS consultant, academic or similar permanent positions are ineligible for this scheme.

The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland is offering a number of bursaries to undergraduate students of medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry or biomedical science to enable them to work for elective or vacation periods in departments of pathology in universities, medical schools, NHS laboratories or research institutes in the United Kingdom or overseas.
Proposals for work on research projects in any branch of pathology or for the acquisition of experience in diagnostic departments are eligible for consideration. Such work should normally be sponsored by a Member of the Society.

The award will allow a student of a UK university to go on an elective module/travel abroad.Two Brook bursaries are being offered:
Undergraduate students of a UK university going on an elective module abroad related to public health or Epidemiology or;
Postgraduate students or graduates taking a postgraduate degree such as an MSc in Public Health or similar at a UK university who plan to travel abroad on an elective module as part of that degree.
