Dr. Cerullo describes the manner in which stereotactic radiosurgery spares healthy brain tissue while at the same time delivering a lethal dose of radiation to the target. This week Dr. Cerullo continues the series on stereotactic radiosurgery, by specifically discussing the use of stereotactic radiosurgery to treat brain metastases. Brain metastases are not an uncommon complication from patients suffering from breast cancer and lung cancer. The neurosurgeons at CINN have a significant amount of experience treating these patients with Gamma Knife radiosurgery, which offers a relatively non-invasive method of treatment for multiple brain tumors in a single session. As highlighted in a recent New York Times Magazine article, pituitary tumors can be difficult to diagnose due to the vague nature and wide array of symptoms. Their treatment can also present challenges as a result of the distinct differences in the types of pituitary tumors. Size and the secreting or non-secreting nature of the tumor influence the appropriate treatment, either with medicines, surgery and/or radiation therapy or stereotactic radiosurgery. Dr. Gail Rosseau, board-certified neurosurgeon and U.S. Surgeon General candidate, discusses the prevalence and most common symptoms related to pituitary tumors. Vision disturbances and symptoms related to the overproduction of hormones are two of the most serious symptoms which may require a surgical intervention. Surgery for pituitary tumors is performed through the nose using a small endoscope to extract the tumor with no visible incision.
