Medical students ’ perspectives on and understanding of anesthesiology: a Canadian cross-sectional survey
ConclusionsThe results of this national survey study show the benefits of including a mandatory clerkship rotation in anesthesiology, namely on increasing positive perceptions of the specialty, while also revealing avenues for future research and insights on how to further optimize a mandatory anesthesiology rotation in clerkship. Characterizing the impact of thermoregulation in patients after cardiac arrest: a retrospective cohort study
ConclusionIn this single-centre retrospective cohort study, low spontaneous core body temperature was associated with poor outcomes in patients after cardiac arrest. Patients with low spontaneous body temperature also exhibited features suggestive of impaired thermoregulation. Further research is needed to determine whether body temperature upon presentation reflects the robustness of the patient ’s underlying physiology and severity of brain insult after a cardiac arrest. Nonclinical factors affecting intraoperative red blood cell transfusion: a systematic review
ConclusionOur systematic review has synthesized the literature on nonclinical and behavioural factors impacting intraoperative transfusion decision-making, categorized using the TDF. These findings can inform evidence-based interventions to reduce intraoperative RBC transfusion variability.Study registrationOpen Science Framework (https://osf.io/pm8zs/?view_only=166299ed28964804b9360c429b1218c1; first posted, 3 August 2022) (Source: Canadian Journal of Anesthesia)

Comparison of the effects of paratracheal pressure and cricoid pressure on placement of the i-gel ® supraglottic airway: a randomized clinical trial
ConclusionsInsertion of the i-gel supraglottic airway was significantly more successful, easier, and faster while applying paratracheal pressure than cricoid pressure.Study registrationClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05377346); first submitted 11 May 2022. (Source: Canadian Journal of Anesthesia)

Impact of COVID-19-related restricted family presence policies on Canadian pediatric intensive care unit clinicians: a qualitative study
ConclusionPediatric intensive care unit clinicians were impacted by restricted family presence policies during the COVID-19 pandemic. These policies contributed to feelings of disempowerment and challenged clinicians ’ perceived ability to provide the best family-centred care possible. Frontline expertise should be incorporated into the design and implementation of policies to best support family-centred care in any context and minimize risks of moral distress for PICU clinicians. Validation of the postoperative Quality of Recovery-15 questionnaire after emergency surgery and association with quality of life at three months
ConclusionThe QoR-15 score is valid for measuring early postoperative recovery after emergency surgery. The H24 score significantly correlated with both the three-month quality of life and the number of days at home.Study registrationClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04845763); first submitted 11 April 2021. Ambulatory total hip and knee arthroplasty: a literature review and perioperative considerations
ConclusionAnesthesia for TJA has evolved as such that same-day discharge will become the norm for selected patients. It is essential to establish pathways for early discharge to prevent adverse effects and readmission in this population. As more data are generated from an increased volume of ambulatory TJA, more robust evidence will emerge for the ideal anesthetic components to optimize outcomes. A Canadian survey of perceptions and practices related to ordering of blood tests in the intensive care unit
ConclusionMost respondents to this survey perceived that unnecessary blood testing occurs in the ICU. The survey identified possible strategies to decrease the number of blood tests. (Source: Canadian Journal of Anesthesia)

Measurements of pupillary unrest using infrared pupillometry fail to detect changes in pain intensity in patients after surgery: a prospective observational study
ConclusionIn this prospective observational study, pupillometric measurements of pupillary unrest did not identify changes in pain intensity in a postoperative, predominantly opioid-exposed patient population. While the sample size was small, the use of measurements of pupillary unrest to detect and quantify pain has to be questioned. (Source: Canadian Journal of Anesthesia)
