This study aims at quantifying the interaction of cefadroxil with Zn2+, Al3+, Fe3+, Cu2+ and Co2+ ions using the effective electrophoretic mobility as a parameter for calculation of the reaction association constant (K). For this purpose, the electrophoretic mobilities of cefadroxil at different metal ion concentrations in citrate buffer pH 3.6 were determined. A mathematical model to calculate the association constant between cefadroxil and metal ions was used. The results showed that a strong change in the cefadroxil electrophoretic mobility was observed by increasing the metal ion concentrations. The results revealed th...

Enterococcus mundtii ST4SA and Lactobacillus plantarum 423 produce bacteriocins with activity against a number of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Both strains survived intestinal conditions simulated in a gastro-intestinal model (GIM) with infant milk formulations as substrate and prevented the growth of Listeria monocytogenes ScottA. The strains are inhibited by the antibiotics amoxicillin, cefadroxil, roxithromycin and doxycycline, anti-inflammatory medicaments containing meloxicam, ibuprofen and sodium diklofenak, and analgesics containing paracetamol, codeine phosphate and promethazine. Strain 423 is sens...

Two different cefadroxil (CAS 50370-12-2) formulations were evaluated for their relative bioavailability in 24 healthy volunteers who received a single 500 mg oral dose of each preparation. An open, randomized clinical trial designed as a two-period crossover study with a 7-day washout period between doses was employed. Plasma samples for assessments of their cefadroxil concentration by HPLC-UV were obtained over 8 h after administration. Values of 48.94 +/- 10.18 pg x h/ml for test, and 48.51 +/- 9.02 microg x h/ml for the reference preparation AUC(0-t) demonstrate a nearly identical extend of drug absorption. Maximum...

Novel cephalosporins, penicillins, and carbacephems were synthesized by amination of catechols with amino-beta-lactams like cefadroxil, amoxicillin, ampicillin and the structurally related carbacephem loracarbef using laccase from Trametes sp. All isolated monoaminated products inhibited the growth of several Gram positive bacterial strains in the agar diffusion assay, among them methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains and vancomycin-resistant Enterococci. Observed differences in the cytotoxicity and in vivo activity in a "Staphylococcus-infected, immune suppressed mouse" model are discussed.

The human proton/oligopeptide cotransporters hPEPT1 and hPEPT2 have been targeted to enhance the bioavailability of drugs and prodrugs. Previously, we established the mechanisms of drug transport by hPEPT1. Here, we extend these studies to hPEPT2. Major variants hPEPT2*1 and hPEPT2*2 were expressed in Xenopus oocytes, and each was examined using radiotracer uptake and electrophysiological methods. Discussion
PANDAS is an acronym which stands for pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disease associated with streptococcal disease.
It was first described in 1998. The exact pathophysiology is not known but various evidence supports an autoimmune mediated mechanism.
The proposed mechanism is that streptococcal infection produces antibodies that are capable of cross-reacting with specific areas of the brain such as the basal ganglia and then produces behavioral and neuropsychiatric symptoms.
Current treatment is controversial because of lack of research studies. Antibiotic treatment for evidence of current streptococca...

In this paper, a chemiluminescence (CL) micro-flow system combined with on-line solid phase extraction (SPE) is presented for determination of beta-lactam antibiotics (penicillin, cefradine, cefadroxil, cefalexin) in milk. It is based on the enhancement effect of beta-lactam antibiotics on the luminol-K(3)Fe(CN)(6) CL system. The micro-flow system was fabricated from two polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) plates (50mmx40mmx5mm) with the microchannels of 200mum wide and 150mum deep. C(18)-modified silica gel was packed into the microchannel (length: 10mm; width: 1mm; depth: 500mum) to serve as SPE device. Extraction and pre...

Multi-objective optimization of an industrial penicillin V bioreactor train using non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm

Bulk of the penicillin produced is used as raw material for semi-synthetic penicillin (such as amoxicillin and ampicillin) and semi-synthetic cephalosporins (such as cephalexin and cefadroxil). In the present paper, an industrial penicillin V bioreactor train is optimized for multiple objectives simultaneously. An industrial train, comprising a bank of identical bioreactors, is run semi-continuously in a synchronous fashion. The fermentation taking place in a bioreactor is modelled using a morphologically structured mechanism. For multi-objective optimization for two and three objectives, the elitist Non-dominated Sorting ...

The variation in antibiotic use in Europe is most extreme for this class of antibiotics, suggesting that in many countries in Europe these antibiotics are prescribed inappropriately. A sequential injection analysis (SIA) spectrophotometric procedure for cefadroxil determination has been developed. The SIA instrumentation was modified to achieve the desired function and operations by using the software developed to interface the PC with the conventional SIA system. The method is based on the measurement of a red, water-soluble product formed by the reaction between cefadroxil and 4-aminoantipyrine in the presence of alkaline potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) at 510 nm. Optimum conditions for determining the drug were investigated. Beer's law was obeyed over the concentration ranges of 1 - 10 mg L(-1) ...
