The synthesis of a bridged thiolactam is described. This thiolactam is shown to undergo an unusual C-N bond cleavage reaction under conditions of its synthesis. Spectroscopic properties of the thiolactam indicate a considerable degree of twist of the thioamide bond.

A coumarin-based derivative (1), a highly selective and sensitive turn-on fluorogenic probe for the detection of HSO(4)(-) ions in aqueous solution, has been designed and synthesized. Various spectroscopic and DFT calculations revealed that H-bonding between the phenolic -OH and imine nitrogen of 1 played a crucial role in its high selectivity for HSO(4)(-).

A novel ligand, 5,5'-(2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-diyl)-bis(thiophene-2-carboxylic acid) (BTC), and its Ru(II) complex (BTC-1) in which the anchoring group is attached to the thiophene units were developed. Using a low-volatility electrolyte and 3.3 mum mesoporous TiO(2) films BTC-1 achieved a solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency of 6.1%, compared to 4.8% for N719 under the same experimental conditions.

We employed a urease-catalyzed reaction to gradually remove a high concentration of a chaotropic agent (urea) from a denatured protein solution and demonstrated that efficient protein refolding can be achieved by the urease-catalyzed reaction, without large-volume dilution.

Prussian blue nanoparticles (PB NPs), stabilized for the first time by the pi-conjugated polymer poly(4-(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-2yl-methoxy-1-butanesulfonic acid, potassium salt) (PEDOT-S), demonstrated a novel multiple-color pH-sensing function with a redox reaction based on the electronic interaction between the PB nano-core and the PEDOT-S shell.

C,C-Diacetylenic phosphaalkenes have been obtained from a 1-chloro-3-ethynyl-1,2-allene which becomes accessible from a silica-promoted rearrangement of a 3-chloropenta-1,4-diyne; oxidative acetylene homo-coupling of the phosphadiethynyl-ethene is described for the first time and affords a dimeric, cross-conjugated product which features a largely decreased HOMO-LUMO gap compared to all-carbon-based reference compounds.

Solvothermal reaction of La(2)O(3), Sn and Se in dien yields a novel lanthanide selenidostannate [{La(dien)(2)}(4)(mu(4)-Sn(2)Se(9))(mu-Sn(2)Se(6))](infinity), the first example of the coordination of Sn(2)Se(9) and Sn(2)Se(6) ligands to hard Lewis acidic lanthanide metals, while the reaction in en yields an ionic compound [La(2)(en)(8)(mu-Se(2))]Sn(2)Se(6) containing a ten-coordinated binuclear lanthanum complex [La(2)(en)(8)(Se(2))](4+) with the diselenide Se(2)(2-) group as a bridging ligand.

Reaction of an ethylenediamine solution of the intermetallic Zintl phase K(4)Pb(9) with dimesitylcadmium yielded the dimeric Zintl ion [Pb(9)Cd-CdPb(9)](6-) in low crystalline yield. The cluster anion exhibits a Cd-Cd bond and was structurally characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction in [K(2,2,2-crypt)](6)[Cd(2)Pb(18)].2en (1). DFT was also used to explore the bonding in the hexa-anionic cluster.

A novel tandem protocol involving a Heck reaction process for the synthesis of alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes has been developed. In the presence of Pd(OAc), PPh(3), NaOAc, TBAB and air, N-allylbenzenamines underwent the reaction with various aryl halides to afford the corresponding alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes selectively in moderate to good yields. The protocol can also be used as a valuable route for the deallylation of arylamines.
