Chiral anion-mediated asymmetric ion pairing chemistry.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Chemical reactions and processes often involve cationic reagents, intermediates or products in prochiral or chiral racemic form. To afford instead non-racemic compounds, an asymmetric ion pairing of the cations with chiral anionic counterions can be considered. This review presents recent examples of the synthesis and use of chiral anions for such stereoselective purposes. PMID: 19920995 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Chemical Communications)

Cinchona-based phase-transfer catalysts for asymmetric synthesis.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Phase-transfer catalysis is one of the most useful methodologies for practical syntheses given its operational simplicity and mild reaction conditions that enable its application in industrial processes. Cinchona alkaloids have been a popular, natural source of practical organocatalysts due largely to their excellent commercial availability and low cost. Since the first Cinchona alkaloid-derived phase-transfer catalysts was disclosed in 1981, diverse generations of Cinchona-derived phase-transfer catalysts have been developed and successfully applied to various asymmetric syntheses. In this feature article, we describe...

[Pb(9)CdCdPb(9)](6-): A Zintl cluster anion with an unsupported cadmium-cadmium bond.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Reaction of an ethylenediamine solution of the intermetallic Zintl phase K(4)Pb(9) with dimesitylcadmium yielded the dimeric Zintl ion [Pb(9)Cd-CdPb(9)](6-) in low crystalline yield. The cluster anion exhibits a Cd-Cd bond and was structurally characterised by single crystal X-ray diffraction in [K(2,2,2-crypt)](6)[Cd(2)Pb(18)].2en (1). DFT was also used to explore the bonding in the hexa-anionic cluster. PMID: 19921036 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Chemical Communications)

Palladium-catalyzed oxidative tandem reaction of allylamines with aryl halides leading to alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
A novel tandem protocol involving a Heck reaction process for the synthesis of alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes has been developed. In the presence of Pd(OAc), PPh(3), NaOAc, TBAB and air, N-allylbenzenamines underwent the reaction with various aryl halides to afford the corresponding alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes selectively in moderate to good yields. The protocol can also be used as a valuable route for the deallylation of arylamines. PMID: 19921041 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Chemical Communications)
