Abstract A case of an isolated astragalo-scaphoid dislocation following a fall from a motorbike is reported. Due to the diagnostic
obscurity of the full extent of the injury, computed tomography (CT) with 3D reconstruction was utilized to precisely visualize
the articular condition and revealed the presence of small intra-articular bone fragments and calcaneo-cuboid subluxation.
Furthermore, the detailed imaging offered valuable information for preoperative planning. Patient has healed without sequelae.
In light of the good outcome in this case, we suggest utilizing CT with 3D reconstruction when there is a ...

We report a case of acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) after cefotaxime use confirmed by a positive patch test. A 30-year-old woman received cefotaxime, fosfomycin and ciprofloxacin for sinusitis. Twelve days after drug initiation, she developed an extending pustular erythema associated with fever. Laboratory investigations showed marked leukocytosis. His blood chemistry was normal. The histological examination showed parakeratosis, spongiosis and nonfollicular intra-epidermal pustules consistent with AGEP. All medications were withdrawn. The symptoms resolved within 11 days after cefotaxime discontinuation....

In conclusion, high-level ciprofloxacin resistance in Salmonella Enteritidis is associated with fitness costs. In the absence of antibiotic selection pressure isolates may acquire mutations enabling reversion to an intermediate-level ciprofloxacin resistance phenotype associated with less significant fitness costs.

The phenomenon of antibiotic resistance has created a need for the development of novel antibiotic classes with nonclassical cellular targets. Unfortunately, target-based drug discovery against proteins considered essential for in vitro bacterial viability has yielded few new therapeutic classes of antibiotics. Targeting the large proportion of genes considered nonessential that have yet to be explored by high-throughput screening, for example, RecA, can complement these efforts. Recent evidence suggests that RecA-controlled processes are responsible for tolerance to antibiotic chemotherapy and are involved in pathways tha...

The patient was immunocompetent and did not have preceding gastroenteritis or any local structural abnormality. Malnutrition and old age might have been the predisposing factors. The patient received intravenous ceftriaxone for 2 weeks followed by oral ciprofloxacin. Pleurocentesis ...

Abstract: The Meropenem Yearly Susceptibility Test Information Collection (MYSTIC) Program was a global, longitudinal antimicrobial resistance surveillance network of more than 100 medical centers worldwide monitoring the susceptibility of meropenem and selected other broad-spectrum comparator agents. In 1999, and from 2000 through 2008, a total of 10 or 15 United States (USA) medical centers each forwarded 200 nonduplicate clinical isolates from serious infections to a central processing laboratory. Over the 10-year period of this surveillance program, the activity of meropenem and an average of 11 other antimicrobial age...

Triclosan is a biocide whose wide use has raised a debate about the potential benefits vs. hazards of the incorporation of antimicrobials in consumer products. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether exposure of biofilms of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium to triclosan influences the tolerance of the bacteria towards antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and vice versa. A synergistic antibiofilm activity was observed when the biofilms were treated with triclosan before or together with ciprofloxacin, and an additive activity was observed with planktonic cells. For example 500 [mu]g mL[minus]1 triclosan...

Conclusions
This in vitro study suggests that 6-mercaptopurine may be synergistic with macrolides and rifamycin derivatives against MAP. The activity of clarithromycin against MAP seems to be enhanced by rifampicin. (Source: Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy)

Conclusions
The mechanism of resistance to linezolid, in this resistant strain, may be related to a decrease in the antimicrobial uptake. This new mechanism of resistance was also related to a little loss of fitness. (Source: Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy)

In conclusion, piperacillin/tazobactam remained a very active β-lactam when tested in vitro against clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa found in the SENTRY Program (1997–2007). Trends toward slightly decreased susceptibility were noted in all regions over the last decade (except LA); only polymyxins had susceptibility rates at >90%. Resistance surveillance programs should be sustained to document emerging resistance patterns of old and newer agents for difficult-to-treat pathogens such as P. aeruginosa. According to research reported at the American College of Emergency Physicians annual meeting, emergency department physicians rarely adjust the doses of antibiotics for obese patients.
Researchers analysed the rate at which the physicians at an emergency department in the US adhered to dose adjustment guidelines for selected antibiotics established by the university's antibiotic utilisation review (AUR) committee. Over a 3-month period, just over one thousand patients weighing >100kg or with a BMI >40 kg/m2 were prescribed cefazolin (293 doses), cefepime...

This multicentre, double-blind study was undertaken to demonstrate non-inferiority of once-daily oral moxifloxacin compared with combination therapy in the management of acute, uncomplicated pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Women aged ≥18 years with PID were randomized to receive moxifloxacin (400 mg once daily) for 14 days or comparator treatment (doxycycline [100 mg twice daily] plus metronidazole [400 mg three times daily] for 14 days, plus one single 500-mg ciprofloxacin dose). Of the 434 valid per protocol (PP) patients, the overall clinical success rates at 2–14 days post-therapy were 96.6% (moxifloxacin) ...

This study investigates the link between adaptation to biocides and antibiotics in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. An enrichment continuous culture of P. aeruginosa NCIMB 10421 (MIC: 25 mg BKC l-1) was operated (D = 0.04 h-1, 792 h) with added benzalkonium chloride (BKC). A derivative, PA-29, (696 h), demonstrated a >12-fold decrease in sensitivity to the biocide (MIC: > 350 mg BKC l-1). The variant demonstrated a 256-fold increase in resistance to ciprofloxacin, with a mutation in the gyrA gene (Thr-83-->Ile). Similarly, culturing of the original strain in a continuous culture system with ciprofloxacin selection pressure...
