Abstract There is no data concerning the use of the intraseptal anaesthesia (ISA) for single tooth extraction. The aims of this study
were to compare the clinical efficacy and haemodynamic responses of the ISA with the periodontal ligament anaesthesia (PLA)
for single tooth extraction. Thirty-five randomly selected healthy patients (ASA I) undergoing maxillary lateral incisors
extraction entered the study. Onset of anaesthesia, the width of the anaesthetic field and duration of anaesthesia were recorded
by pinprick testing. Intensity of anaesthesia was evaluated on a visual analogue scale. Haemodynamic param...

Abstract A reference-based radiographic “reference sphere method” (RSM) for accurate length measurements in (dental) projection radiographs
for the assessment of tooth length in dry human mandible sections is evaluated. RSM determines the depth coordinates of reference
spheres placed in the object plane from the elliptical distortion of their shadows. Two segments (one canine and one molar)
of dry human mandibles were exposed 95 times at different angulations (0–40°) on a dental charge-coupled device receptor.
Three steel spheres (diameters d

Abstract The 3D architecture of the mandible contributes to the functional and morphological characteristics of the lower one third
of craniofacial region. The mandible has six distinct functional units, and its architecture is the sum of balanced growth
of each functional unit and surrounding matrix. A dentofacial deformity (DFD) with malocclusion can be interpreted as their
unbalanced growth. In order to characterize the mandibular 3D architecture, we analyzed the 3D reconstructed computed tomography
(CT) images in terms of functional units. We evaluated both sides of 30 datasets of 3D CT scans of normal c...

In conclusion, (1) NF1 per se does not predispose to caries; and (2) even if NF1 had an adverse effect on dental health, poor
outcome can be counteracted with good personal dental care supported by well organized primary health care. The results of
the present study are important to report since a common anecdotal perception is that the rate of caries may be higher in
NF1 compared to reference population.

Abstract The aim of this study was to correlate clinical and computerized tomography (CT) features of bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis
of the jaws (BRONJ). All ONJ patients for whom there was complete CT scan imaging were eligible. Selected clinical parameters
retrieved from their medical records were analyzed for correlation with CT parameters. The clinical presentation of BRONJ
was supported by findings in CT imaging in 78.3%. The lesion’s size on CT correlated with the presence of purulent secretion
(p = 0.03). When sequestrum was present, the median lesion’s size on CT was relatively big (28&...

This study deals with the determination of the retentive force between primary and secondary telescopic crowns under clinical
conditions. Forty-three combined fixed–removable prostheses with a total of 140 double crowns were used for retention force
measurement of the telescopic crowns prior to cementation. The crowns had a preparation of 1–2°. A specifically designed measuring
device was used. The retentive forces were measured with and without lubrication by a saliva substitute. The measured values
were analyzed according to the type of tooth (incisors, canines, premolars, and molars). Additionally, a comparison...

Abstract Bisphosphonates (BP) are used in the treatment of malignant osteolytic processes and postmenopausal osteoporosis. There have
been a number of incidents in patients treated with BP. The incidents are described as an osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ).
The main medications associated with these reports are zoledronic acid (ZOL) and pamidronate (PAM). The clinical presentations
describe a deterioration of the jaw bones and surrounding tissues. The purpose of this study was to investigate expression
of collagen types I, II, III, and V in human gingival fibroblasts, osteoblasts, and osteosarcoma cells (SaOS-...

This study aims to identify distinctive dentofacial characteristics of hypodontia patients. For this purpose, 189 young hypodontia
patients (cases) were divided into subgroups, based on criteria from literature. Normalised differences between cases and
controls were calculated for various parameters of dentofacial form. Subsequently, cluster analysis was applied to disclose
subsets of hypodontia patients with distinctive dentofacial features. The ANB angle, interincisal angle and lower anterior
face height were consistently significantly different amongst the subsets. Four clusters of patients with an increasing number...

The objectives of the study were (1) to describe the 1996-year baseline
caries status of male Danish conscripts and (2) to assess their early proximal lesions 6-year behaviour. In 1996, all 20-year-old
conscripts at Central Barrack Birkerød (n = 115) went through an oral examination, including visual surface-level fillings’ recording and a radiographic examination
with bitewing radiographs that assessed the proximal-surface caries and restoration patterns. After 6 years, the behaviour
of proximal lesions was studied in 73 of these subjects, and oral health habits were assessed through a questionnaire. Mean

Abstract In vitro plaque removal studies require biofilm models that resemble in vivo dental plaque. Here, we compare contact and non-contact
removal of single and dual-species biofilms as well as of biofilms grown from human whole saliva in vitro using different
biofilm models. Bacteria were adhered to a salivary pellicle for 2 h or grown after adhesion for 16 h, after which, their
removal was evaluated. In a contact mode, no differences were observed between the manual, rotating, or sonic brushing; and
removal was on average 39%, 84%, and 95% for Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus oralis, and Ac...

Abstract Logicon Caries Detector™ (LDDC) is the only commercially available computer-assisted diagnostic system for caries diagnosis.
The object of this study is to elucidate the efficacy of LDDC when used by inexperienced dentists. Fifty extracted teeth were
imaged using an RVG6000. Seven dentists who had just passed the Japanese National Dental Board Examination observed those
images without LDDC (woLDDC) and assessed the probability that caries lesions were present, then re-assessed the same teeth
using LDDC (wLDDC). The areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves (Az) were compared. No sta...

The objective of this study was to determine the apoptotic pathway activated
by H2S in HGFs. The HGFs were exposed to 50 ng/mL H2S, resulting in 18 ng/mL in the culture medium, which is lower than the concentration in periodontal pockets. The number of
apoptotic cells after 24 and 48 h incubation was significantly higher than that in the control cultures (p < 0.05). Mitochondrial membrane depolarization and the release of cytochrome c, and caspase-3, and caspase-9 were also significantly increased after both 24- and 48-h incubation (p < 0.05), whereas caspase-8, a key enzyme in the receptor l...
