In response to the growing gap between discovery and the optimal application of medical advancements to health care delivery, countries the world over have developed large and well funded programs to reduce these gaps. Although these programs vary in nature, they have generally largely focused more on reducing the gap in bench to bedside research. Canada's strong biomedical and patient oriented research (POR) community has a strong base from which to build, but requires support in order to fill the missing elements needed to take full advantage of the important unmet needs in health related research. In Canada, a coali...

CONCLUSION: Adiponectin levels were higher in type 1 diabetes. CONCLUSION: The time to remission in Graves patients treated with propylthiouracil can be predicted using age, serum free thyroxine and superior thyroid artery flow rate. This may help early consideration of alternative treatment for the patients requiring prolonged treatment for remission or for those who fail medical treatment. This would decrease unnecessary, long-term propylthiouracil exposure with its serious side effects.

CONCLUSIONS: This historical study contextualized Canada's "waiting-list problems" with evidence on breast cancer care, where lower income Americans seemed to have waited as long as similar Canadians. Many more low-income Americans seemed to experience the longest wait of all for adjuvant care. They simply did not receive it. In contrast to stark American socioeconomic inequity, this study evidenced remarkable equity in Canadian breast cancer care.

CONCLUSIONS: The study showed the extent of oxidative protein damage (OPD) in this model of estrogen deficiency. The protective effect of estrogens against tissue specific OPD suggests that estrogens play an important role within the antioxidant defense systems in plasma, liver and brain. The exact molecular mechanisms leading to these findings are not yet completely known. Meanwhile, hormone replacement therapy for the prevention of OPD in a tissue specific manner may be required.

CONCLUSIONS: Keloid scarring is a clinical clue to excess atherosclerosis not explained by traditional risk factors. Conclusion: L-carnitine has a greater maximum plasma concentration than ALC and PLC. L-carnitine also has a longer half-life than ALC and PLC. These data may have important implications in the designing of dosing regimens for L-carnitine or its analogues, such as ALC or PLC.

Conclusion: Muscle K+ content is not decreased by the K+ deficient diet and K+ loss is not increased by the higher muscle K+ content in the body. Rather it is caused by the inability of the body to use K+ during HK and K+ supplementation.

Conclusion: Widespread population screening may contribute to the prevention of congenital infections due to TORCH agents. Because of the high seropositivity of T. gondii, rubella and CMV in pregnant women, preventive measures should be taken.

Conclusions: We documented the presence of MRSA strain colonizing children attending DCCs in Mexico, mainly in the south and north regions of the country. Clone A and B which are closely related represented 45 % of the total of MRSA isolates. We found both, SCCmec type II and type IV strains in the three regions.
