Community Dent Oral Epidemiol 2009. © 2009 John Wiley & Sons A/SAbstract [ndash] Global self-ratings of oral health (GSROH) have been used in population surveys to assess oral health status. The aim of this study was to assess various candidate predictors for each response level (very poor, poor, fair, and good/very good) of GSROH among Korean elders. Data from a national representative sample of Korean adults aged 65 years and over was analyzed. The mean age of the 1173 subjects was 72.7 years and 60.2% were women. Aft...

Conclusions: The study shows that the family and home environment should play a central role in the promotion of oral health, through mealtime routines, incorporating a fair parenting style and developing open and positive family relationships. Socioeconomic factors in adolescents' oral health: are they mediated by oral hygiene behaviors or preventive interventions?email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions: There is an SES gradient in caries experience in adolescents in Pennsylvania. Disparities in caries experience, however, cannot be accounted for by SES-associated differences in brushing, flossing, sealant use, fluoride exposure, or recency of use of dental services. To facilitate the design of preventive interventions, future research should determine the pathways through which SES-associated disparities occur. (Source: Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology)

School-level contextual factors associated with betel quid chewing among schoolchildren in Taiwan.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSIONS: The new findings from this study suggest that the specific school attended is an important point of intervention. Therefore, effective policies and preventive programs should be strongly considered for implementation in schools that are putting students at the greatest risk for betel quid chewing behavior. Our study also confirmed the relationship between betel quid chewing, cigarette smoking, and alcohol drinking, suggesting that multifaceted intervention strategies need to be considered in regard to such behaviors among elementary schoolchildren. Is there equity in oral healthcare utilization: experience after achieving Universal Coverage.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
CONCLUSION: Notwithstanding the UC policy implementation made impressive strides toward improving of welfare coverage and an increase in accessibility of health services among Thais, inequality and inequity in oral healthcare utilization persist even when the country achieved universal coverage. Decomposition analyses demonstrate the association of each determinant to inequality in utilization which provides information for policy amendment to achieve the goal of equity in healthcare system. Impact of oral disease on quality of life in the US and Australian populations.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions: There was acceptable construct validity and adequacy of the NHANES-OHIP questionnaire. In the United States, the impact of oral disease disproportionately affected disadvantaged groups, a finding that supports application of the US Healthy People 2010 major goals of improved quality of life and reduced health disparities. Comparison of the discriminative ability of the generic and condition-specific forms of the Child-OIDP index: a study on children with different types of normative dental treatment needs.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions: CS-Child-OIDP was better able to discriminate between groups with and without each of the four types of normative dental treatment need. The better performance of CS-Child-OIDP compared with the generic Child-OIDP was independent of the indicator used to assess discriminative ability (i.e. differences between groups, effect sizes or adjusted ORs). Conclusion: The hypothesized factor structure with the four health domains of the short forms of CPQ(11-14) has been confirmed by CFA. The results in the current study indicated that the items used in the short forms contain sufficient information in measuring OHRQoL for children in Hong Kong. Is dental care utilization associated with oral cavity cancer in a large sample of community-based United States residents?email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions: Among US adults residing in community settings, use of dental care during the past 12 months was marginally statistically significantly associated with oral cavity cancer, but clinically relevant in assessing oral cavity cancer prevalence in this sample. However, because of the nature of our data, which restricts temporal sequence, a large sample prospective study that may identify modifiable factors associated with oral cavity cancer development, namely poor dental care is needed.
