A whole-child perspective assessment guide for early years settings.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
This paper describes the development of a national assessment guide to assist the Irish Pre-School Inspectorate in evaluating support for child development in early childhood care and education settings. The development arose as a direct result of changes to the regulations governing pre-school childcare provision in Ireland. Revised regulations, published in 2006, built on previous regulations and made explicit the whole-child perspective within them. This places an important and overt focus on support for children's development within the inspection process, and is based on a socio-ecological understanding of childre...

Young, vulnerable and pregnant: family support in practice.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Intervention in the early years, including family support, can reduce inequality and disadvantage across the life course. This paper reports on an evaluation of a local project, which aims to increase resilience and avert crisis among vulnerable young mothers. It suggests that paraprofessional link workers, spanning the antenatal-postnatal period, may contribute to maternal health and wellbeing and increase use of support services and networks. However, challenges for inter-agency and interprofessional working remain. PMID: 19899505 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Community Practitioner)

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition characterised by a persistent pattern of inattention or hyperactivity. The condition impacts on multiple aspects of an individual's life, as it can affect motor skills, social relationships, self-esteem and educational success. The diagnosis and management of this condition is of concern to healthcare professionals and is a topic often debated by the media. The most recent National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidance on diagnosing and managing ADHD in children, young people and adults has triggered a resurgence of this debate. The N...

In most infants, GOR is a normal occurrence that is self-limiting and they will outgrow it. However, in those who experience more severe symptoms, a combination of medical and dietetic management under the care of a multidisciplinary team is important. Where feeding problems exist, input should include behavioural and psychological support. PMID: 19899508 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Community Practitioner)

While some girls cope well as teenage mothers and often have a range of support services, young fathers do not often access services in their own right. This paper reviews literature about services for young men from the time they become sexually active. Through the use of a case study, it then asks questions about the type and nature of services required by young fathers. Health and social care practitioners may identify critical points in the life of a young father and offer appropriate services and 'joined-up' intervention, thereby facilitating long- and short-term involvement in the life of the child. Long-acting reversible contraception: reducing unintended pregnancies.email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
This paper gives a brief history of the development of contraception and looks at the methods available in the U.K., with particular emphasis on National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidance about long-acting reversible contraception--injections, implants and intrauterine methods. These methods have the potential to reduce unintended pregnancies, but at present remain underused. Providing positive messages about their ease of use and reversibility, and describing them as 'lasting' rather than 'long-acting' may increase their acceptability. The side effects of cancer treatment include fever, infection, gastrointestinal upset, altered body image and psychological impact on children, young people and their families. Debate continues as to how children, young people, their siblings and parents cope with childhood cancer and its treatment due to its impact ...

This is the second paper in a series of three, drawing on the experience of providing evidence to the Health Select Committee's 2008 inquiry into health inequalities. Material submitted has been adapted and expanded according to three common and often controversial questions. One member of the committee enquired about the relevance of education and training to recruitment issues in health visiting, asking why it is necessary to be a nurse and what would be the barriers to changing this arrangement, which has been in force since the 1960s.This paper summarises some of the longstanding discussions about this issue, which...

Between February and July 2006, Milton Keynes health visitors piloted the Parents' Evaluation of Developmental Status (PEDS), inviting every two-year-old (n=100) living in the Sure Start Local Programme area for a review of their health and development. PEDS is a validated tool that assists in the identification and prediction of developmental, behavioural and social or emotional issues in children from birth to eight years. This tool was also highlighted by 'Health for all children' as one for possible use. The pilot showed evidence that it was beneficial in identifying current developmental, behavioural and social or...

Questions asked by managers, commissioners and policy makers to find out what is, or should be, happening within health visiting services can seem immensely helpful in focusing the mind or clarifying key points. Alternatively, they may feel hostile and accusative, if their starting assumptions are alien to the everyday experience of health visitors. This paper is the first in a short series of three that draw on the experience of providing evidence to the Health Select Committee's 2008 inquiry into health inequalities. A formal process of seeking written evidence was followed up with specific questions in oral session,...

Authors: Early Support is the England-wide government programme to achieve child-centred and family-focused services for children aged nought to five years with a disability or complex need and their families. Integral to the ethos of Early Support is the understanding that every decision should be influenced and led by children and families. Families are expected to play a strategic role in the development and monitoring of policy and practice, and the service is expected to be proactive in seeking their views. Section 242(1B) of the NHS Act 2006 now places a duty to involve service users in planning the provision of...

This study investigates the perceptions and training needs of health visitors, school nurses, nursery nurses and practice nurses in relation to alcohol misuse primary prevention and the delivery of brief interventions in their day-to-day work. The findings indicate a variation in the need for training, which is reflected by the level of knowledge, skills and confidence of the different professional groups. This may help to facilitate the provision of needs-led alcohol training, and promote the effective delivery of support and brief interventions to individuals, families, schools and communities.
