In this study, we evaluated propolis as an anti-resorptive agent. Calcitriol-stimulated mouse marrow cultures, which contain both osteoclasts and osteoblasts, were exposed to the ethanol extracts of propolis or vehicle control and stained for tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)-activity to identify osteoclasts. A significant, dose-dependent reduction in multinuclear TRAP+ cells was demonstrated, although the propolis treatment accommodated cell growth and survival (P < 0.05). Propolis also reduced the formation of actin rings in pure cultures of RAW 264.7 osteoclast-like cells, suggesting that it exerts direct actio...

Abstract [ndash] In cases of an immediate insertion and loading of implants after a traumatic loss of the patient's own dentition or due to an inevitable extraction of an anterior tooth, it is essential to provide the patient with an adequate provisional crown. A soft-tissue recession must be avoided, whether it is due to a compression of the peri-implant soft-tissue caused by an over-dimensioned restoration in the cervical collar of the provisional crown or to a too small dimensioned sulcus former. A simulation of the exact dimension of the lost tooth [ndash] especially on the cervical part of the new provisional restorat...

All organisms respond to stress by inducing the synthesis of a group of proteins known generically as heat shock proteins. The activation of these proteins is an essential cellular mechanism designed to protect against a variety of environmental stresses. It is probable that the production of these proteins is increased in the cells of the traumatized dental pulp, however, this has not as yet been demonstrated. The degree of heat shock proteins expression may be related to the severity of the trauma such that estim...

Premature loss of permanent upper right central and upper left central teeth because of the mobility and arrest in root development were treated using patient's own natural crowns on a removable appliance. This treatment option could be considered as an esthetic and functional temporary management of permanent central incisors loss until the definit...

Abstract [ndash] The aim of this study was to investigate if obesity is associated to the occurrence of dental trauma in the permanent anterior teeth of adolescents from Recife, Brazil. It included a random sample of 1046 boys and girls aged 12 years attending both public and private schools. The sample size was calculated using a 95% confidence interval level; a statistical significance of 5%; and an odds ratio of 1.55. The sample selection was carried out in two stages: first, schools were selected by simple sampling, and then children were chosen using a proportionality coefficient. Data were collected through clinical ...

Intracanal bisphosphonate does not inhibit replacement resorption associated with delayed replantation of monkey incisorsemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
This study evaluated the effectiveness of a bisphosphonate (etidronate disodium) as an intracanal medicament in the root canals of avulsed monkey teeth, placed before replantation after 1 h of extraoral dry storage. Incisors of six Macaca fascicularis monkeys were extracted and stored dry for 1 h. Teeth were then replanted after canal contamination with dental plaque (negative control) or after root canal debridement and placement of etidronate sealed in the canal space. A positive control of calcium hydroxide placed 8[ndash]9 days after replantation was also included. All monkeys were sacrificed 8 weeks later and block se...

Abstract [ndash] Dental trauma, particularly tooth avulsion, is a frequent cause of tooth loss in children, adolescents, and young adults. The avulsed tooth should be immediately reimplanted in its alveolus. This procedure can be performed by anyone at the accident site and not only by dental surgeons. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the knowledge of sixth graders of the city of Araçatuba, SP, about dental avulsion and tooth reimplantation through a structured and standardized survey. Our sample consisted of 778 students. The data collected was processed using the program epiinfo 2000. Most students we...

Elastic modulus of posts and the risk of root fractureemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
The objective was to evaluate, using finite element analysis, the maximum principal stress ([sigma]max) on the root, using posts with different elastic modulus submitted to different loading directions. Nine 3D models were built, representing the dentin root, gutta-percha, a conical post and the cortical bone. The softwares used were: MSC.PATRAN2005r2 (preprocessing) and MSC.Marc2005r2 (processing). Load of 100 N was applied, varying the directions (0°, 45° and 90°) in relation to the post's long axis. The magnitude and direction of the [sigma]max were recorded. At the 45° and 90° loading, the highest values of [sigma...

Abstract [ndash] Sublingual traumatic ulceration is rare and a benign, ulcerative and granulomatous process that occurs as a result of repetitive trauma of the oral mucosal surfaces by the teeth. Treatment should begin conservatively and should focus on eliminating the source of the trauma. In our cases, we chose the conservative treatment by grinding the teeth and placing composite resin over the offending teeth and applied orabase. At the follow-up, we confirmed that the lesion was resolved and infant was feeding normally. (Source: Dental Traumatology)

Root fractures are defined as those that involve cement, dentin and pulp, comprising from 0.5 to 7% of injuries in permanent dentition. Diagnosis is made through clinical and radiographic exams, the latter frequently being limited by the position of the fracture. Treatment varies according to the displacement and vitality of the fragments. The authors present a clinical case of recurrent trauma of tooth 21 causing a horizontal root fracture in the middle third. After several attempts at endodontic treatment, the option was to remove the apical fragment by surgery. The postoperative period of 4 years shows very satisfac...
