To determine the efficacy and safety of the 585-nm pulsed dye laser (PDL) in the treatment of recalcitrant warts in children. Retrospective survey of the medical records of children with recalcitrant warts who were treated with PDL between March 1995 through January 1999 at the Children's Memorial Hospital outpatient subspecialty center, Chicago, Illinois. Sixty-one children with recalcitrant warts were treated with PDL; 75% of them had total clearance of warts after an average of 3.1 treatment sessions. Overall success rates were 100% for both perineal and perianal and face-only warts, 93% for hands, 69% for plantar warts...

Nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) constitutes the most common malignancy in Caucasians. Epidemiological data derive, mainly, from studies in the United States, Australia, and Northern Europe, whereas data from Mediterranean Europe are scarce. To provide information on the epidemiology of surgically treated NMSC of the head and neck in the region of Thrace, Northern Greece, and to evaluate the surgical treatment given. A retrospective review of patients surgically treated from 2004 to 2006 was conducted. Data on demographics, histology and skin cancer characteristics, and treatment efficacy and recurrence rate were extracted a...

Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment is effective for acne in Caucasians, but no significant improvements have been observed in studies on Asian skin. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of IPL on acne vulgaris in Asian skin. Twenty-five Japanese patients, mainly of skin phototypes III or IV and moderate to severe acne, were treated five times with IPL at wavelengths of 400 to 700 nm and 870 to 1,200 nm. Results were evaluated in terms of changes in numbers of noninflammatory comedones and inflammatory papules, pustules, and cysts and acne grade before and after treatment. After the first exposure, numbers of noninflammato...

Treatment of ingrown toenails using chemical matricectomy in patients with diabetes has been difficult, because delayed wound healing, wound infections, and digital ischemia can interfere with the procedure. Investigation of the effectiveness and safety of chemical matricectomy with 10% sodium hydroxide solution for ingrown toenails in patients with diabetes. Squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) produce significant morbidity in solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs), particularly in patients who develop multiple tumors. Topical photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been shown to decrease the number of keratotic lesions in SOTRs, but the duration of the beneficial effect is limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential benefit of cyclic PDT in the prevention of new SCCs in SOTRs. Twelve high-risk SOTRs received cyclic PDT treatments at 4- to 8-week intervals for 2 years. The development of new SCCs (invasive and in situ) performed 12 and 24 months after the start of cyclic...

In this study, 43 flaps and 24 grafts were evaluated using a modified Hollander Wound Evaluation Scale and a visual analogue scale. The mean visual analogue scale score was significantly better for flap repairs than for graft repairs. In addition, 100% of flaps had an acceptable overall cosmetic appearance on the basis of the Hollander Wound Evaluation Scale, compared with only 75% of skin grafts. For defects on the nose where flap and graft repair may both be technically possible, a flap may be more likely to result in superior cosmetic outcome. Sixty great toes, including normal (n=20), ingrown (n=20), and pincer nails (n=20), were assessed with respect to body height, body weight, body mass index, nail height, nail width index, and nail height index. Nail angle and height of osteophyte were measured. Despite the presence or absence of overcurvature, the circumferential length displayed nearly iden...

A retrospective cohort study was conducted of patients with CSCC with PNI. Dermatopathologists blinded to subject outcomes determined the diameter of the largest involved nerve. Data were obtainable for 48 patients. Small-caliber nerve invasion (SCNI) of nerves less than 0.1 mm in diameter wa...

Complete resolution was observed in 38 lesions (95%). No complications after treatment were noted. One case developed a small scar. Multiwavelentgh laser (595 nm; 1,064 nm) provides a safe, fast, and effective option in the treatment of VLs. The authors have indicated no significant interest with commercial supporters. ...
