Occupational therapists' assessment and reporting of functional cognition in stroke care
CONCLUSION: Occupational therapists in Ireland reported a multi-component assessment process to evaluate functional cognition post-stroke. Establishing practice guidelines for the assessment of functional cognition may be of benefit to occupational therapists working in stroke care. Further research is needed to quantify procedures in this assessment process to account for variation in practice.PMID:38299538 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024.2310760 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

Barriers and facilitators to access post-stroke rehabilitation services in the first six months of recovery in Brazil
CONCLUSION: Access to post-stroke rehabilitation services presented more facilitators than barriers. Public policies to subsidize health costs, optimize waiting time, and process for scheduling post-stroke rehabilitation services should be considered to reduce barriers. Likewise, human and financial resources must promote the facilitators.PMID:38299553 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024.2310756 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

Investigating employers' attitudes and knowledge about employing someone with a spinal cord injury
CONCLUSIONS: Organisational policies and practices of the employers' organisations, and workplace culture impact the likelihood of someone with a SCI being employed, particularly in relation to recruitment, employment targets, and available accommodations. Individual staff attitudes and knowledge also influence this process. Multi-faceted approaches are needed to increase the employment of people with SCI.PMID:38299569 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024.2310176 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

Does the level of mobility on ICU discharge impact post-ICU outcomes? A retrospective analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The ability to step transfer to a chair (MMS ≥5) before ICU discharge was independently associated with discharge to usual residence and hospital LOS, irrespective of preadmission morbidity. Increasing the level of patient mobility at ICU discharge should be a key focus of rehabilitation interventions.PMID:38293804 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024.2310186 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

Patients' and therapists' perspective of integrating home and family work roles into rehabilitation following distal radius fracture
CONCLUSIONS: Patients have predetermined rehabilitation expectations primarily focused on mobility and strengthening exercises. Therapists and patients agree that adapting home and family work roles is beneficial but was not a major focus for either therapists' or patients' expectations during therapy. An unfavourable environment, patient budget constraints, and limited time were identified as challenges to integrating family roles.PMID:38284803 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024.2305297 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

Facilitating virtual social connections for youth with disabilities: lessons for post-COVID-19 programming
DISCUSSION: For youth with disabilities who have been historically marginalized in social spheres, the newly ubiquitous infrastructure regarding virtual programming must be supported and enhanced. A hybrid approach involving virtual/in-person options in future programming is recommended.PMID:38279660 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2023.2301484 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

Comparisons between group- and individual-based interventions to support recovery from stroke and ischaemic heart disease in the community: a scoping review
CONCLUSIONS: There is limited evidence comparing interventions delivered in a group and individual modality for adults living with stroke or IHD. Adequately powered studies are needed to determine if mode of delivery is equivalent or more cost effective.PMID:38279793 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024.2305300 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

Perceptions of individuals with Parkinson's disease about a telerehabilitation protocol performed during the COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative study
CONCLUSION: Apprehension and fear were present during the implementation of the protocol, however, previous experience with face-to-face physical therapy and the team allowed feelings of happiness, contentment, welcomeness, and satisfaction with the possibility of resuming the activities. The individuals actively participated in the program with commitment and co-responsibility, but the lack of physical contact, limited equipment, and constant concern for the safety and individuality of the participants must be emphasized.PMID:38264886 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024.2305687 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

Defining dignity at the intersection of disability: a scoping review
CONCLUSIONS: The absence of inclusive research methods hinders the development of a comprehensive definition of dignity that is accepted by and relevant to people with disability. Engaging with both theoretical and empirical perspectives of dignity is crucial to develop a meaningful and inclusive definition, which can inform interventions and policies that enhance dignity for people with disability across diverse settings and contexts.PMID:38265032 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024.2302582 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)
