Professor Heike Mertsching and her team of researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology (IGB), Germany, have succesfully seeded human liver cells to a piece of pig intestine to use as a 3D model in the early stages of drug development.
To build up test systems, a dedicated, PC-controlled bioreactor was developed in which the re-seeded matrix is perfused with fresh medium via the arterial inflow and the spent medium and degradation products are transported away via the venous reflux.
The reseeding of the vascularized matrix with adult stem cells and endothelial progenitor cells r...

Nanotechnology developed a special microfluidic chip for monitoring
the effect of medication on cancer cells. The new technique can already be applied in a clinical setting. At
present, the process is monitored using an optical microscope, for
high-throughput screening, electronics can be added to the chip. Using
multiple chambers for cell culture, fast comparison will be possible.

Refinement for the use of liver grafting in the most severe cases has also over the last decade been improved. Furthermore many new designs of liver support ...

An ideal extracorporeal liver support system has to provide the main functions of the liver: detoxification, synthesis and regulation. But do we need such an ideal in all clinical situations and can we afford it? The critical issue of the clinical syndrome in liver failure is the accumulation of toxins not cleared by the failing liver. This understanding led to the development of cell-free artificial liver support systems.
This special issue of Therapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis is dedicated to cell-free artificial liver support, intended to give engineering scientists, inventors and clinical investigators an update and a...

In conclusion, a significant decline in the serum level of water-soluble and protein-bound toxins was achieved with both devices. PROM produces higher blood clearances for most toxins, which results in higher delivered treatment doses compared with a matching treatment with MARS.
A Modeling Study of Bilirubin Kinetics During Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System Sessions (Artif Organs. 2006 Apr;30(4):285-300)
E. Magosso et al. present a quantitative description, by means of a mathematical model, of bilirubin removal during Molecular Adsorbent Recirculating System sessions. The model includes four compartments: two for ...

The MIT Technology Review has an article about ongoing progress at the Mayo Clinic to develop a liver support device based on clusters of porcine hepatocytes. The Mayo machine is loaded with 200 grams of freshly isolated pig hepatocytes, which is about 20% of liver mass of normal human liver. The research is being conducted by a group of associates led by Scott L. Nyberg M.D., Ph.D..

Arbios Systems, Inc., a biomedical device and cell therapy company developing proprietary liver assist products for the treatment of liver failure, announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has allowed the expansion of the number of clinical sites and increased the allowable number of patients in its IDE feasibility clinical trial for its SEPET™ liver assist device. Under the revised protocol, Arbios can include up to four clinical trial sites and to up to 20 liver failure patients with encephalopathy. The trial was previously limited to two sites and 15 patients. The company further announced that the Uni...

J.F. Patzer 2nd et al. discuss "Slow continuous ultrafiltration with bound solute dialysis." (ASAIO J. 2006 Jan-Feb;52(1):47-58). Bound solute dialysis (BSD), often referred to as "albumin dialysis" (practiced clinically as the molecular adsorbents recirculating system, MARS, or single-pass albumin dialysis, SPAD) or "sorbent dialysis" (practiced clinically as the charcoal-based Biologic-DT), is based upon the thermodynamic principle that the driving force for solute mass transfer across a dialysis membrane is the difference in free solute concentration across the membrane. The clinically relevant practice of slow continuo...

MDCalc is quick access to all those medical calculations that are too painful to memorize, and too useful to ignore. After wasting time hunting through Google results to find the equations I needed, I created this site as a respository.
This handy site was created by a third-year medical student who got tired of having to wade through Google searches to find an easy to use, quick calculator for his medical equations using multiple resources and references, including Medcalc, Pocket Medicine, 2nd Edition, and eMedicine.

In conclusion, HT using SHs showed hepatic repopulation similar to that using FHs. This suggests that both SHs and FHs can repopulate the liver as if they were hepatic stem cells. In addition, HT using SHs supported liver functions such as albumin correction at the same level as that using FHs. These observations strongly support the idea that SHs could be an alternative to primary FHs as a novel cell source for future HT.
