Conclusions: Caution should be used in applying the SBE to the noninvasive assessment of AC severity. Significant segmental stenosis is associated with significant underestimation of the actual pressure gradient because of viscous losses. A substantial overestimation of the actual pressure drop due to a pressure recovery effect may occur in mild AC, especially when the distal aorta is not dilated. Conclusions: The relative volumetric contribution of each myocardial segment to global left ventricular systolic function at rest and stress is not uniform. Conclusions: Amateur competitive cycling leads to considerable LV structural and functional changes. The increases in LV wall thickness and cavity size together with supranormal diastolic properties are key characteristics of this LV remodeling. As well, LV mass, diastolic function, and RV size are predictors of exercise capacity, indicating an important involvement of these elements in improving cardiac function with endurance training. Background: Quantitative analysis of left-ventricular (LV) aneurysms after myocardial infarction is prognostically relevant and assists in planning surgery. Three-dimensional (3D) echocardiography facilitates clear visualization of cardiac anatomy and accurate assessment of functional parameters. The aim of the present study was to determine the ability of 3D echocardiography to quantify LV aneurysms. Methods: Ten patients with a known LV-aneurysm after myocardial infarction underwent 3D echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging at 1.5 Tesla within 3 days. For 3D echocardiography, a multiplanar transeso...

Conclusion: In patients with severe systolic dysfunction, 3DE shows poor agreement for measurement of LVEF as compared to RNA. There may be underestimation of up to 20% in absolute terms by 3DE. Accordingly, the two methods are not interchangeable for the follow-up of LV function. A limitation of 3DE may, at least in part, be related to the incomplete incorporation of the apical region into the pyramidal image sector in patients with dilated hearts. Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) is a rare congenital defect that presents even less frequently in adults. Here we described a 40-year-old patient presenting with palpitations. Electrocardiography revealed frequent ventricular ectopy. Echocardiography revealed a dilated left ventricle and an abnormal flow pattern in the pulmonary artery and at the right side of the interventricular septum. Coronary angiography demonstrated an enlarged right coronary artery (RCA) with collateralization to the left coronary artery (LCA) and reflux of contrast into the pulmonary artery. Computed ...

Twelve elderly competitive distance runners (ER) underwent oxygen consumption and echo/Doppler treadmill stress testing (Balke protocol) for up to 10 years. Twelve age-matched sedentary controls (SC) with no history of CV disease were similarly tested and the results compared for the initial three series of the study. CV data clearly separated the ER from SC. At entry, resting and maximal heart rate, systolic/diastolic blood pres...

Coronary vascular responses to the cold pressor test (CPT) have been shown to parallel changes caused by infusion of acetylcholine. Whereas the CPT is a method of assessing endothelial-dependent vasodilation, nitroglycerin produces endothelial-independent vasodilation. We performed histological studies on autopsy specimens of abdominal aorta and demonstrated that it is predominantly muscular artery. To test the hypothesis that vasodilatory responses of the abdominal aorta to interventions would parallel those of peripheral vessels, 33 normal males without hypertension, diabetes, or hyperlipidemia, and 10 younger male smoke...

Conclusion: Aortic strain and distensibility were lower in patients with OSAS than in control patients, and CPAP treatment provided improvement in aortic elastic parameters. (ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY, Volume **, ************) (Source: Echocardiography)

Conclusions: Tissue velocities decreased from base to apex. Mean difference between the raters was[minus]0.02 cm/sec at rest and 0.45 cm/sec during exercise. Peak-to-peak variability was lowest in the mitral ring during rest (10[ndash]14%) and increased at peak exercise (15[ndash]21%). The proportion of segments eligible for analysis was 84% in the septum and 67% in the anterior wall during exercise. Thus, in patients with normal coronary arteries, tissue Doppler velocities decrease from base toward the apex during bicycle exercise. Interrater agreement is reduced during exercise and beat-to-beat variability is lowest in t...

Conclusion: Both carotid and aortic mechanical functions are more deteriorated in ischemic compared with nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy. Different functional and structural mechanisms might be responsible for the deterioration of arterial elastic properties in each category. Conclusions: Therefore, we concluded that left atrial dilation and corresponding mitral annular dilation may cause MR in lone AF patients without LV dysfunction and/or dilatation. (ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY, Volume **, ************) (Source: Echocardiography)

Conclusion: In long-term responders to CRT, there is alteration in the function of remodeled LV with acute interruption of CRT, without significant worsening of LV dyssynchrony. The role of different echocardiographic parameters in the assessment of LV dyssynchrony remains controversial. Even after long-term CRT reversely remodels the LV, the therapy needs to be continued uninterrupted for sustained benefits. (ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY, Volume **, ************) (Source: Echocardiography)

The effect of dobutamine on carotid and brachial arteries compliance and the association of L-arginine as a potential nitric oxide pathway restorer were evaluated in patients with heart failure. Twenty-seven outpatients participated. Drugs used for the treatment of heart failure were withheld at least 24 hours before the study. The carotid and brachial artery diameters and hemodynamic variables were evaluated by ultrasonography and Doppler in baseline conditions, with dobutamine, with flow-mediated dilatation (FMD), and with placebo or L-arginine alone and associated with dobutamine. There was a significant increase in car...
