[The C-peptide as a risk factor of development of type 1 diabetes in the first degree relatives of the autoimmunological diabetic patients.]email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions: The increase of fasting level of C-peptide can indicate compensatory increase of beta cell secretion. It can indirectly prove the presence of insulin resistance in this group of people. The presence of higher level of C-peptide and positive IAA titre with no clinical symptoms of type 1 diabetes, seems to be the prognostic factor to retard of clinical symptoms of diabetes. Conclusions: 1. In the entire study group (n = 268) we found a positive correlation between the number of CAG repeats and the severity of psychological manifestations. We also found that in men with a higher number of CAG repeats (> 23 repeats) the somatic and psychological manifestations associated with signs of androgen deficiency are more common during the ageing period and that these patients score higher on the overall Heinemann scale. 2. We found no correlation between the number of CAG repeats in men divided into 4 subgroups with respect to their scores (hence the severity) on the overall Heinemann scale and its ...

Growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) are often used by athletes as doping agents. It is estimated that up to 25% of sportsmen using anabolic-androgenic steroids also take GH. Available data do not confirm the influence of GH or IGF-1 preparations on physical performance improvement. However, there is some evidences for many adverse effects in athletes using this form of doping. Blood tests to detect growth hormone abuse are available since several years. Surprisingly, no one has been proven to use illegal doping agents influencing GH/IGF-1 axis. PMID: 19885810 [PubMed - as supplied by publis...

We present two cases of severe hepatotoxicity caused by antithyroid drugs in women with Graves disease. The first medication in both cases was methimazole replaced by propylhiouracil due to intolerance. The main symptom was jaundice lasting about 2 months. As a first step in the treatment we terminated the antithyroid drug administration and introduced prednisone and ursodesoksycholic acid therapy. The termination of thyrotoxicosis by means of 131 I administration had also positive influence on the course of disease. In summary we emphasise the significance of prompt discontinuation of antithyroid drug once toxic symptoms ...

Chromogranin A is a main, nonspecific neuroendocrine tumor marker (NET). It's estimation was applied for diagnostic purposes and for monitoring the treatment of NET. Currently few commercial assays are available allowing measurement of CgA concentration in serum or plasma. These methods have various sensitivity and specificity and differ in many analitycal parameters. Numerous factors and pathologies may influence the outcome of the CgA measurement. Therefore, a review article on this matter may be useful for clinical and laboratory practice. PMID: 19885814 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Endokrynologia Polska)

Pregnancy dramatically affects the function of the adrenal glands and is associated with altered levels of adrenal hormones. Endocrine adaptation to pregnancy involves changes in the activities of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal and renin-angiotensin-aldosterone axes. As a result, pregnancy may influence the course of pre-existing adrenal diseases or lead to their unmasking. Although disorders of the adrenal glands are rare during pregnancy, they may pose a serious health problem. The fact that some symptoms of adrenal disorders may be erroneously interpreted as symptoms of normal pregnancy together with overlapping...

Bone remodeling is essential for skeletal and the whole body health. Imbalance in skeletal turnover, so that bone resorption exceeds bone formation, may lead to reduction in bone strength and increase fractures risk. The main target of anticatabolic therapy is to normalize increased osteoclasts activity and bone turnover. Molecular mechanisms of action of this class of drugs are related with different points in cellular signaling pathways that control osteoclasts differentiation and resorbing activity. These mechanisms are briefly described in our review. PMID: 19396757 [PubMed - in process] (Source: Endokrynologia Polska)

[Relationship between toxic effects of potassium bromate and endocrine glands.]email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Potassium bromate (KBrO(3)) is a compound belonging to Group 2B of carcinogens (a possible human carcinogen). This agent was used as a food additive in flour treatment, as a component of cold-wave hair lotions, and is still used in barley processing. Additionally, KBrO(3) is formed as an oxyhalide by-product during water ozonation. KBrO(3) induces oxidative stress and may contribute to neoplasia in endocrine glands. It has been demonstrated that KBrO(3) triggers thyroid follicular cell tumors in rats. It has been revealed in our in vivo and in vitro studies that KBrO(3) significantly increases lipid peroxidation in rat...

[Inhibitory effect of carbamazepine on hypotensive action of spironolactone in primary aldosteronism.]email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
We report the case of a 68-year-old female with primary aldosteronism treated with spironolactone. The patient occasionally suffered from trigeminal neuralgia and was then prescribed with carbamazepine, which although alleviated pain worsened the control of blood pressure. To maintain blood pressure within normal limits the doses of spironolactone had to be increased. Replacement of carbamazepine with gabapentin prevented these drug-induced increases in blood pressure in our patient. This case shows for the first time the existence of a drug interaction between spironolactone and any anti-epileptic drug in primary aldoster...

Glucuronidation is one of the most important metabolic processes which eliminates androgens from the human organism. Three enzymes (UDP-glucuronosyltransferases) are responsible for transfering the glucuronic group from glucuronic acid to androgens: UGT2B7, UGT2B15 and UGT2B17. Glucuronide products are more polar, water soluble, less toxic and easily extracted form the body. Testosterone is a common androgen abused in sport. The norm for urinary testosterone/epitestosterone ratio is below 4.0. Large testosterone excretion is associated with a deletion polymorphism of the UGT2B17 gene. This polymorphism decreases T/E ra...

Conclusions: Adrenal gland injury is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. With modern imaging modalities capable of reliably detecting adrenal injury, the presence of AGI should be considered a marker of overall injury severity. Conclusions: The high rate of detected SFL in obese children in this study suggests that Iranian obese children are at risk of metabolic syndrome. Moreover, the WHO indicated Iran as one of the countries with high rate of obese children. Based on this information, we can conclude that the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its related non-communicable diseases will be increasing future in . Therefore, it is necessary to develop some plan to control overweight problem including teaching healthy lifestyle in schools and kindergartens as well as mass media. Conclusions: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus among acromegalics is much higher than in the general population. The occurrence of glucose tolerance impairments does not depend on the duration of the disease. In patients with acromegaly insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia are positively correlated with the level of activity of the disease. The goal of diabetes mellitus treatment is to maintain long-term near-normoglycaemia to prevent the onset or progression of long-term complications. In order to achieve tight glycaemic control and improve the quality of life for diabetic patients, a number of novel insulin preparations, insulin analogues, have been constructed thanks to recombinant DNA technologies and advanced protein chemistry. Because structurally modified insulins may differ from human insulin not only in metabolic but also in mitogenic potencies there were concerns raised about the possibility of increased insulin analogue proliferative action or ...

Conclusions: The main conclusion is that a single dose of (131)I has no significant influence on salivary gland function; a repeated high-doses therapy is connected with an essential risk of side-effect occurrence. Scintigraphy can evaluate salivary gland function with high sensitivity. Parotid glands are more radiosensitive than submandibular. (Pol J Endocrinol 2008; 59 (5): 403-410). The research carried out in Poland reflected that sexual initiation before 18 years of age is a common phenomenon and refers to roughly 80% of teenagers. In Poland there is no uniform standing of medical and legal environments with regard to dealing with a juvenile patient who has become sexually active and expects the advice of a gynaecologist, gynaecologic examination and often asks for prescribing contraceptives. The procedures must take into account the fact that in Poland, until 18 years of age, a juvenile functions under the parental or tutelary authority, while a consent for medical service requires beside of th...

Hormones have an influence on many tissues and organs, including the cardio-vascular system (CVS). Depending on their activity on CVS, they can be divided into 4 groups: having hypertensive or hypotensive influence and chronotropic positive or negative action. Endocrine regulation in CVS may occur in many ways. Apart from hormones usually connected with CVS regulation, other more recently, discovered ones can act on it. A few of these act directly through specific receptors in heart or vessel wall cells, whereas some act indirectly - stimulating other neuroendocrine factors. Additionally, novel mechanisms of signal tra...
