Abstract  Survival trends in survival for laryngeal cancer in Europe are varied. Five-year survival varied around 60–64% but numbers below 50% have been commonly reported. The aim of this study was to assess the factors influencing survival in patients with laryngeal cancer in our region. A total of 128 male and 5 female patients with larynx cancer (91 glottic and 42 supraglottic) were treated at Patras University Hospital between March 1992 and August 2004. Except 3, all were smokers and 56 (41%) heavy alcohol users. Postsurgical staging showed that most had been classified at stages III (38%) and IV (49%)...

Abstract  The aim of this study is to investigate the clinical and pathological characteristics of basal cell adenoma (BCA) and to compare the diagnosis/treatment of BCA with those of Warthin’s tumor (WT) and pleomorphic adenoma (PA). Among 192 patients with benign tumors of the parotid gland who underwent surgery, 9 had BCA. All of these tumors showed a benign pattern on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The accuracy of fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) for diagnosis of BCA was slightly lower than for PA and WT. Most PA and BCA lesions developed in the upper part of the parotid gland. ...

Abstract  Any endoscopic diagnostic procedure that is capable of giving exact information on laryngeal lesions without damaging the tissue has essential advantages over standard biopsy. Tissue autofluorescence is defined as a natural ability of tissue to fluoresce when exposed to a certain light wavelength. This feature is a consequence of the presence of fluorophores in the tissues, which are activated by a narrow wavelength range. However, due to their biochemical and biophysical characteristics, laryngeal precancerosis and cancer do not fluoresce when exposed to blue light. In the present study, we used Pe...

In conclusion, we consider that steroid myopathy or mucosal inflammatory theory alone is not sufficient to explain the etiopathogenesis of dysphonia in asthmatic patients taking ICS. The laryngeal mucosal changes were detected by laryngeal videostroboscopic examination in some asthmatic patients, with dysphonia using ICS, and/or laryngeal myopathy was found by laryngeal EMG in some of them in this study. Thus, various factors may have role simultaneously in the occurrence of dysphonia. Abstract  Many cases of tympanosclerotic stapes fixation are accompanied by fixation or erosion of malleus and/or incus. This status of the ossicular chain is one of the reasons that ossiculoplasty for tympanosclerotic stapes fixation is more difficult than that for otosclerosis. We conducted a retrospective review of seven patients who were operated on for tympanosclerotic stapes fixation between 2002 and 2006. All of the patients had abnormal conditions of the malleus and/or incus and underwent stapedectomy and total ossiculoplasty with hydroxyapatite prosthesis (Apaceram T-7 type), which has a planar-like ...

Although some reports have also noted the presence of satellite tumors associated with PA recurrence, only few reports have focused on this issue. We paid special attention to the satellite lesions apart from the main tumors and discussed their frequency, origin, nature and the ways of treating them. A total of 108 specimens of primary parotid gland PA resected at the Okayama Saiseikai General Hospital from 1988 to 2008 were microscopically reviewed. Four (3.7%)...

Abstract  Metallic foreign bodies are rarely found in the maxillary sinus, and usually they have a dental origin. Potential complications related to foreign bodies include recurrent sinusitis, rhinolith formation, cutaneous fistula, chemical poisoning, facial neuralgic pain and even malignancies. Two main surgical approaches are currently used for the removal of foreign bodies in the maxillary sinus: the bone flap and the endoscopic sinus techniques. We are reporting two unusual cases of large high-velocity foreign bodies removed by a modified maxillary lateral antrotomy, with free bone flap repositioning and...

We examined four cadaver larynx and one patient larynx. In the five larynges, all relevant structures and landmarks could be 3D visualised. Superimposing of two HRCT scans shows that when the arytenoids move from ‘respiration’ to ‘phonation’, they perform a rotating, translating and tilting motion. Moreover, we could demonstrate that the vocal fold elongates by 7% with cricothyroid approximation. We conclude that MIMCS® is well suited for 3D imaging of the larynx, analysis of laryngeal biomechanics and pre-operative planning of LFS procedures. Abstract  Narrow band imaging (NBI) is an optical technique in which a filtered light reveals superficial carcinomas in view of their neoangiogenic pattern. The accuracy of NBI is implemented by combining it with a high definition television (HDTV) camera. The aim of this study was to prospectively evaluate the diagnostic gain of NBI and HDTV in the assessment of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Between April 2007 and December 2008, we analyzed by NBI with or without HDTV 279 patients divided in two groups: Group A included 96 patients affected by LSCC and Group B included 183 subjects under follow-u...

Abstract  Nasal packing may influence the mucociliary clearance of the nose in the postoperative healing phase. In an attempt to overcome some of this problem, a haemostatic septal suturing technique was conceived. In this prospective study, we aimed to investigate the effects of nasal packing and septal suturing technique on mucociliary clearance by rhinoscintigraphy. Forty-eight adult patients who had undergone septoplasty were included in the investigation. Preoperatively, the patients were allocated into three groups: group 1, fingerstall packs filled with gauze and smeared with vaseline were used (11 mal...

Abstract  Endoscopic resection of laryngeal tumors is replacing external approaches. One drawback of endoscopic resection is the difficulty of interpretation of histological specimens because of thermal effect of laser on tissues. Our goal is to assess the reliability of frozen section in this setting by comparing its results with those of routine histology. We, retrospectively, reviewed the charts of all consecutive patients, who underwent cordectomies in our institution between January 2000 and 2008, using the CO2 laser Acublade system (Lumenis, Santa Clara, CA). Age, sex, staging of the tumor, previous tre...

Abstract  The widespread availability of novel primary treatment approaches against oropharyngeal cancers has provided several potentially curative surgical and nonsurgical treatment options for patients, generating both hope and controversy. As treatment is usually curative in intent, management considerations must include consideration of primary tumor and nodal disease control as well as long-term toxicities and functional outcomes. Anatomical and functional organ preservation (speech and deglutition) remains of paramount importance to patients with oropharyngeal cancer and the physicians involved in their...
