Home orthostatic training in chronic fatigue syndrome – a randomized, placebo-controlled feasibility studyemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions A placebo-controlled study of HOT in CFS is feasible. HOT is well tolerated and generally complied with. A likely physiological rationale for HOT in CFS is related to reductions in orthostatic intolerance. An adequately powered study including strategies to enhance compliance is warranted. 15-Lipoxygenase-2 is expressed in macrophages in human carotid plaques and regulated by hypoxia-inducible factor-1αemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions These results demonstrate that 15-LOX-2 is highly expressed in human plaques and is correlated with the presence of macrophages and HIF-1[alpha]. 15-LOX-2 enzyme activity can be modulated by HIF-1[alpha]. Thus, increased expression of 15-LOX-2 in macrophages in hypoxic atherosclerotic plaque may enhance inflammation and the recruitment of inflammatory cells. Cardiovascular risk factors and collateral artery formationemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Eur J Clin Invest 2009 Arterial lumen narrowing and vascular occlusion is the actual cause of morbidity and mortality in atherosclerotic disease. Collateral artery formation (arteriogenesis) refers to an active remodelling of non-functional vascular anastomoses to functional collateral arteries, capable to bypass the site of obstruction and preserve the tissue that is jeopardized by ischaemia. Hemodynamic forces such as shear stress and wall stress play a pivotal role in collateral artery formation, accompanied by the expression of various cytokines and invasion of circulating leucocytes. Arteriogenesis hence represents an...

Activated complement is more extensively present in diseased aortic valves than naturally occurring complement inhibitors: a sign of ongoing inflammationemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions Our study indicates that anti-complement mediators (C1-inh and clusterin) are deposited in diseased aortic valves together with activated complement, indicating an existing counter response against complement locally in the valve. However, deposition of activated complement is significantly more widespread than that of its inhibitors, which could explain ongoing inflammation in those diseased aortic valves. Eur J Clin Invest 2009Background Advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs), particularly carboxymethyl(lysine)-adducts (CML), exert part of their cellular effects by binding to a receptor, named receptor for AGEs (RAGE). The soluble form of this receptor (sRAGE) has been shown to have an athero-protective role. We hypothesized the existence of a relationship between the AGE[ndash]RAGE axis and the occurrence of symptoms related to carotid atherosclerosis in nondiabetic conditions.Materials and methods We evaluated plasma levels of CML and sRAGE (by ELISA), and tissue levels (tAGEs and tRAGE, semiquantitatively, by immunohistoc...

CDKs as therapeutic targets for the human genetic disease tuberous sclerosis?email this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Eur J Clin Invest 2009 The tuberous sclerosis gene 2 product tuberin is an important regulator of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). In addition, tuberin is known to bind to the cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitor p27Kip1 (p27) and to regulate its stability and localization via mTOR-independent mechanisms. Recently, evidence has been provided that tuberin also affects p27 localization via regulating mTOR's potential to activate the serum- and glucocorticoid-inducible kinase (SGK1) to phosphorylate p27. Taken together, these findings strengthen the argument that besides mTOR-inhibitors, such as rapamycin analogue...

Eur J Clin Invest 2009 Surgical treatment of abdominal wall hernia has been based for many decades on observational evidence, as the disease physiopathology was ambiguous. The long-standing hypothesis of abnormal collagen metabolism as a causative factor of hernia disease seems to become substantiated by modern investigations, demonstrating a link between abnormal matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) expression and abdominal wall hernia. Current evidence suggests a strong correlation between MMP-2 and direct inguinal hernia, while the role of this MMP in indirect, incisional and recurrent hernias has not been completely elucidat...

Post-prandial lipaemia has emerged as a key contributor to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk and progression. Specifically, delayed clearance of chylomicrons (CM) and their remnants increase the delivery of triglyceride and cholesteryl ester to the vessel wall and can accelerate the progression of atherosclerosis, which may be particularly pertinent to individuals with insulin resistance and/or obesity. As the number of studies linking post-prandial metabolism and chronic disease increases, interest has grown in the use of parameters reflecting CM metabolism as a possible indicator of early CVD risk. This, in turn has rais...

Fenofibrate attenuates endothelial monocyte adhesion in chronic heart failure: an in vitro studyemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions The fenofibrate directly inhibits monocyte binding by TNF-[alpha]-activated HAECs, probably through preventing up-regulation of cell adhesion molecules by endothelial cells in response to inflammatory stimuli. This PPAR[alpha] activator may have the potential to ameliorate vascular inflammation in patients with CHF. (Source: European Journal of Clinical Investigation)

Effects of AT1- and β-adrenergic receptor antagonists on TGF-β1-induced fibrosis in transgenic miceemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusion The AT1-antagonist TEL reduced myocardial hypertrophy and interstitial fibrosis in TGF-[beta]1-TG mice by normalizing MMP/TIMP ratio. [beta]1-Adrenergic inhibition by MET as well as TGF-[beta]1 antagonism induced antihypertrophic rather than antifibrotic effects. Inhibition of both renin-angiotensin system and [beta]1-adrenergic system may exert different but synergistic effects to reduce myocardial remodelling. Quercetin inhibits fatty acid and triacylglycerol synthesis in rat-liver cellsemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Conclusions In hepatocytes from normal rats, the quercetin-induced decrease in both de novo fatty acid and TAG synthesis, with a consequent reduction in VLDL-TAG formation, may represent a potential mechanism contributing to the reported hypotriacylglycerolemic effect of quercetin.
