The virtual learning environment (VLE) was formally introduced into the orthodontic postgraduate teaching programme at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute in October 2006 with the main role to support the existing didactic teaching. The aim of this study was to establish the programme co-ordinator, lecturer and postgraduate perspective on the introduction of the VLE as an adjunct to other teaching methods. All participants were interviewed utilising open-ended questions to ascertain their response. The interviews were semi-structured and were continued until no new information was elicited. The interviews suggested that the p...

Problem-based learning (PBL) in medical and dental curricula is now well established, as such courses are seen to equip students with valuable transferable skills (e.g. problem-solving or team-working abilities), in addition to knowledge acquisition. However, it is often assumed that students improve in such skills without actually providing direct opportunity for practice, and without giving students feedback on their performance. 'The Manchester Dental Programme' (TMDP) was developed at The University of Manchester, UK as a 5-year, integrated enquiry-led curriculum. The existing PBL course was redesigned to include a uni...

Conclusions: From this study it would appear that the attitude of recently graduated dentists in Belgium towards the institutionalised elderly is rather negative and their knowledge of ageing is poor. The actual level of geriatric dentistry education in the undergraduate curriculum did not appear to influence this attitude, but Belgian dental schools are challenged to reorientate their provision of geriatric dentistry education to include activities that help to develop positive perceptions towards the elderly, with an empathic positive and caring attitude. Like many other UK Dental Schools, Leeds Dental Institute has undertaken a commitment to integrated learning within its new curriculum. This leads to the conclusion that formative assessments have to be designed with as much care and attention as summative assessments. (Source: European Journal of Dental Education)

Assessment of knowledge and competencies related to implant dentistry in undergraduate and postgraduate university educationemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Learning in academic settings is strongly related to the way the students are tested or examined. Assessment therefore must be integrated in the curriculum design, coordinated and should reflect the learning outcomes of the education. Assessment within the field of implant dentistry must fulfil four major objectives: complete and direct the learning process with feedback (formative), ensure that students are adequately prepared (summative), assess attitudes and skills such as critical thinking, reflection and self-assessment ability, and supply continuous feedback to teachers on curricular content and impact. The use of dental implants has become a widely accepted and well-documented treatment option offering to both patients and dentists an alternative to traditional treatment modalities and at the same time opening a brand new area in dental postgraduate education. As such, it is necessary to define the competencies that the graduate student/dentist will need at the different levels of clinical practice in Implant Dentistry and the educational pathways that are required to convey those competencies in a structured manner. Modern dental education should have in on one hand the necessary education and training to make modern dentists capable of implementing population and individual preventive strategies, and on the other make them competent to satisfy current public demands to most patients. Amongst the restorative procedures most demanded by patients implant therapy has reached a clear pre-dominance. Although specialists have traditionally rendered this therapeutic procedure, in simple cases there is seldom need for extensive surgical procedures and therefore there is a clear need to introduce these studies in modern dental curricula. Implant therapy has evolved into an important part of daily dental practice. Appropriate knowledge of diagnostic and therapeutic options with dental implant therapy is, therefore, mandatory for dental students. The present consensus paper describes the theoretical knowledge as a foundation to the teaching of implant dentistry at the undergraduate level. Students need a solid basic knowledge about biological prerequisites and clinical procedures leading to successful implant treatment and, in particular, an understanding of the importance of embedding implants into the overall treatment concept. Among others this includes a...

This paper provides arguments for the introduction of implant dentistry into the undergraduate curriculum. The survival of teeth is very high when disease is diagnosed and treated properly and maintenance is taken care of. Nevertheless, tooth replacements by fixed and removable prostheses are highly prevalent. It is expected that dentists will face a dramatically increased need to care for elderly patients and partially edentulous patients. Hence, the demand for implant reconstructions will be substantial and more appropriately trained and competent health professionals will be needed. Increasing demands of the patient reg...

Implant dentistry is becoming increasingly important treatment alternative for the restoration of missing teeth, as patients expectations and demands increase. Furthermore, implant related complications such as peri-implantitis are presenting more frequently in the dental surgery. The aim of this paper is to present concept mapping as a tool for enhancing clinical dental education and develops the authors' argument for the use of concept mapping presented previously in the pages of this journal. Materials presented are based on data gathered from extensive observation of learning and teaching in a UK dental school, and upon a case study of student learning of removable partial denture design. Using examples developed with students and teachers, critical elements of the approach are illustrated which can be used to support dialogue between the two parties. We studied the students' acceptance and utilization of virtual patients (VPs) authored by faculty using the Web-SP system over two consecutive years. We also studied factors of importance for the utilization of VPs for self-assessment. They found the VPs engaging, realistic, fun to use, instructive and relevant to their course. Students used, on average, 9.68 VPs per course, which constitutes 43 percent of the available VPs. The number of VPs available seemed to be sufficient for the targ...
