Conclusions: The risk factor profiles and the work-up results are similar between the TIA and the stroke patients. These findings highlight the etiologic homogeneity of both conditions; therefore, justify their uniform management. In addition, low yield of CT in TIA patients was found, questioning thus the routine use of CT in work-up of TIA. (Source: European Journal of Neurology)

Conclusions: Our findings show that the H1 haplotype is a significant risk factor for PD. Conclusions: The association of increased CSF-NFL levels with increasing severity of WMLs in non-demented subjects suggests that NFL is a marker for axonal damage in response to small vessel disease in the brain. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that GIGYF2 mutations are not a frequent cause of PD in the Spanish population, since we found no clearly segregating variants. A clear pathogenic mutation in other gene at 2q36-37 in the PARK11-linked PD families would definitively disprove GIGYF2 as the responsible gene. (Source: European Journal of Neurology)

Conclusions: Though in the serum we did not find significant differences amongst the three groups, IGF-1 bioavailability, represented by the free IGF-1 levels, correlated with disease severity. In the CSF, the significant increment of the free fraction of IGF-1 suggests an up-regulation of the IGF-1 system in the intrathecal compartment of sALS patients. Since IGF-1 is a trophic factor for different tissues, we speculate that high levels of the free IGF-1 in sALS might reflect a physiological defensive mechanism promoted in response to neural degeneration and/or muscle atrophy. Conclusions: Increased level of MMPs and TIMP-1 of ALS patients may reflect the degeneration process of motor neurons and skeletal muscles and/or is associated with tissues remodeling. The low level of MMP-9 in CSF may result from impaired balance between MMP-9 and TIMP-1 and/or its increased intrathecal degradation and physical clearance. Although the role of changed MMPs/TIMPs level in the pathogenesis of ALS is not clear their analysis in serum may be used as prognostic factor and a potential marker for monitoring treatment effects.
