Does an overall job crafting dimension exist? A multidimensional item response theory analysis.
Job crafting is a multidimensional construct that can be conceptualized both at the general level and at the daily level. Several researchers have used aggregated scores across the dimensions of job crafting, to represent an overall job crafting construct. The purpose of the research presented herein is to investigate the factor structure of the general and daily versions of the job crafting scale developed by Petrou et al., (2012) (PJCS), using parametric multidimensional Item Response Theory (IRT) models. A sample of 675 employees working on different occupational sectors completed the Greek version of the scales. Result...

You can play the game without knowing the rules—But you’re better off knowing them: The influence of rule knowledge on figural matrices tests.
Due to their high item difficulties and excellent psychometric properties, construction-based figural matrices tasks are of particular interest when it comes to high-stakes testing. An important prerequisite is that test preparation—which is likely to occur in this context—does not impair test fairness or item properties. The goal of this study was to provide initial evidence concerning the influence of test preparation. We administered test items to a sample of N = 882 participants divided into two groups, but only one group was given information about the rules employed in the test items. The probability of solving t...

Validity of the Personal Suicide Stigma Questionnaire in a community sample.
This study examined the construct validity of the scale using a sample of participants from the general community who reported being suicidal at some point in their lives (N = 3,947). The Distress Questionnaire—5 and the Suicidal Ideation Attributes Scale were used to assess the severity of distress and suicidality. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) showed a three-factor model (Rejection, Minimization, Self-Blame) with one general Personal Stigma factor influencing the three first-order factors, which best fit the data. Scalar invariance was reached for both age and gender. The same factor structure was maintained when ...

The self-concept and identity measure in adolescents: Factor structure, measurement invariance, and associations with identity, personality traits, and borderline personality features.
Identity difficulties have been associated with various psychiatric conditions and are considered a central issue in personality pathology. Following the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders, measures of self- and interpersonal functioning have been developed. Although these measures were intended to be separate ratings of self-other deficits, only a global rating was obtained. Moreover, these measures fall short in bridging the gap between developmental and clinical identity work. To capture both adaptive and disturbed identity dimensions, Kaufman et al. (2015) developed the Self-Concept and Identity Measure (SCIM)...

The effects of cognitive load on strategy utilization in a forced-choice recognition memory performance validity test.
Despite the importance of detecting feigned cognitive impairment, we have a limited understanding of the theoretical foundation of the phenomenon and the factors that affect it. Studies regarding the formation and implementation of feigning strategies during neuropsychological assessments are numbered, though there are indications that they tax cognitive resources. The current study assessed the effect of cognitive load manipulation on feigning strategies. To achieve this aim, we utilized a 2 × 2 experimental design; condition (simulators/honest responders) and cognitive load (load/no load) were manipulated while particip...

Gender differences or gender bias? Examination of the assessment of sadistic personality using item response theory and differential item functioning.
Sadism, defined by the infliction of pain and suffering on others for pleasure or subjugation, has recently garnered substantial attention in the psychological research literature. The Assessment of Sadistic Personality (ASP) was developed to measure levels of everyday sadism and has been shown to possess excellent reliability and validity using classical test theory methods. However, it is not known how well ASP items discriminate between respondents of different trait levels, or which Likert categories are endorsed by persons of various trait levels. Additionally, individual items should be evaluated to ensure that men a...

French adaptation of the Coparenting Relationship Scale: A scale for the assessment of the interparental relationship.
We present in this article a French adaptation of the CRS. A total of 399 participants from the French-speaking part of Switzerland (146 fathers, 253 mothers) completed the questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the theoretically grounded seven-factor structure of the original instrument was valid to explain the structure of the Swiss data. Metric measurement invariance was achieved when comparing mothers and fathers, but only configural invariance was achieved when comparing the original US sample and the Swiss sample. Intercultural differences may possibly explain this result. Convergent validity was tes...

The structure of the Emotional Processing Scale (EPS-25): An exploratory structural equation modeling analysis using medical and community samples.
The Emotional Processing Scale (EPS) assesses emotional processing in terms of suppression, signs of unprocessed emotion, controllability of emotions, avoidance of emotional triggers, and impoverished emotional experience. Previous confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) yielded insufficient fit and questioned the EPS factors’ discriminant validity. The present study aimed to test unidimensional, five-factor, and bifactor models using exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) and CFA. We administered the scale to 350 Italian participants in good health and 346 gastrointestinal patients referred for endoscopy because of ...

Evolutions in testing research: What the future is likely to bring.
Talking among the two of us as an outgoing and incoming editor about what is called a “transition editorial” – a way to mark the passing of the torch from one editor to another – we have realized that we both tend to look in these moments to past and future. The recent past, to sum up, all the good that was made and all the ways in which European Journal of Psychological Assessment (EJPA) has contributed to the advancement of theory and practice in assessment, and the rather immediate future, in order to prepare for and anticipate all the exciting evolutions that are already visible and will likely influence our do...

Affect and personality: Ramifications of modeling (non-)directionality in dynamic network models.
The use of dynamic network models has grown in recent years. These models allow researchers to capture both lagged and contemporaneous effects in longitudinal data typically as variations, reformulations, or extensions of the standard vector autoregressive (VAR) models. To date, many of these dynamic networks have not been explicitly compared to one another. We compare three popular dynamic network approaches – GIMME, uSEM, and LASSO gVAR – in terms of their differences in modeling assumptions, estimation procedures, statistical properties based on a Monte Carlo simulation, and implications for affect and personality r...

Modularity of the personality network.
This study aims to explore the hierarchical modular structure of the personality network and the functional role of personality characteristics. A sample of 345,780 individuals (Mage = 24.99, SDage = 10.00; 59.18% female) that completed the International Personality Item Pool – NEO-120 in a previous study was reanalyzed. A non-regularized method was used to estimate the personality network and ModuLand was used to characterize its modular structure. Results revealed a modular structure comprising three levels: one level with the 120 personality characteristics, a second level with 35 modules, and a third with 9 modules. ...

Bayesian multivariate mixed-effects location scale modeling of longitudinal relations among affective traits, states, and physical activity.
We describe the fitted model, where we emphasize, with visualization, the richness of information provided by the M-MELSM. We demonstrate Bayesian hypothesis testing for the correlations between the random effects. We conclude by discussing limitations of the MELSM in general and extensions to the M-MELSM specifically for personality research. Playing with networks: Using video games as a psychological assessment tool.
Video gaming behavior may offer information about the players and the widespread diffusion of this form of entertainment produces a staggering amount of data about gaming behaviors. The aim of the current study was to investigate the possibility to use the information about the way the player acts and reacts in a competitive video game to assess personality traits inside the HEXACO space. Deep learning was used to train deep neural networks that classified a sample of players (N = 41) with different personality traits by how they play in a Massive Online Battle Arena (MOBA) video game. Results suggested that the likelihood...

That takes the BISCUIT: Predictive accuracy and parsimony of four statistical learning techniques in personality data, with data missingness conditions.
This study introduced a novel SL technique, BISCUIT (Best Items Scale that is Cross-validated, Unit-weighted, Informative, and Transparent). The predictive accuracy and parsimony of BISCUIT were compared with three established SL techniques (the lasso, elastic net, and random forest) and regression using two sets of scales, for five criteria, across five levels of data missingness. BISCUIT’s predictive accuracy was competitive with other SL techniques at higher levels of data missingness. BISCUIT most frequently produced the most parsimonious SL model. In terms of predictive accuracy, the elastic net and lasso dominated ...

Bottom up construction of a personality taxonomy.
In pursuit of a more systematic and comprehensive framework for personality assessment, we introduce procedures for assessing personality traits at the lowest level: nuances. We argue that constructing a personality taxonomy from the bottom up addresses some of the limitations of extant top-down assessment frameworks (e.g., the Big Five), including the opportunity to resolve confusion about the breadth and scope of traits at different levels of the organization, evaluate unique and reliable trait variance at the item level, and clarify jingle/jangle issues in personality assessment. With a focus on applications in survey m...
