Validation of Morality as Cooperation Questionnaire in Turkey, and its relation to prosociality, ideology, and resource scarcity.
The theory of morality as cooperation (MAC) argues that there are seven distinct and evolved universal moral foundations. Curry, Chesters, and Van Lissa (2019) developed a scale to test this theoretical approach and showed that the Relevance subscale of the MAC questionnaire (MAC-Q) fits data well, unlike the Judgment and full-form. However, an independent test of the validity of this questionnaire has not been hitherto conducted, and its relation with ideology is unknown. In the first study, we attempted to validate the Turkish form of MAC-Q and then examined the relationship with prosociality and political ideology. The ...

A multilevel multidimensional finite mixture item response model to cluster respondents and countries: The Forms of Self-Criticising/Attacking and Self-Reassuring Scale.
The aim of this study was to test the multilevel multidimensional finite mixture item response model of the Forms of Self-Criticising/Attacking and Self-Reassuring Scale (FSCRS) to cluster respondents and countries from 13 samples (N = 7,714) and from 12 countries. The practical goal was to learn how many discrete classes there are on the level of individuals (i.e., how many cut-offs are to be used) and countries (i.e., the magnitude of similarities and dissimilarities among them). We employed the multilevel multidimensional finite mixture approach which is based on an extended class of multidimensional latent class Item R...

Psychometric properties and prospective predictive utility of the contrast avoidance questionnaires.
Recent theoretical research posits that a key factor in the development and maintenance of pathological worry is the avoidance of sudden emotional shifts. Recently two self-report instruments were developed to index this phenomenon (Contrast Avoidance Questionnaire – Worry [CAQ-W] and Contrast Avoidance Questionnaire – General Emotion [CAQ-GE]). This work employed a multi-study design to provide an independent evaluation of the latent structure of these measures; additionally, the validity and longitudinal predictive ability of the measures was examined. Findings of the factor analytic work support a two-factor solutio...

Modeling self-determination theory motivation data by using unfolding IRT.
Self-determination theory (SDT) suggests that the degree of autonomous behavior regulation is a characteristic of distinct motivation types which thus can be ordered on the so-called Autonomy-Control Continuum (ACC). The present study employs an item response theory (IRT) model under the ideal point response/unfolding paradigm in order to model the response process to SDT motivation items in theoretical accordance with the ACC. Using data from two independent student samples (measuring SDT motivation for the academic subjects of Mathematics and German as a native language), it was found that an unfolding model exhibited a ...

Challenging the multidimensional conception of perceived person-environment fit: Are specific fit dimensions related to educational outcomes beyond a higher-order factor?
In the current study, we examined the viability of a multidimensional conception of perceived person-environment (P-E) fit in higher education. We introduce an optimized 12-item measure that distinguishes between four content dimensions of perceived P-E fit: interest-contents (I-C) fit, needs-supplies (N-S) fit, demands-abilities (D-A) fit, and values-culture (V-C) fit. The central aim of our study was to examine whether the relationships between different P-E fit dimensions and educational outcomes can be accounted for by a higher-order factor that captures the shared features of the four fit dimensions. Relying on a larg...

The Engagement/Disengagement in Sustainable Development Inventory (EDiSDI): Psychometric properties and validity-based studies.
There is an urgent need to meet the goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Such advancements require people to adopt pro sustainable development behaviors. Research on engagement with sustainable development has the potential to provide a vital understanding of how individual differences and contextual factors interact to shape such behaviors. Our aim was to offer a theoretical framework for engagement, imported from Educational Psychology, and from it develop the Engagement/Disengagement in Sustainable Development Inventory (EDiSDI). In Study 1 (n = 266; Mage = 38.6 years; 83% female), an explorato...

On the impact of the response options’ position on item difficulty in multiple-choice-items.
The multiple-choice item format is widely used in test construction and Large-Scale Assessment. So far, there has been little research on the impact of the position of the solution among the response options and the few existing results are even inconsistent. Since it would be an easy way to create parallel items for group setting by altering the response options, the influence of the response options’ position on item difficulty should be examined. The Linear Logistic Test Model (Fischer, 1972) was used to analyze the data of 829 students aged 8–20 years, who worked on general knowledge items. It was found that the po...

Generating codebooks to ensure the independent use of research data: Some guidelines.
Recently, the European Journal of Psychological Assessment (EJPA) has implemented practices that strongly encourage and support data sharing for any article accepted for publication at EJPA. An essential element of data sharing is the documentation of research data, that is, providing a codebook that allows independent researchers to interpret the data file without additional assistance. However, general standards on how to document data have not yet been developed. Here, we define the purpose of a codebook and showcase how a codebook could be formatted and which information could be included. Given that different research...

Introducing new open science practices at EJPA.
The Open Science movement aims to make scientific research open to all levels of society. As part of our ongoing process of improving the quality of science in an open and transparent way, we are excited to announce two new open science initiatives: (1) The adoption of Transparency and Openness Promotion (TOP) standards and (2) the awarding of badges for open practices. These practices take effect as of now and apply to all current and future manuscripts submitted to European Journal of Psychological Assessment (EJPA). We conclude by exploring the next steps for open science at EJPA. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2020 APA,...

Measuring self-control in international large-scale surveys: Development and validation of a four-item scale in English, French, German, Japanese, Polish, and Spanish.
Self-control – that is, the ability to control impulses, emotions, or actions in order to achieve goals – is associated with a broad range of positive life outcomes, such as educational attainment and health. The present study describes the development and validation of a four-item self-control scale in English, French, German, Japanese, Polish, and Spanish. We used a sample comprising 973 survey respondents from the United States to select the scale items, and a sample comprising 5,557 respondents from six countries to validate the short scale. Results suggest that with just four items, self-control can be measured in...

A new measure for the assessment of student–teacher connectedness in adolescence.
Student–teacher relationships have received a lot of attention in the social sciences. It is well-known that relationships with teachers tend to become more distant during adolescence, but most adolescents single out specific teachers they feel connected to. To better capture this latter phenomenon, the aim of this paper is to propose and evaluate the psychometric properties of a new measure for the assessment of student–teacher connectedness in adolescent samples from two countries. Samples consisted of 2,323 adolescents from England and 8,000 adolescents from Spain, who had answered a specific package of questions fo...

Validity and reliability of automatically generated propositional reasoning items: A multilingual study of the challenges of verbal item generation.
This study introduces a newly developed public-domain multilingual automatic item generator that creates propositional reasoning (PR) items belonging to 15 item families by using various inference rules. Psychometric properties of the resulting written PR test were investigated in three diverse samples in English, simplified Chinese, and German, respectively. Internal consistency was good to excellent across samples. The ICAR16 short form test of cognitive abilities (Condon & Revelle, 2014) was used to evaluate construct validity. Correlations of ICAR16 scores and PR scores were high. Furthermore, items within families app...

Validation of the Short Dark Triad in a German sample: Structure, nomological network, and an ultrashort version.
The structure, correlates, and assessment of the Dark Triad are widely discussed in several fields of psychology. Based on the German version of the Short Dark Triad (SDT), we add to this by (a) providing a competitive test of existing structural models, (b) testing the nomological network, and (c) proposing an ultrashort 9-item version of the SDT (uSDT). A sample of N = 969 participants provided data on the SDT and a range of further measures. Our competitive test of five structural models revealed that fit indices and nomological network assumptions were best met in a three-factor model, with separate factors for psychop...

Psychometric properties of the Generalized Pliance Questionnaire in Spain.
This study aimed to analyze the factor structure and psychometric properties of both GPQ versions in a Spanish online sample (N = 846). Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the one-factor model obtained an acceptable fit in the GPQ-18, but an inadequate fit in the GPQ-9. The GPQ-18 showed measurement invariance across gender, excellent internal consistency, and convergent construct validity. According to the results, the GPQ-18 showed good psychometric properties in Spanish samples. The persnickety pervasiveness of rating enhancement in personality assessment: The self, the other, and then again yet another.
The current paper explores whether self and observer reports of personality are properly viewed through a contrasting lens (as opposed to a more consonant framework). Specifically, we challenge the assumption that self-reports are more susceptible to certain forms of response bias than are informant reports. We do so by examining whether selves and observers are similarly or differently drawn to socially desirable and/or normative influences in personality assessment. Targets rated their own personalities and recommended another person to also do so along shared sets of items diversely contaminated with socially desirable ...
