The Scale of Positive and Negative Experience (SPANE): Evaluation of measurement invariance and convergent and discriminant validity.
The Scale of Positive and Negative Experience (SPANE) is a self-report questionnaire designed to assess positive and negative emotions. In Study 1 (N = 4,250, 61.95% females, Mage = 28.56 years), we evaluated measurement invariance of the SPANE across gender and age using moderated factor analysis. In Study 2 (N = 200, 52.5% females, Mage = 21.82 years), we investigated the convergent and discriminant validity of the SPANE by examining its associations with measures of well-being and religiosity. In Study 3 (N = 160, 87.5% females, Mage = 20.38 years), we used a prospective design to examine associations of the SPANE with ...

A psychometric evaluation of a reduced version of the PID-5 in clinical and non-clinical adolescents.
This study aimed to replicate and extend previous findings on the psychometric properties of this 100-item PID-5 relying on a non-clinical (N = 100) and a clinical (N = 101) sample of mid-adolescents, as well as a non-clinical (N = 218) and a clinical (N = 212) sample of late-adolescents. Results indicate that the psychometric properties of the 100-item PID-5 are adequate and similar to the original PID-5 in all samples. Our study provides evidence for extended applicability of the 100-item PID-5 for both clinical and non-clinical adolescents. The structure of work engagement: A test of psychometric properties of the Lithuanian version of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale.
The aim of this study was to validate the Lithuanian version of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-17), developed by Schaufeli and Bakker (2003), and the newly developed UWES-3 (Schaufeli et al., 2019). The data were derived from a sample of Lithuanian employees that was surveyed longitudinally. At Time 1, a total of 475 employees were surveyed. At Time 2, 166 employees completed the survey for a second time. Confirmatory factor analyses provided more support for unidimensional solution of the UWES-17. Moreover, the internal consistency of both versions was sufficiently high (α varied between .76 and .90), and the te...

The HEXACO-Middle School Inventory (MSI): A personality inventory for children and adolescents.
We developed and validated a novel measure, the 6-factor personality HEXACO-Middle School Inventory (MSI). We started with a pool of 16 items for each of the six dimensions of the HEXACO. In Study 1, we administered the HEXACO-MSI to 1,089 Italian children and the Observer version to their parents. Using principal component analyses (PCA) and extension factor analysis (EFA), we selected the best eight items for each dimension. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) confirmed the 6-factor dimensionality and its invariance. Internal consistency of each dimension was adequate. Convergent and divergent validity were successfully e...

The structure of conflict styles in adolescents: Psychometric properties of the adapted Rahim Organizational Conflict Style Inventory – II (ROCI-II).
This study examines the latent structure of the Rahim Organizational Conflict Inventory—II (ROCI-II) in several samples of secondary school students. Findings from earlier studies conducted in adult populations suggested that the instrument has a four- or five-factor structure; however, the exploratory factor analysis (EFA) in this study yielded a three-factor (integrating, dominating, avoiding) solution, with most of the items associated with a fourth factor (Obliging) failing to load as predicted. A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) replicated the three-factor solution satisfactorily. A multiple-group CFA indicated th...

The Learning-specific Inner Speech Scale (LISS): Development, predictive validity, and age differences.
Theory and research suggest that inner speech plays a prominent role in students’ learning. To facilitate research on inner speech within learning and academic contexts, we developed a Learning-specific Inner Speech Scale (LISS) used for assessing students spanning a broad range of ages. The LISS takes a functional view of inner speech, assessing the frequency of social-assessing, self-critical, self-reinforcing, and self-managing inner speech in the learning context. Data from three studies based on the child, adolescent, and young adult samples demonstrated that the LISS exhibits acceptable psychometric properties in t...

On the characteristics of sustained attention test performance: The role of the preview benefit.
Most psychometric tests assessing sustained attention are characterized by a specific presentation mode: Many items are presented simultaneously and the test takers are required to constantly process and react to them until the testing time is up. The aim of the present study was to look into two mechanisms that potentially underlie performance in these tests: The ability to focus on the currently relevant item and the ability to preprocess upcoming items to prepare for upcoming actions. In order to assess both abilities, the d2-R test of sustained attention was modified and its stimulus arrangement (single, blocks vs. row...

Not very powerful: The influence of negations and vague quantifiers on the psychometric properties of questionnaires.
Several guidelines on how to construct questionnaire items exist, even though the literature lacks empirical evidence for their effectiveness. To investigate whether the addition of negations and vague quantifiers worsens the psychometric properties of an established questionnaire, 872 participants completed one version of the Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS)—the German original, a negated version, a version with vague quantifiers or a version with both negations and vague quantifiers. Reliability estimates, item-total correlations, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) model fit, and fit to the Partial Credit ...

The Pathological Narcissism Inventory: Measurement invariance across Serbian and USA samples and further validation.
The aim of this research was to explore measurement invariance across samples from Serbia and the USA (Study 1) and to further validate the Serbian adaptation of the Pathological Narcissism Inventory—PNI (Study 2). The results supported the original seven-factor first-order structure as well as the hierarchical structure of the PNI with Narcissistic grandiosity and vulnerability as the second-order factors. Further, scalar invariance between the two versions of the PNI was achieved. Relations between Narcissistic grandiosity and vulnerability and other measures of grandiose and hypersensitive narcissism supported the val...

Psychometric evaluation of an episodic future thinking variant of the Autobiographical Memory Test—Episodic Future Thinking-Test (EFT-T).
Future-oriented variants of the Autobiographical Memory Test (AMT) are often used to assess the generation of specific episodic future thoughts, however, as yet the underlying factor structure of items in this modified test has not been examined. Therefore, over two studies we examined the factor structure and validity of an episodic future thinking variant of the Autobiographical Memory Test (Episodic Future Thinking-Test; EFT-T). In Study 1, exploratory factor analysis (N = 466) showed a one-factor structure underlying responses to positive, negative, and concrete noun cue words on the EFT-T. In Study 2, confirmatory fac...

Development and psychometric evaluation of the Questionnaire of ethical Leadership (QueL).
We examined the factor structure of QueL using Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis, along with measurement invariance techniques, using data from more than 1,200 leaders and subordinates working in Greece. Exploratory analysis indicated two latent highly-correlated factors that were labeled “Telos” and “Ethos.” Confirmatory analysis verified a bifactor solution. The bifactor QueL showed configural, metric, and scalar invariance across independent samples of leaders and subordinates. QueL was found to be a reliable measure across time and occupational groups (leaders and subordinates). We found criterion co...

Psychometric properties of the multifaceted Gender-Related Attributes Survey (GERAS).
Since the 1920s, psychologists have sought to assess the sex- and gender-related attributes of men and women, including primarily aspects of personality and focusing on positive characteristics. In this paper, we introduce a new questionnaire for assessing gender-related attributes with a broader approach than provided by previous ones. Therefore, the questionnaire includes (a) not only personality traits but also cognitions and interests and (b) not only positive but also negative and neutral characteristics. Two independent datasets were acquired (Study 1: N = 1,466; Study 2: N = 471) for development and psychometric ana...

Manipulate me: The cube construction task allows for a better manipulation of item difficulties than current cube rotation tasks.
The cube construction task represents a novel format in the assessment of spatial ability through mental cube rotation tasks. Instead of selecting the correct answer from several response options, respondents construct their own response in a computerized test environment, leading to a higher demand for spatial ability. In the present study with a sample of 146 German high-school students, we tested an approach to manipulate the item difficulties in order to create items with a greater difficulty range. Furthermore, we compared the cube task in a distractor-free and a distractor-based version while the item stems were held...

On the importance of educational tests.
Educational tests are an indispensable component in virtually all educational systems across the world for evaluating educational achievement. At the same time, they face regular backlash by teachers, policy makers, educationalists, and scientists alike. Sometimes they are even considered the enemy of good education. We build on this debate and provide explanations for these opposing views, where they come from, how they can be resolved, and, most importantly, how educational tests can be integrated as important tool for improving learning and instruction.
