The psychometric properties of the Scale of Retired Spousal Intrusion: Turkish women sampling.
This study examined the psychometric properties of Retired Spousal Intrusion Scale (SRSI). The calibration study was conducted with a sample of women (n = 687) whose husbands were retired, resulting in a one factor scale consisting of six items. Validation study, discriminant validity and test-retest were conducted in a second sample of women (n = 756) whose husbands were retired. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the unidimensional factor model had adequate fit with values x2/df = 4.61, GFI = .98, AGFI = .96, CFI = .96, RMSEA = .06, SRMR = .05. In addition, the correlation of the SRSI with conc...

A cross-national study on the psychometric quality of the Italian version of the Dutch Work Addiction Scale (DUWAS).
We investigated the psychometric properties of the Italian version of the Dutch Work Addiction Scale (DUWAS) by using an Italian sample (N = 1,027) and a comparable Dutch sample (N = 7,523). We first conducted multigroup confirmatory factor analysis and reliability analysis. We then examined the correlations of the DUWAS with job demands, work-family conflict, job-related affective well-being, and psychological and physical strain. Results showed that a two-factor solution of the DUWAS was equivalent across the Italian and Dutch samples, with data supporting factor variance and covariance equivalence in addition to metric ...

How performing PCA and CFA on the same data equals trouble: Overfitting in the assessment of internal structure and some editorial thoughts on it.
In this editorial, the authors note that The European Journal of Psychological Assessment regularly receives papers where a principal component analysis (PCA) or an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) is performed, followed by a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) on the same (or partially overlapping) data. On the one hand, the authors are thankful for these submissions as they simplify the often tedious editorial task, by providing good grounds for on-desk rejection (see also Greiff & Ziegler, 2017). But when such grounds for rejection are all too regularly employed, they may instill a feeling of unease in the editor. To co...

Multi-informant and multicultural advances in evidence-based assessment of students’ behavioral/emotional/social difficulties.
This article presents practical tools for evidence-based assessment of students’ behavioral/emotional/social difficulties and strengths in culturally sensitive ways. The assessment instruments obtain teacher, parent, and student ratings, plus observations in classrooms and other group settings, in interviews, and in testing sessions. To document differences in students’ functioning in school and other contexts, plus differences between teacher, parent, and student perspectives, users can display cross-informant comparisons of ratings of specific difficulties items. Users can also display cross-informant comparisons bet...

Callous-unemotional traits in children and adolescents: Psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the Inventory of Callous-Unemotional Traits.
The Inventory of Callous and Unemotional Traits (ICU) was developed to measure callous-unemotional (CU) psychopathic traits in children and adolescents. Studies that have examined the factor structure of ICU showed considerable controversy. The aim of this study was to examine the factor structure and psychometric proprieties of the Portuguese translation of the ICU. A total of 1,011 children and adolescents (495 boys and 516 girls), mean age of 13.36 years, participated in this study. Exploratory factor analysis produced two factors: uncaring and callousness; Cronbach’s α for each of the factor was .83 and .79 for the ...

Measurement invariance of a universal behavioral screener across samples from the USA and Germany.
The current study examines the item and scalar equivalence of an abbreviated school-based universal screener that was cross-culturally translated and adapted from English into German. The instrument was designed to assess student behavior problems that impact classroom learning. Participants were 1,346 K-6 grade students from the US (n = 390, Mage = 9.23, 38.5% female) and Germany (n = 956, Mage = 8.04, 40.1% female). Measurement invariance was tested by multigroup confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) across students from the US and Germany. Results support full scalar invariance between students from the US and Germany (df ...

Cross-informant disagreement on behavioral symptoms in adolescent attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and its impact on treatment effects.
This study compared parent, teacher, and adolescent ratings of ADHD and other behavioral symptoms in a sample of 114 adolescents with ADHD. Further, the effect of cross-informant disagreement (CID) on treatment outcomes was investigated in a subsample of 54 adolescents who had undergone a training and coaching intervention. Overall, there was moderate agreement among informants. Parent and adolescent ratings were more strongly correlated with each other than with teacher ratings. The strongest discrepancy was found between teacher and adolescent ratings on prosocial behavior. This discrepancy explained 12% of the variance ...

Do they rate in the same way? Testing of measurement invariance across parent and teacher SDQ ratings.
The internal structure of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) has been widely discussed in the literature. The first purpose of this study was, therefore, to analyze the internal structure of the SDQ as completed by German parents and teachers. Parents and teachers of 1,135 children between the ages of 3 and 6 years in German daycare facilities were asked to complete the SDQ. Using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), we found that the original five-factor model with added correlations between items with similar content and allowing cross-loads of reverse-worded items to the prosocial behavior factor is the m...

Why psychological assessment needs to start worrying about model fit.
The aims of this editorial are (1) to give some insights into the methodology (i.e., simulation studies) that is used to create knowledge on the behavior of goodness of fit (GoF) indices; (2) to provide a brief overview of what the gist of this research is; (3) to look ahead and discuss what authors can do about this when writing up their findings. The authors will not, however, discuss the statistical rationales of the various GoF indices since this is beyond the scope of this editorial. Interested readers should consult, for example, Mulaik (2009) for a detailed account. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights...

A continuous-time mixture latent-state-trait Markov model for experience sampling data: Application and evaluation.
In psychological research, statistical models of latent state-trait (LST) theory are popular for the analysis of longitudinal data. We identify several limitations of available models when applied to intensive longitudinal data with categorical observed and latent variables and inter- and intraindividually varying time intervals. As an extension of available LST models for categorical data, we describe a general mixed continuous-time LST model that is suitable for intensive longitudinal data with unobserved heterogeneity and individually varying time intervals. This model is illustrated by an application to momentary mood ...

On the definition of latent-state-trait models with autoregressive effects: Insights from LST-R theory.
In longitudinal studies with short time lags, classical models of latent state-trait (LST) theory that assume no carry-over effects between neighboring occasions of measurement are often inappropriate, and have to be extended by including autoregressive effects. The way in which autoregressive effects should be defined in LST models is still an open question. In a recently published revision of LST theory (LST-R theory), Steyer, Mayer, Geiser, and Cole (2015) stated that the trait-state-occasion (TSO) model (Cole, Martin, & Steiger, 2005), one of the most widely applied LST models with autoregressive effects, is not an LST...

A probit latent state IRT model with latent item-effect variables.
We present a probit latent state model for dichotomous items with one latent state variable for each occasion of measurement and one latent item-effect variable for each item, except for a reference item. All latent variables are well defined in terms of conditional probabilities. The model offers the possibility to include explanatory variables for the latent states as well as for the latent item-effect variables. We illustrate the model by a data example with the life satisfaction scale of the Freiburg Personality Inventory (FPI-R; Fahrenberg, Hampel, & Selg, 1984) assessed at three time points. Allowing for item-effect ...

Latent state-trait models for longitudinal family data: Investigating consistency in perceived support.
Support is key to healthy family functioning. Using the family social relations model (SRM), it has already been shown that variability in perceived support is mostly attributed to individual perceiver effects. Little is known, however, as to whether those effects are stable or occasion-specific. Several methods have been proposed within the structural equation modeling (SEM) framework for the investigation of hypotheses on stable and occasion-specific aspects of such psychological attributes. In this paper, we explore the applicability of different models for determining the consistency of SRM effects of perceived support...

The measurement of variability and change in life satisfaction: A comparison of single-item and multi-item instruments.
In many large-scale surveys, life satisfaction is measured with a single item. Little is known about how sensitive single-item instruments react to changes across time or in the face of critical life events. The present study draws on a Dutch sample of N = 4,034 participants who were administered three different single items and an established multi-item instrument at four annual surveys within 6 years. An indicator-specific latent state-trait growth model was employed to estimate the agreement in change coefficients for the different instruments. The results indicated that single items estimated a similar developmental de...
