Experiential avoidance as a common psychological process in European cultures.
Experiential avoidance, the tendency to rigidly escape or avoid private psychological experiences, represents one of the most prominent transdiagnostic psychological processes with a known role in a wide variety of psychological disorders and practical contexts. Experiential avoidance is argued to be based on a fundamental verbal/cognitive process: an overextension of verbal problem solving into the world within. Although cultures apparently differ in their patterns of emotional expression, to the extent that experiential avoidance is based on a fundamental verbal/cognitive process, measures of this process should be compa...

The structure of need fulfillment: Separating need satisfaction and dissatisfaction on between- and within-person level.
Self-Determination Theory predicts that fulfillment of the three psychological needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness predicts well-being. Fulfillment of these needs has long been considered a uni-dimensional construct consisting of need satisfaction and (reverse coded) need dissatisfaction. Recent research suggests that satisfaction and dissatisfaction should be separated. We tested whether need satisfaction and dissatisfaction can be distinguished psychometrically and whether they have unique effects in predicting well-being. We used data from a daily-diary study of 135 participants over the course of 42 days. A...

Development of the teacher attitudes towards Self-regulated Learning Scale.
We describe the development and validation of an instrument for measuring the affective component of primary school teachers’ attitudes towards self-regulated learning. The questionnaire assesses the affective component towards those cognitive and metacognitive strategies that are especially effective in primary school. In a first study (n = 230), the factor structure was verified via an exploratory factor analysis. A confirmatory factor analysis with data from a second study (n = 400) indicated that the theoretical factor structure is appropriate. A comparison with four alternative models identified the theoretically de...

Does the factor structure of the Brief COPE fit different types of traumatic events? A test of measurement invariance.
The current study aims to explore the likelihood of there being a higher-order factorial model of the Brief COPE (Carver, 1997) that is equally appropriate and valid for different traumatic groups (i.e., breast cancer patients and female flood survivors) at 3–4 months after the traumatic event. Both groups of participants include 180 survivors. Five factorial models for the Brief COPE were identified when reviewing the literature, and model comparisons were made by conducting confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs). The three dimensions of the Brief COPE posited by Litman (2006) and Gutiérrez, Peri, Torres, Caseras, and Val...

Psychometric properties of the Relational Self-Esteem scale in a community-based sample in China.
This study examines the psychometric properties of the Relational Self-Esteem scale (RSE; Du, King, & Chi, 2012) in a community sample in rural China. The RSE was developed to measure one’s sense of self-worth in relationships with significant others (i.e., family and friends). The study draws upon data from 754 rural residents (42.4% HIV-positive) in a county in central China with a high prevalence of HIV infection. Factor structure and measurement invariance were examined using confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs). Concurrent validity was tested by correlating the RSE with a set of previously developed measures of psych...
