Clarifying the factor structure of the Self-Compassion Scale: Nested comparisons of six confirmatory factor analysis models.
Self-compassion is associated with greater well-being and lower psychopathology. There are mixed findings regarding the factor structure and scoring of the Self-Compassion Scale (SCS). Using confirmatory factor analysis, we tested and conducted nested comparisons of six previously posited factor structures of the SCS. Participants were N = 1,158 Canadian undergraduates (72.8% women, 26.6% men, 0.6% non-binary; Mage = 19.0 years, SD = 2.3). Results best supported a two-factor hierarchical model with six lower-order factors. A general self-compassion factor was not supported at the higher- or lower-order levels; thus, a sing...

Thinking inconsistently: Development and validation of an instrument for assessing proneness to doublethink.
European Journal of Psychological Assessment, Vol 38(6), 2022, 463-475; doi:10.1027/1015-5759/a000645People tend to simultaneously accept mutually exclusive beliefs. If they are generally prone to tolerate inconsistencies, irrespective of their content, we say they are prone to doublethink. We developed a measure to capture individual differences in this tendency and demonstrated its construct and predictive validity across two studies. In Study 1, participants (N = 240) filled in the doublethink scale, the rational/intuitive inventory, and three measures of conspiratorial beliefs (conspiracy mentality, belief in specific ...

Open-source personality trait norms for the United Kingdom and Ireland.
European Journal of Psychological Assessment, Vol 38(6), 2022, 432-439; doi:10.1027/1015-5759/a000644Most copyrighted personality inventories facilitate norm-referencing through illustrative tables, yet their application to the many fields relevant to personality measurement is constrained by the need for stakeholders to possess the requisite financial resources to access them. Using an IPIP-NEO-300 dataset from Johnson’s IPIP-NEO data repository, we created open-source norm tables for different age groups (14–17 years; 18–25 years; and 30+ years) within a combined standardization sample from the United Kingdom (UK) ...

Tomayto, tomahto? An empirical comparison and integration of job crafting perspectives.
Although job crafting finds widespread application as a leading approach to bottom-up work design, the foundation of the construct is rather shaky: two different theoretical perspectives exist within the research field that have largely been treated separately. An empirical examination of their congruency is missing so far, threatening construct validity, the informative value of the emerging literature, and comparability of effects in practice. In two studies, we investigated the comparability and possible integrative approaches for the two perspectives, including different versions of existing measurement instruments. Ou...

The Perceived Occupational Stress Scale: A brief tool for measuring workers’ perceptions of stress at work.
This article aims to present the development and test the psychometric properties of the Perceived Occupational Stress (POS) scale, a new brief instrument aimed at rating a worker’s perception of feeling stressed at work. Six studies are conducted on an overall sample of 1,805 Italian workers, to examine both the construct and concurrent validity of the POS scale. The results demonstrate the high internal consistency (α = .82) and test-retest reliability (r = .86) of the POS scale, as well as its structural validity and concurrent validity with the Maslach Burnout Inventory (r = .68 with Emotional Exhaustion) and the Ef...

Planning a career in psychological assessment: Lessons learned from the EAPA Winter School 2021.
Two aims that are explicitly formulated in the mission statement of the European Association of Psychological Assessment (EAPA) are to “promote the interest of young professionals and scientists in the science of psychological assessment” and to “create opportunities for scientific exchange about psychological assessment.” In an effort to address these goals, EAPA held its first-ever Winter School bringing early career researchers (ECRs) and experts together. The school was hosted by the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg on May 7, 2021 (online due to the pandemic situation). In this Editorial, we highlight ...

Proximity of items does not necessarily affect their correlation: Two failed replications of item proximity effect.
In this paper, we attempted to detect the effect of provided answers on those that succeed them, the “item proximity effect,” within a questionnaire with randomized item order for each respondent. In two studies, we administered personality inventories to two samples of mostly undergraduate students, consisting of 742 and 205 respondents, respectively. We expected to see a strong item proximity effect that quickly diminishes with higher item distances, but we found no evidence of such effect in the data. Thus, we failed to conceptually replicate the findings of previous studies. After discussing the probable causes for...

Development of short and ultra-short forms of the Multidimensional Self-Esteem Scale: Relations to the Big Five, narcissism, and academic achievement in adults and adolescents.
The multidimensional assessment of self-esteem plays an important role in self-esteem research. In this article, we present the development of a short form and an ultra-short form of the Multidimensional Self-Esteem Scale (MSES; Schütz et al., 2016). Items were selected by eliminating redundant items and by using a deterministic search algorithm in a sample of 644 adults (Mage = 47.0). Construct validity was established by investigating the relations between each MSES short form and other constructs and cross-validating the factor structure of both short forms of the MSES in 674 adolescents (Mage = 14.2) and in 425 adults...

Using differential item functioning to analyze the domain generality of a common scientific reasoning test.
This study applied three recently developed methods of analyzing differential item functioning (DIF) to evaluate the domain generality assumption of a common scientific reasoning test. Additionally, we evaluated the usefulness of these new, tree- and lasso-based, methods to analyze DIF and compared them with methods based on classical test theory. We gave the scientific reasoning test to 507 university students majoring in physics, biology, or medicine. All three DIF analysis methods indicated a domain bias present in about one-third of the items, mostly benefiting biology students. We did not find this bias by using metho...

The Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitments Scale (U-MICS): Psychometric properties of its adaptation to the religious domain of identity.
The current study proposed the adaptation of the Utrecht-Management of Identity Commitments Scale (U-MICS) to the religious domain as an instrument to measure both individuals’ religious identity formation processes (when a variable-centered approach is adopted) and religious identity statuses (when a person-centered approach is adopted). The scale has been tested on a sample of 727 Italian participants aged 13–65 years, by collecting evidence of score structure, convergent, and criterion-related validity. Regarding the score structure validity, we confirmed that religious identity formation consists of three processes...

Establishing the psychometric properties of the self-report Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale for Children and Adolescents in a general population adolescent sample.
The Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale for Children and Adolescents (LSAS-CA) is a valid and reliable clinician-administered measure of social anxiety symptoms in young people. It has been adapted for self-report completion, and although the psychometric properties of this version of the scale have been examined in Spanish, Hebrew, and French language versions, this has not yet been done for the English language version. In the present study, we examined the factor structure and psychometric properties of the self-report version of the scale (LSAS-CA-SR) in a sample of UK adolescents recruited from schools. The factor structur...
