Improving the measurement of “Big Five” personality traits in a brief survey instrument.
The Ten Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) is the leading brief instrument for the “Big Five” personality measurement. However, TIPI’s design has suboptimal features: agree-disagree response options, numeric instead of verbal response labels, and multiple items per page. This paper presents a version of TIPI that addresses these problems. Using two nationally representative sample surveys, we compare the original and revised TIPIs on several dimensions: completion time, item nonresponse, paired item reliability, and validity based on relations to other variables. Completion time is the same and item nonresponse rates ...

Validation of a German and English version of the revised Art-of-Living Inventory.
It is an important goal for many people to achieve happiness or well-being. Research has shown the effects of various stand-alone strategies to increase well-being. However, it is unclear whether multiple strategies can enhance happiness. Art-of-living is defined as a combination of the most important strategies that lead to well-being. Based on philosophical theory and empirical studies, 11 strategy components have been identified. A basic questionnaire, the Art-of-Living Inventory (AOLI), which aims to measure these strategies, was validated in a German-speaking sample (n = 1,302) and an English-speaking sample (n = 2,16...

On consequential validity.
In this editorial the authors propose that test developers and other researchers embrace their responsibility for supple mentary facets of a test and generate substantive research in these understudied areas. To this end, through this edi torial, the authors raise awareness of the understudied topic of con sequential validity. In European Journal of Psychological Assessment, they explicitly welcome empirical studies on aspects of consequential validity, addressing for example: (1) report development; (2) feedback on test scores; (3) individual consequences of testing; and (4) social consequences of testing. All these quest...

It works without words: A nonlinguistic ability test of perceiving emotions with job-related consequences.
Emotion recognition ability of emotions expressed by other people (ERA-O) can be important for job performance, leadership, bargaining, and career success. Traditional personnel assessment tools of this ability, however, are contaminated by linguistic skills. In a time of global work migration, more and more people speak a language at work that is not their mother tongue. Consequently, we developed and validated the Face-Based Emotion Matching Test (FEMT), a nonlinguistic objective test of ERA-O in gainfully employed adults. We demonstrate the FEMT’s validity with psychological constructs (cognitive and emotional intelli...

The Day Evaluation Q-Sort.
The Day Evaluation Q-sort (DEQ) is a measure designed to describe the day as it is experienced. In two undergraduate samples (Ns = 472 and 302), this research explores how the day is described, and how the evaluation of the day relates to personality attributes and to time spent in various daily activities. We find that individuals tend to describe their days as generally positive and productive, and that day evaluations are related to psychological attributes (Big Five traits, affect, and well-being) and time use. Day evaluations are not simply a reflection of the activities that make up the day. Two people spending their...

Development and validation of the Perceived Societal Marginalization Scale.
Current societal conflicts are characterized by identity struggles and discontent concerning globalization and modernization. While the literature identifies several psychological determinants of this discontent, systematic measurement approaches based on well-defined constructs are rare. Here, we present the development and validation of the Perceived Societal Marginalization (PSM) scale, which aims to assess individual differences in people’s subjective perceptions of the insignificance and lack of recognition of their own social groups in the domains of economy, culture, and politics. We first provide a definition of ...

Development of a 50-item abridged form of the Junior Spanish version of the NEO questionnaire (JS NEO-A50).
The aim of this psychometric study was to construct an abridged 50-item form, 10 for each of the five factors of personality, of the Junior Spanish version of the NEO-PI-R (JS NEO-A50). Two separate studies were conducted. In Study 1, 400 high school students completed two personality scales to examine the factor structure (exploratory factor analysis), convergent validity, and reliability of the JS NEO-A50. In Study 2, an independent sample of 385 adolescents completed the JS NEO-A50 and several outcome measures to replicate the factor structure (exploratory structural equation model) and examine criterion validity, respe...

Dispositional greed scales.
We report two studies (N₁ = 300, N₂ = 1,000) on the comparative psychometric properties of these scales. We find that all scales are reliable and that they correlate highly, suggesting that all can be used to assess dispositional greed. Exploratory factor analyses, using the Empirical Kaiser Criterion, the Hull method, and Parallel Analysis as extraction methods, were done on the separate scales and all items together. These analyses reveal that there is quite some consistency in the scales, as in both studies a one-factor solution seems to describe the data best. These results imply that these different scales all ass...

Not only reliability! The importance of the ecological validity of the Math Anxiety Questionnaire for Adults.
The measurement of math anxiety in adults is justified based on observations that math anxiety in parents and teachers predicts children’s math anxiety and achievement. Although there are many very good math anxiety measures intended for children and adolescents, their usefulness (e.g., AMAS, MARS) for adults is debatable. The most important objection against using these scales for adults is their ecological validity. The measurement of anxiety associated with math tests, classes, teachers, and homework is adequate for students of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), but not for students of social sc...

It’s all about power: Validation of trait and state versions of the German Personal Sense of Power Scale.
The present research was aimed at providing a German version of the Personal Sense of Power Scale (GPSPS; Anderson et al., 2012) and testing its psychometric properties. A personal sense of power describes the perception of one’s ability to influence others. Probably every human relationship can be characterized by differences in power, which means that the measurement of experienced power is highly relevant. The availability of appropriate measures in different languages will help improve research and cross-cultural comparisons. Five studies were conducted. Internal consistency was high across all studies. Stability acr...

Psychometric validation of a parent-reported measure of childhood alexithymia: The Alexithymia Questionnaire for Children – Parent (AQC-P).
Alexithymia can be defined as difficulties in describing one’s emotions and is of interest within clinical and developmental psychology as a potential mediating and exacerbating factor across multiple forms of psychopathology. Measuring alexithymia via self-reports can be challenging, as those with heightened alexithymia may have difficulties in recognizing their alexithymia traits due to impaired metacognitive skills. Thus, there would be considerable benefits to the availability of a psychometrically validated parent-reported alexithymia measure that may circumvent the issue of self-reports. We, therefore, examined the...

Cross-cultural comparison of the Benign and Malicious Envy Scale (BeMaS) across Serbian and US samples and further validation.
The aim of this research was to validate the dual conception of envy in Serbian culture, measured by the Benign and Malicious Envy Scale (BeMaS). In Study 1 (N = 404), the results confirmed cross-cultural invariance of the Malicious Envy scale across Serbian and US samples, with the US sample obtaining higher scores. However, two items in the Benign Envy scale showed significant differential item functioning across samples. Nonetheless, both scales in Serbian showed adequate measurement precision (information) and the expected distinction in relations with narcissistic admiration, narcissistic rivalry, and self-esteem, wit...

Supporting academic freedom and living societal responsibility: The role of authors, reviewers, and editors in the publication process at EJPA.
In this editorial, we outline our current vision on how aca demic freedom and academic responsibility need to both be considered and weighed against each other in a sensible and careful way by editors, authors, reviewers, and readers of EJPA. We will also outline how we adapt the submission and publication process in our journal toward ensuring a balance between academic freedom and academic responsi bility – based on the notion that psychological assessment plays an important role in psychological research and beyond, and has the potential to inform decision-making, not only for individuals but also in larger contexts (...
