Pharmacists and GPs complement each other – Keith Ridge
Dr Keith Ridge CBE, the Chief Pharmaceutical Officer for NHS England, gives his views on best practice in action: One of the privileges of my job is being able to get out and about to see great clinical practice up close. Last week was one of those opportunities arose when, together with the Chief Executive of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, Helen Gordon, I spent an enthralling few hours at the Old School Surgery in Fishponds, Bristol. It’s a modern GP practice with a growing list of 15,000 situated in the heart of the local community. Two things make the practice a bit different from the norm. Firstly, an independen...

Policy paper: Mental Capacity Act: government response to the House of Lords Select Committee report
The government, together with our partners, has closely considered the 39 recommendations of the House of Lords. It has also reviewed inputs and insights received from our discussions with a wide range of stakeholders. This response sets out a system-wide programme of work over 2014 to 2015 and beyond that we believe will make a real improvement to the implementation of the Mental Capacity Act. The new Congenital Heart Disease review: 25th update – John Holden
Your feedback From time to time we are challenged as to whether the review has a pre-determined outcome. Some think we have already decided that one or more units have to close, and that we know which ones. Others think that we have already decided that no units will close, come what may. The truth is that nothing is decided yet, but I do understand that in the absence of a simple clear cut decision, everyone will have a view. I recently exchanged correspondence with a national charity on this point and I enclose the exchange here so you can see how I have replied. Another comment that we have heard recently is: this is a...

Chief Scientific Officer bulletin: June 2014
Publications gateway number: 01694 Professor Sue Hill OBE, Chief Scientific Officer One of the determining features of any profession is its commitment to professionalism and standards. We know from a series of reports into the NHS, including Francis, Keogh, Berwick and Barnes, that professional expertise alone is not sufficient to ensure we deliver good care. It is not just about what we do, but how we do our work that matters. This is why the 6C’s initiative is being rolled out across all the professional groups of the NHS and Healthcare Scientists should embrace this wholeheartedly. Whether working in a patient facing...

Let’s continue the patient revolution (in Basingstoke)! – Emily Carter
Emily Carter, Regional Head of Patient and Public Voice (South), NHS England. We are opening the doors of NHS England’s Patients and Information Directorate to the public (and anybody else who wants to find out more about what we are doing) on 17 June, with four simultaneous and web-linked events across the country. In the south, we are meeting in Basingstoke and having a focus on our work to drive transparency and participation in general practice. General practice is a critical lynchpin in people’s healthcare – not to mention the front door for most people accessing NHS care. Change is coming to general practice an...
