Biomechanical evaluation and comparison of polyetheretherketone rod system to  traditional titanium rod fixation on adjacent levels
Conclusion In comparison with rigid fixation, some potential advantages of using PEEK rod systems include a reduced stress on adjacent segment disc and facet joint, and the elastic ability of PEEK rod fixation allows for a greater range of motion, which may reduce the incidence of clinical complications seen with rigid fusion devices. The clinical significance of rapid prototyping technique in complex spinal deformity surgery —Case sharing and literature review
In this study, we intend to share our experience with the RP technique in pediatric spine deformity cases and to provide a literature review. In our study, two patients with severe spinal deformity were included. A real-size spinal model was produced for each patient on the basis of contiguous computer tomography with a slice thickness of 1 mm. All models were used to plan the resection and to identify the anatomic landmarks during the operation. With the aid of these full-scale spinal models, all surgical procedures were performed exactly according to the preoperative plan. A 16-year-old girl with congenital scoliosis wi...

Acute shoulder infection following acupuncture —A report of three cases
We present three cases who developed severe infection following acupuncture, leading to irreversible osteoarthritic changes in their glenohumeral joints. All of them mentioned a history of acupuncture therapy before their shoulder became swollen and hot and no other infection source could be detected. Possible explanations included: (1) breakdown of the sterile technique; (2) no consensus of acupoint or how deep the needle should be inserted; (3) patient’s comorbidities, such as diabetes mellitus or previous shoulder pathology, were not considered. Although these three patients underwent debridement and proper management...

Pseudotumor formation following large-diameter metal-on-metal total hip arthroplasty —Report of two cases and literature review
We report two cases of this complication. Case 1 exhibited cystic change with fluid accumulation, and in Case 2 a semisolid mass was found. In Case 1, a high inclination angle of the cup (at 65°) was noted. In Case 2, the cup was placed at a normal inclination angle, but it was too anteverted (31°). The histopathological studies revealed that the cystic pseudotumor had more diffuse lymphocyte infiltration and perivascular lymphocyte cuffing with eosinophil and plasma cells. The semisolid mass of Case 2 had less lymphocyte infiltration. Both cases had metal debris with foreign body granuloma. In patients with residual gro...

Anterior single-screw fixation in 24 patients with Type II odontoid fractures
Conclusions Anterior single-screw fixation is an effective and safe surgical approach for patients with Type II odontoid fractures. A satisfactory long-term outcome depends upon careful selection of patients for fracture orientation and attention to the technical aspects of surgery. Myositis ossificans circumscripta in the psoas muscle with femoral neuropathy
Publication date: February 2013 Source:Formosan Journal of Musculoskeletal Disorders, Volume 4, Issue 1 Author(s): Kun-Tsan Lee , Yu-Min Lin , Cheng-Hung Lee , Kui-Chou Huang Myositis ossificans circumscripta is a benign, self-limiting, ossifying soft-tissue mass that typically occurs in skeletal muscle of the extremities after trauma. Occurrence in the psoas muscle is rare with no reports of this condition presenting as femoral neuropathy. A 54-year-old woman visited our hospital because of progressive left leg pain and weakness, which she had experienced for 2 years. Physical examination indicated left femoral ne...

An unusual case of neglected bilateral isolated aplasia of the patella in a 21-year-old patient: A case report
Publication date: February 2013 Source:Formosan Journal of Musculoskeletal Disorders, Volume 4, Issue 1 Author(s): Cuneyd Gunay , Hakan Atalar Isolated absence of the patella is an extremely rare condition. Absence or hypoplasia of the patella is usually associated with genetic disorders and lower limb malformations. In this paper, an isolated absence of the patella without any other deformities is described. A 21-year-old male patient referred to our clinic presented with walking difficulty in the past 6 months and deformity of both knees. Except for these complaints, he had no problems. Isolated aplasia of the pate...

Polyanhydride copolymer and bioceramic composites as bone substitutes
Conclusion The research team synthesized polyanhydride/g-HAP composites with high mechanical strength, slow degradation, and excellent biocompatibility. The result showed that a CPH/SA ratio of 7:3 in combination with 10 wt% g-HAP was optimal as bone substitute. (Source: Formosan Journal of Musculoskeletal Disorders)

Isolated medial ray dislocation at the naviculocuneiform joint with intra-articular navicular and secondary metatarsal head fractures
Publication date: May 2013 Source:Formosan Journal of Musculoskeletal Disorders, Volume 4, Issue 2 Author(s): Chih-Chun Yu , Chi-Wen Chen , Huaan-Min Chiu Medial dislocation of the first ray at the naviculocuneiform joint is a relatively unusual injury. Early diagnosis and expeditious treatment, by closed or open reduction with transarticular stabilization, are necessary for recovery of normal function. Here, we report a case of medial ray dislocation at the naviculocuneiform joint with intra-articular navicular and secondary metatarsal head fractures in a 22-year-old man, caused by a stumble when running with the r...

Common peroneal nerve palsy as a postoperative complication in lateral meniscus repair
Publication date: May 2013 Source:Formosan Journal of Musculoskeletal Disorders, Volume 4, Issue 2 Author(s): Chung-Ping Liao , Hung-Maan Lee , Jui-Tien Shih , Sheng-Tsai Hung Arthroscopic lateral meniscus repair using an inside-out technique can potentially be hazardous to the common peroneal nerve. This is true even for a longitudinal incision posterior to the posterior border of the iliotibial band, which allows visualization of the lateral joint capsule. A 37-year-old woman presented with common peroneal nerve dysfunction after an arthroscopic lateral meniscus repair using this technique. After confirmation of ...
