The role of ESAT-6 in tuberculosis immunopathology
Despite major global efforts to eliminate tuberculosis, which is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb), this disease remains as a major plague of humanity. Several factors associated with the host and Mtb interaction favor the infection establishment and/or determine disease progression. The Early Secreted Antigenic Target 6 kDa (ESAT-6) is one of the most important and well-studied mycobacterial virulence factors. This molecule has been described to play an important role in the development of tuberculosis-associated pathology by subverting crucial components of the host immune responses. This review highlights the m...

Association between dietary flavonoid intake and hypertension among U.S. adults
ConclusionOur study found a negative association between the prevalence of hypertension and moderate total anthocyanins intake and total flavan-3-ols intake. Our study provides evidence from a population-based study for a negative association between dietary flavonoid intake and the prevalence of hypertension. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

C-reactive protein-complement factor H axis as a biomarker of activity in early and intermediate age-related macular degeneration
ConclusionIntermediate AMD was associated in our cohort with decreased serum FH levels together with increased serum mCRP/FH ratio. All these objective serum biomarkers may suggest an underlying systemic inflammatory process in early/intermediate AMD patients. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

Case report: A successful clinical experience of transplantation of liver and kidney from a donor with myelodysplastic syndromes
This report provides support for the careful use of marginal donors. With effective treatment and full peer assessment, livers and kidneys from donors with a past history of MDS may be safely transplanted. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

Coupled scRNA-seq and Bulk-seq reveal the role of HMMR in hepatocellular carcinoma
ConclusionThe results of the present study show that HMMR could play a role in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatments of patients with HCC based on bulk RNA-seq and scRAN-seq analyses and is a promising molecular marker for HCC. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

Whole genome sequencing of recombinant viruses obtained from co-infection and superinfection of Vero cells with modified vaccinia virus ankara vectored influenza vaccine and a naturally occurring cowpox virus
In this study, we selected the putative recombinant viruses and performed genomic characterization of these viruses. Some putative recombinant viruses displayed plaque morphology distinct of that of the parental viruses. Our analysis demonstrated that they had mosaic genomes of different lengths. The recombinant viruses, with a genome more similar to MVA-HANP (>50%), rescued deleted and/or fragmented genes in MVA and gained new host ranges genes. Our analysis also revealed that some MVA-HANP contained a partially deleted transgene expression cassette and one recombinant virus contained part of the transgene expression c...

Early B cell transcriptomic markers of measles-specific humoral immunity following a 3rd dose of MMR vaccine
In conclusion, our study identified genes/pathways linked to antigen-induced B cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, and clonal selection, that are associated with, and impact measles virus-specific humoral immunity after MMR vaccination. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

Boosting the immunogenicity of the CoronaVac SARS-CoV-2 inactivated vaccine with Huoxiang Suling Shuanghua Decoction: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study
ConclusionOral HSSD boosts the immunogenicity of the CVS vaccine in young and adult individuals. This trial provides clinical reference for evaluation of TCM immunomodulators to improve the immune response to COVID-19 vaccines. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

CD8+ T cells are necessary for improved sepsis survival induced by CD28 agonism in immunologically experienced mice
DiscussionTaken together, these results indicate that CD28 agonism in immunologically experienced mice effectively suppresses inflammation via a CD8+-dependent mechanism to decrease mortality during sepsis. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

Nlrp2 deletion ameliorates kidney damage in a mouse model of cystinosis
Cystinosis is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the CTNS gene that encodes cystinosin, a ubiquitous lysosomal cystine/H+ antiporter. The hallmark of the disease is progressive accumulation of cystine and cystine crystals in virtually all tissues. At the kidney level, human cystinosis is characterized by the development of renal Fanconi syndrome and progressive glomerular and interstitial damage leading to end-stage kidney disease in the second or third decade of life. The exact molecular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of renal disease in cystinosis are incompletely elucidated. We have prev...

Immune response profiles from humans experimentally exposed to Phlebotomus duboscqi bites
DiscussionOur results demonstrate that humans mounted a local and systemic immune response against P. duboscqi salivary proteins. Specifically, PduM02/SP15-like and PduM73/adenosine deaminase recombinant salivary proteins triggered a Th1 type immune response that might be considered in future development of a potential Leishmania vaccine. The lack of PPAR α exacerbated the progression of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis in mice with spleen deficiency syndrome by triggering an inflammatory response
ConclusionThe abnormal NR signaling accelerated the vicious cycle between lipotoxicity and inflammatory response in NAFLD with SD. Our results provide new evidence for nuclear receptors as potential therapeutic targets for NAFLD with spleen deficiency. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

Immune system-related plasma extracellular vesicles in healthy aging
ConclusionEndo-EV and exo-EV cytokines function as different biomarkers. The observed healthy aging EV phenotype reflected a downregulation of EV fibrinogen subpopulations consistent with the absence of a pro-coagulant and pro-inflammatory condition common with age-related disease.
