Cuproptosis in glioblastoma: unveiling a novel prognostic model and therapeutic potential
Glioblastoma, a notably aggressive brain tumor, is characterized by a brief survival period and resistance to conventional therapeutic approaches. With the recent identification of “Cuproptosis,” a copper-dependent apoptosis mechanism, this study aimed to explore its role in glioblastoma prognosis and potential therapeutic implications. A comprehensive methodology was employed, starting with the identification and analysis of 65 cuproptosis-related genes. These genes were subjected to differential expression analyses between glioblastoma tissues and normal counterparts. A novel metric, the “CP-score,” was devised t...

Incidence of second primary cancers in patients with retinoblastoma: a systematic review and meta-analysis
DiscussionThe findings of this review indicate that hereditary Rb patients have a significantly elevated risk of developing SPCs, whereas nonhereditary Rb patients do not show the same risk. Furthermore, significant differences were observed in the SIRs of different SPC types. Treatment techniques, specifically chemotherapy and radiation therapy, were associated with an increased risk of SPCs among hereditary Rb patients. These findings highlight the importance of radiation protection for Rb patients and the need for further research and tailored management strategies for this high-risk population. CD20+ T cells in monoclonal B cell lymphocytosis and chronic lymphocytic leukemia: frequency, phenotype and association with disease progression
IntroductionIn monoclonal B cell lymphocytosis (MBL) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), the expansion of malignant B cells disrupts the normal homeostasis and interactions between B cells and T cells, leading to immune dysregulation. CD20+ T cells are a subpopulation of T cells that appear to be involved in autoimmune diseases and cancer.MethodsHere, we quantified and phenotypically characterized CD20+ T cells from MBL subjects and CLL patients using flow cytometry and correlated our findings with the B-cell receptor mutational status and other features of the disease. Results and discussionCD20+ T cells were more rep...

Case report: detection of multiple sporadic gastrointestinal stromal tumors by dual-time 18 F-FDG PET/CT
Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most common mesenchymal tumors affecting the gastrointestinal tract. Typically, GISTs are solitary; however, in rare cases, they may be multiple and appear in one or more organs. Multiple GISTs can appear in familial GISTs, children, or certain tumor syndromes such as neurofibromatosis type 1, Carney syndrome, and Carney-Stratakis syndrome. However, the diagnosis of primary multiple sporadic GISTs is often more difficult than that of these diseases. Herein, we report a case of multiple primary sporadic GISTs in a 64-year-old man, affecting the abdominal cavity and retroperito...

Case report: when art is faced with brain surgery: acute change in creative style in a painter after glioma resection
ConclusionThis is the first report of acute modification of the painting style following frontal lobectomy for a low-grade glioma, supporting that brain resective surgery may impact creativity. While neglected for many decades, this complex human ability should be evaluated more regularly in neurosurgical practice, particularly in artists. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

Effects of prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics on the prevention and treatment of cervical cancer: Mexican consensus and recommendations
This article summarizes the current scientific evidence on the effects of supplementation with prebiotics, probiotics, and synbiotics on high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, precancerous lesions, and various stages of cervical cancer development and treatment while also examining the underlying molecular pathways involved. Our findings indicate that a higher dietary fiber intake is associated with a reduced risk of HPV infection, while certain probiotics have shown promising results in clearing HPV-related lesions. Additionally, certain strains of probiotics, prebiotics such as inulin and fructo-oligosaccharide...

Feasibility of an MR-based digital specimen for tongue cancer resection specimens: a novel approach for margin evaluation
ConclusionThis proof of concept for volumetric assessment of resection margins using MR-DSs, demonstrates promising potential for further development. Overall, sensitivity is higher than specificity for inadequate margin detection, because of the radiologist’s tendency to overestimate tumor size. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

Case report: Primary sarcoma of the mandible with a novel SLMAP-BRAF fusion
Primary sarcomas of the jaw are very rare tumor with unclear mechanism of tumorigenesis. Identification of genetic alterations contributes to better understanding of tumorigenesis and extension of tumor spectrum, as well as potential therapeutic targets application. Herein, we firstly report a case of primary sarcoma in the mandible with novel SLMAP-BRAF fusion. Morphologically, the tumor was composed of histiocyte-like cells, larger epithelioid cells, spindle cells and osteoclast-like giant cells with moderate atypia. Focally, it mimicked tenosynovial giant cell tumor or biphasic synovial sarcoma, and even giant cell tumo...

FusionVAC22_01: a phase I clinical trial evaluating a DNAJB1-PRKACA fusion transcript-based peptide vaccine combined with immune checkpoint inhibition for fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma and other tumor entities carrying the oncogenic driver fusion
The DNAJB1-PRKACA fusion transcript was identified as the oncogenic driver of tumor pathogenesis in fibrolamellar hepatocellular carcinoma (FL-HCC), also known as fibrolamellar carcinoma (FLC), as well as in other tumor entities, thus representing a broad target for novel treatment in multiple cancer entities. FL-HCC is a rare primary liver tumor with a 5-year survival rate of only 45%, which typically affects young patients with no underlying primary liver disease. Surgical resection is the only curative treatment option if no metastases are present at diagnosis. There is no standard of care for systemic therapy. Peptide-...

Barriers to cervical cancer prevention in a safety net clinic: gaps in HPV vaccine provider recommendation and series completion among Ob/Gyn patients
ConclusionOur study demonstrated that many patients never had a provider discuss HPV vaccination with them and never received the HPV vaccine. Additionally, amongst those who did initiate HPV vaccination, completion of the series remains a key barrier. Ensuring that providers discuss HPV vaccination and that patients receive HPV vaccines, along with expanding access to and convenience of HPV vaccination are critical aspects of preventing cervical cancer. Optimal response to tislelizumab plus chemotherapy in metastatic triple-negative breast cancer: a case report and literature review
Metastatic triple-negative breast cancer (mTNBC) has the worst prognosis among breast cancer subtypes. Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) plus chemotherapy have promising survival benefits. Herein, we report a 51-year-old woman whose metastatic lesions were diagnosed as triple-negative subtype and who received tislelizumab plus eribulin treatment and achieved excellent efficacy. To our knowledge, this study is the first attempt to present tislelizumab in combination with eribulin for mTNBC treatment. New treatments resulting in prolonged survival and durable clinical responses would benefit mTNBC patients. Then, we summar...
