Long-term effects of a COMPASS program on the caregiving journey: 1-year follow-up in a randomized controlled trial
Conclusion: This study supports providing COMPASS programs to obtain long-term benefits for family caregivers of LTC recipients. Potential approaches that could optimize the long-term benefits of the COMPASS program include supporting caregivers to participate in arts-related hobbies and maintaining follow-up telephone calls after program completion. Blood Biomarkers for Healthy Aging
Measuring the abundance of biological molecules and their chemical modifications in blood and tissues has been the cornerstone of research and medical diagnoses for decades. Although the number and variety of molecules that can be measured have expanded exponentially, the blood biomarkers routinely assessed in medical practice remain limited to a few dozen, which have not substantially changed over the last 30-40 years. The discovery of novel biomarkers would allow, for example, risk stratification or monitoring of disease progression or the effectiveness of treatments and interventions, improving clinical practice in myri...

Leisure Activities, Genetic Risk, and Frailty: Evidence from the Chinese Adults Aged 80 Years or Older
Conclusion: Evidence is presented for the independent association of leisure activities and genetic risk with frailty. Engagement in leisure activities suggested to be associated with lower risk of frailty across all levels of genetic risk among adults aged ≥ 80 years. (Source: Gerontology)

The role of brain integrity in the association between occupational complexity and cognitive performance in subjects with increased risk of dementia
Conclusion: Among individuals at-risk for dementia, occupational complexity does not seem to contribute towards resilience agains t neuropathology. These exploratory findings require validation in larger populations. (Source: Gerontology)

Aging with HIV: Working to Ensure Equity and Inclusion
Due to effective anti-retroviral therapy (ART), the people with HIV are aging, and this is observed globally wherever ART is readily available. While this represents the success of HIV treatment, those aging with HIV face several health challenges that emphasize the importance of access to health care and health equity. These challenges include changes to the immune system, chronic inflammation, and higher rates of multimorbidity at younger ages compared to people without HIV. Intersectional identities impact health care access and health equity and include age, sexual orientation, gender identity, race/ethnicity, socioeco...

Caregiver Involvement and Concerns with Care of Residents of Assisted Living Before and During the COVID-19 Pandemic
Conclusions Restricted in-person visiting disrupted resident care and was associated with worse perceptions of resident health and wellbeing. Continued caregiver involvement in resident care and communication with caregive rs even during lockdowns is key to mitigating these issues. (Source: Gerontology)

Prevalence and Risk Score for Hypertonic Dehydration Among Community-Dwelling Older Adults: an Analysis of the Bangkok Falls Study
Conclusion: One-third of the older adults in this study had current or impending HD. We identified risk factors for HD and created a risk score for HD in one group of community-dwelling older adults. Older adults with r isk scores of 1-4 were at 7.4%-32.8% risk for current HD. The clinical utility of this risk score requires further study and external validation. (Source: Gerontology)

Suitability of Goal Attainment Scaling in Older Adult Populations with Neurodegenerative Disease Experiencing Cognitive Impairment: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
This study conducted a systematic review to evaluate the suitability of GAS as an outcome measure for older adult populations with neurodegenerative disease experiencing dementia or cognitive impairment, based on responsiveness. Methods: The review was registered with PROSPERO and performed by searching ten electronic scientific databases (PubMed, Medline OVID, CINAHL, Cochrane, Embase, Web of Science, PsychINFO, Scopus, OTSeeker, RehabDATA) and four registries (Clinicaltrials.gov, Grey Literature Report, Mednar, Open Gre y). A summary measure of responsiveness (post-intervention minus pre-intervention mean GAS T-score) ...

Depression trajectories, genetic risk, and cognitive performance in older adults: multilevel model with a 10-year longitudinal cohort
Conclusion: Among older participants with European ancestry, even a mild-depression trajectory was associated with worse cognitive performance. Early intervention in participants with any degree of depression mig ht benefit regarding preventing cognitive performance decline. (Source: Gerontology)

Comparing the Effects of Two Perturbation-based Balance Training Paradigms in Fall-prone Older Adults: A Randomized Controlled Trial
This study aimed to compare both program's feasibility and effectiveness in fall-prone older adults. Methods In this three-armed randomized controlled trial, seventy-one older adults (74.9 ± 6.0 years) with a verified fall risk were randomly assigned into three groups: PBTtreadmill on a motorized treadmill, PBTstability using unstable conditions such as balance pads and a passive control group (CG). In both intervention groups, participants conducted a 6-weeks intervention with 3 ses sions per week. Effects were assessed in fall risk (Brief-BEST), balance ability (Stepping Threshold Test, Center of Pressure, Limits of S...
