Expression of hypoxia inducible factor-1 alpha (HIF-1 & #945;) in oral squamous cell carcinoma and its correlation with neoangiogenesis and 3-year survival from the disease.
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. OSCC falls into a larger category known as head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCCs). This collection constitutes all squamous cell carcinomas of the oral cavity, larynx, pharynx and oesophagus of which OSCC is the most common. Cancer cells involve morphological cellular transformation, dysregulation of apoptosis, uncontrolled cellular proliferation, invasion, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Also, one of the hallmarks of cancer is the elevated uptake of glucose even under normal oxygen conditions, known as aerobic glycolysis or the & ldquo;W...

Iatrogenic Horner ’s syndrome with abducent nerve paralysis after cervical schwannoma excision.
Horner & rsquo;s syndrome usually occurs after surgical intervention around carotid artery. A complete intracranial course of abducent nerve prevents its injury during neck surgery. We encountered an unusual complication in a 31-year-old female who underwent schwannoma excision under general anaesthesia. Patient developed Horner & rsquo;s syndrome and lateral rectus palsy in immediate post-operative period. Post-operative investigations did not reveal any abnormality in abducent nerve. Patient was managed conservatively and improved. We believe that either both neural injuries occurred independently or cautery may have cau...

Primary non-Hodgkin ’s B cell lymphoma of the thyroid gland: A rare entity.
The clinical and pathologic spectrum of lymphoproliferative disorders affecting the thyroid gland is diverse. The aim of the article is to present a case of primary malignant lymphoma of thyroid, which is relatively uncommon representing less than 5% of all thyroid malignancies. The majority of thyroid lymphomas are diffuse large cell of B-cell origin. A 65 year female & nbsp; presented with diffuse enlargement of thyroid gland since 20 days. There was no pain or difficulty in swallowing. Cytological findings were suggestive of malignant round cell tumor with closest resemblance to non- Hodgkins lymphoma. On trucut biopsy,...

Rapid recurrence and poor prognosis with altered levels of & #946;-catenin in 3 cases of head and neck Squamous cell carcinoma patients.
We report 3 cases which had considerably higher levels of & beta;-catenin and had rapid recurrence within 3 months, 6 months and 15 months respectively followed by very poor prognosis and death. We speculate presence of resistant cells and higher levels of & beta;-catenin as one of the important prognostic markers for recurrence and therapeutic resistance. (Source: Head and Neck Oncology)

Expression of Epstein-Barr virus-encoded BamH1 –a rightward transcript 7 microRNA in nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells modulates the responsiveness to irradiation treatment.
& nbsp; Introduction Nasopharyngeal carcinoma is highly sensitive to irradiation treatment. Expression of Epstein-Barr virus gene products affects the radiosensitivity of these cancer cells. In this paper, the association between the Epstein-Barr virus-encoded BamH1-a rightward transcript 7 microRNA (e bv-miR-BART7) and the effects on irradiation sensitivity was explored. Methods Ebv-miR-BART7 expression level in the tissue was quantified using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The radiosensitivity of nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells with ebv-miR-BART7 expression was evaluated by colony formation as...

Identification of high-risk human papillomaviruse (HPV-16 & 18) infection by multiplex PCR (MPX-PCR) and its expression in oral sub mucous fibrosis and oral squamous cell carcinoma.
This study concluded that multiplex PCR (MPX-PCR) could be helpful for quick screening of HR-HPVs and it is highly convenient, simple and cost-effective tool for large scale multi-institutional study for developing countries. (Source: Head and Neck Oncology)

High HIF-1 & #945; expression genotypes increase odds ratio of oral cancer.
Conclusions: In conclusion, ou r study demonstrated that the T and A alleles of C1772T and G1790A polymorphisms of the HIF-1 & alpha; gene increased the risk of ED and OSCC. C1772T and G1790A polymorphisms of the HIF-1 & alpha; gene had differing patterns of allelic imbalance in the precancerous lesions and subsequent carcinoma, suggesting a complex genetic pattern of progression from dysplasia to carcinoma. These findings suggest an additional role for HIF-1 & alpha; in OSCC development. Further studies are necessary to elucidate the HIF-1 & alpha; pathway in carcinogenesis, which would facilitate the development of novel...

Re-irradiation in Head & Neck cases using IMRT technique: a retrospective study with toxicity and survival report.
Conclusion: The IMRT technique allows the re-irradiation with safety and tolerated toxicity. However, future prospective studies of these approaches with much more patients are warranted. (Source: Head and Neck Oncology)

High hypoxia-inducible factor-1 & #945; expression genotype associated with Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
Conclusions: In conclusion, our study demonstrated that the C1772T and polymorphism of the HIF-1 & alpha; gene are associated with poor ECOG-PS. Our data suggests that the presence of the TT genotype in HNSCC individuals might contribute to the higher clinical aggressiveness of malignant disease. Such findings may have implications for interruptions in the disease process and modifications in treatment regiments. (Source: Head and Neck Oncology)

Cred é A, Locher M, Bredell M. Tongue cancer in young patients: case report of a 26-year-old patient. Head Neck Oncol. 2012 May 14;4(1):20.
This article presents the case of a 26-year-old woman with tongue cancer. The median age at the diagnosis of the tongue & rsquo;s cancer is 61 & thinsp;years. Only approximately 2% of patients are diagnosed before the age of 35. Case presentation Our patient survived acute myeloid leukemia (AML) before her second year. She had been having recurrent, poorly healing aphtae on the right side of the tongue for a period of months before the symptoms of the tongue cancer appeared. As a treatment a partial glossectomy was con ducted on the right side and a neck dissection of levels I-III. Than a reconstruction of the tongue ...
