The Wound Technology Network, a Hollywood, Fla.-based network of physicians, is using wireless services and mobile devices to provide better care to chronic wound patients in south Florida and southern California.
The WTN is using a tele-management center to help physicians diagnose and treat wound patients. Through the use of telemedicine, information technology and an evidence-based approach to care, officials said, the group looks to reduce the cost of care to patients and provide the same quality of care in the patient’s home. CIPA, based in Buffalo, selected electronic medical record and practice management software from Westborough, Mass.-based eClinicalWorks for its network of ambulatory care offices and select community physicians. The organization purchased 150 licenses.

The National Library of Medicine has published a draft map linking content from SNOMED Clinical Terms to ICD-9-CM billing codes, as a precursor to the development of similar maps.
The map aims to support administrative reporting and reimbursement functions where SNOMED CT is the terminology for clinical descriptive purposes, said Betsy Humphreys, NLM deputy director.
The draft consists of about 5,000 mappings of the SNOMED CT terms most commonly used by Kaiser Permanente and the University of Nebraska. (Source: Healthcare IT News)

The first public comment period for the Certification Commission for Health Information Technology's 2011 development cycle is open through Dec. 11.
The CCHIT will accept comments on the first draft of criteria for behavioral health electronic health records – both stand-alone and as an optional add-on to comprehensive ambulatory EHR certification – as well as add-on certifications for clinical research and dermatology.

A study of the Grey Bruce Health Network's Order Set project, which used standardized, Web-based order sets, shows improvements in the length of stay, ordering of best practices and reduced readmissions.
The project began in March 2007 when Toronto-based GBHN partnered with the Open Source Order Set Network (OSOS) to standardize and improve care in the network's 11 hospitals. To ensure the best patient care, he said, information exchange must reach every nook and cranny of the healthcare system.

The National Quality Forum has released a new quality data set, a common technological framework for defining clinical data necessary to measure performance and accelerate improvement in patients' quality of care.
According to NQF officials, the QDS framework provides a standardized set of data that should be captured in patients' electronic health records and is applicable to all care settings a patient is likely to use in his or her lifetime. (Source: Healthcare IT News)

The University of Colorado Hospital has implemented several new IT solutions to help clinical and administrative staff deal with business and workflow problems.

A recent survey of healthcare organizations found that 94 percent aren't ready to comply with the privacy and security provision of the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act, which take effect next February.

The National Institute of Health has awarded a $1 million grant to Houston's Rice University and the Texas Heart Institute to continue research on how to make MRIs more sensitive with the use of nanotechnology.

Google launches flu shot finder

Google has launched an online map service designed to provide U.S. consumers with the nearest locations for receiving seasonal and H1N1 vaccines.
Google developed the flu shot finder through a collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, their flu.gov collaborators and the American Lung Association.
The service is live at google.com/flushot, and officials say it will shortly be available on www.flu.gov and the American Lung Association Web site. (Source: Healthcare IT News)

The Veterans Health Information Systems and Technology Architecture-Foundations Modernization (VistA-FM) program, designed to transition the agency to electronic medical records, is behind schedule and over budget, according to the Government Accountability Office.
