What factors are effective on the CPR duration of patients under extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation: a single-center retrospective study
ConclusionThese findings suggest that age, SOFA score, comorbidities, OHCA, collapse-to-CPR time, and initial shockable rhythm are important factors influencing the duration of CPR in patients undergoing ECPR. Understanding these factors can help healthcare providers better predict and manage CPR duration, potentially improving patient outcomes. Further research is warranted to validate these findings and explore additional factors that may impact CPR duration in this population. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

From symptom onset to ED departure: understanding the acute care chain for patients with undifferentiated complaints: a prospective observational study
ConclusionDutch ED patients with undifferentiated complaints consulted a healthcare provider in over half of the cases before their ED visit. The median time in ACC is 5.5  h of which 40% is spent in the prehospital phase. Those referred by a GP and to pulmonology had a longer, and those in the evening a shorter time in ACC. The acute care journey starts hours before patients arrive at the ED and 6 days of complaints precede this journey. This timeframe could serve a s a window of opportunity to optimise care. Randomized controlled open-label trial to evaluate prioritization software for the secondary triage of patients in the pediatric emergency department
ConclusionThe patients ’ total LOS was not significantly shorter on days of intervention. However, use of the electronic patient prioritization tool was associated with significant decreases in some important time intervals during care in the pediatric ED.ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT05994196Trial registration number: NCT05994196.Date of registration: August 16th, 2023 (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

Screening for harmful substance use in emergency departments: a systematic review
ConclusionsSix screening tools demonstrated both sensitivities and specificities  ≥ 83% for detecting alcohol abuse/dependence in EDs. Tools with the highest sensitivities (AUDIT ≥ 8; RAPS ≥ 1) and that prioritize simplicity and efficiency (SASQ) should be prioritized. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

Bibliometric analysis of ChatGPT in medicine
ConclusionChatGPT ’s presence in medical literature is growing rapidly across various specialties, but concerns related to safety, privacy, and accuracy persist. More research is needed to assess its suitability for patient care and implications for non-medical use. Skepticism and thorough review of research are es sential, as current studies may face retraction as more information emerges. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

The state of emergency medicine in Greece: at critical momentum
AbstractGreece is a parliamentary republic in southeastern Europe populated by over 10 million permanent residents: 9 million reside on the mainland, with almost 4 million in the greater Athens area. The remaining 1 million populate the over 1200 Greek islands. In addition, more than 160,000 asylum-seekers reached Greece in 2022, and more than 25 million tourists have visited Greece in the last two years. Modern Greek Emergency Medicine (EM) is now in its 4th decade. The Greek government has focused the last few years on enhancing the quality of emergency services provided in public hospitals. Emergency Departments (EDs) a...

Clinical significance of elevated D-dimer in emergency department patients: a retrospective single-center analysis
ConclusionThis is the first paper to identify multiple causes of elevated D-dimer levels in Saudi Arabia population within the ED and it clearly highlights their accurate and diagnostic values. These findings draw attention to the importance of considering the specific clinical context and utilizing additional diagnostic tools when evaluating patients with elevated D-dimer levels. Single intravenous dose ondansetron induces QT prolongation in adult emergency department patients: a prospective observational study
ConclusionsOur study demonstrates the predictive capacity of QT0, QTc0, and ondansetron dosage in forecasting QTc60 prolongation (>  480 msec) post-ondansetron administration. These findings advocate for their incorporation into clinical protocols to enhance safety monitoring in adult ED patients. (Source: International Journal of Emergency Medicine)

Natto (fermented soybeans)-induced anaphylaxis in a surfer with the possibility of sensitization to poly( γ-glutamic acid) from cutaneous exposure to jellyfish sting: a case report
ConclusionsThe major allergen that induces natto allergy is poly( γ-glutamic acid) (PGA), which is present in its mucilage. Given that PGA is also produced by jellyfish tentacles, it can be inferred that the PGA sensitization occurred via dermal exposure to jellyfish PGA. This is an example of a food allergy induced by animal stings. As PGA is a high-molecular-we ight polymer, natto allergy, despite being IgE-mediated, often presents with late-onset anaphylaxis, which typically develops half a day after digestion. PGA has a wide range of applications in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and foods. Patients may develop allergic ...
