A New Medical Modelemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
The present period of medical advances may be regarded as a paradigm shift in concepts of health and disease. There is inevitably a transition where the “old” paradigm is in conflict with the “new.” Each depends upon the disease model that is in vogue at the time that it was conceived. The present model, accepted by the majority of physicians, as well as their patients, depends simply on “killing the enemy,” the attacking agent. This arose, as has been endlessly emphasized, from the discovery of microorganisms. It led naturally to the antibiotic era after the discovery of penicillin. The paradigm shift that is ...

Systemic distribution of the ubiquitous enteric fungus, Candida albicans (C Alb) may require less opportunism than had previously been considered. High enteric levels of C Alb have demonstrated the ability to spill-over in significant numbers into the host's peripheral circulation. It has also been established that C Alb can shed its characteristic cell wall and vary its cell-surface immunogens. Such abilities may enable this microbe to camouflage its identity from the host's immunity and permit proliferation into the systemic circulation as non-transients. The aging of the nervous system is not fully understood, but defects in mitochondrial energy production, originating in mitochondrial DNA mutations, have been implicated, along with neurotransmitter deficiencies and excitotoxic mechanisms. Molecules involved in energy metabolism, such as NADH, acetyl-L-carnitine, ubiquinone, and lipoic acid, are potentially therapeutic. Various natural and synthetic Pharmaceuticals can retard senility by influencing neurotransmitters, modulating NMDA-receptor mechanisms, enhancing circulation and metabolism, acting as antioxidants, and in other ways. Certain Pharmaceuticals, including mecl...

Effects of an Oral Vitamin B12 Formulation on AIDS-Related Neuropathy and Other Symptoms: A Pilot Studyemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
In a preliminary uncontrolled trial, an oral vitamin B12 formulation (cyanocobalamin aminolate, trade name CobamaxTM) containing 600 µg vitamin B12 per day was administered to a small cohort of HIV + individuals, most of whom had been previously diagnosed with AIDS. Responses to a set of self-rated questionnaires suggested that the vitamin formulation was remarkably effective in moderating or resolving a broad range of AIDS-related symptoms, including fatigue, depression, night sweats, oral thrush, fevers, diminished appetite, gastrointestinal distress, impaired memory and concentration, pain in general and peripheral neu...

A Food Allergy Study Utilizing the EAV Acupuncture Techniqueemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
Six diagnostic measures were performed on 30 volunteers. Five of the six diagnostic measures are currently utilized procedures for allergy, namely history and food challenge, skin, RAST, and IgE tests. The sixth and new method is based upon Electroacupuncture According to Voll (EAV). Results showed that the EAV test evidences a high degree of compatibility with the other five, particularly the food challenge test. As a new, noninvasive but sensitive test, it was found to be quite promising. This study employed several measures that collectively would provide evidence of burden levels of xenobiotic agents and abnormal liver detoxication processes. These included:1)Glucaric Acid Analysis, 2)blood analyses for identification of specific xenobiotic agents, and 3)Comprehensive Liver Detoxification Evaluation. Kolmogorov-Smirnov testing for a chi-square and Normal distribution for the Glucaric Acid findings indicates that each of these distributions is significantly different from expected distributions (p < .01). It is most noteworthy that of the 20 cases examined for this study,100% of the cases showed liver detox...

A Metabolic Disorder Similar to Acute Cardiac Beriberiemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
A case report is described of a child whose clinical course imitated that of the peracute form of cardiac beriberi known as Shoshin. The nature of the disorder, certain symptoms of which started in infancy, was such that it strongly indicated a metabolic rather than a nutritional etiology, involving energy metabolism. Because autopsy was refused by the parents, it was not possible to study the exact nature of the pathology. Thus, no particular known disease label could be attached. The case illustrates, however, the use of a nutrient supplement approach even in a life threatening disease by using knowledge derived from the...

The Role of Specific Olfactory Stimulation in Appetite Suppression and Weight Lossemail this articleEmail this article to a colleague. save this article to My ClippingsSave this article to My Clippings. discuss this articleDiscuss or comment on this article.
This study tests the hypothesis that inhalation of specially formulated, positive-hedonic scents can function in the acute regulation of appetite and contribute to satiety. We also test the hypothesis that the inhalation of positive hedonic scents can lead to sustained weight loss. Our study conclusively proves in a randomized, controlled, double-blind fashion that the inhalation of specially formulated scents are effective in appetite reduction, squelching food cravings and weight loss without any conscious dieting or exercising.
