Oxidative stress is associated with increased arterial stiffness in middle-aged and elderly community-dwelling persons
Publication date: Available online 29 June 2016 Source:Journal of Clinical Gerontology and Geriatrics Author(s): Ryuichi Kawamoto, Daisuke Ninomiyax, Tomo Kusunoki, Yoshihisa Kasai, Nobuyuki Ohtsuka, Teru Kumagi Background/Purpose Oxidative stress is thought to be involved in the development of vascular dysfunction. Arterial stiffness is one of the most significant manifestations of aging and vascular disease. We investigated whether increased malondialdehyde-modified low-density lipoprotein (MDA-LDL), which is responsible for oxidative stress, was associated with increased arterial stiffness, independent of confou...

Diversified psychiatric presentation in a case of progressive supranuclear palsy
Publication date: Available online 1 July 2016 Source:Journal of Clinical Gerontology and Geriatrics Author(s): Yu-Wen Chiu, Shwu-Hua Lee, Tu-Hsueh Yeh Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is an unusual neurodegenerative disorder with variant clinical phenotypes. Accurate diagnosis is challenging in the early stage, especially in psychiatric clinics, where misdiagnoses with psychiatric illness are common. A case of PSP was difficult to differentiate from other Parkinsonian syndromes initially, and the patient's affective symptoms predated the onset of other symptoms. Gaze abnormality and frontal lobe syndromes emerged...

Impact of serum magnesium levels in critically ill elderly patients —A study in a rural teaching hospital
Conclusion Hypomagnesemia was associated with a slightly higher mortality rate. Requirement and duration of ventilatory support were also higher, although not statistically significant. Hypomagnesemia was not found to have any impact on the duration of medical intensive care unit stay. Monitoring of serum magnesium levels may have prognostic and perhaps therapeutic implications in the elderly. (Source: Journal of Clinical Gerontology and Geriatrics)

Five items differentiate mild to severe dementia from normal to minimal cognitive impairment —Using the Global Deterioration Scale
Conclusion We anticipate that our abridged GDS, composed of five items, will facilitate a rapid, yet effective assessment of patients in primary care centers. Its use will benefit both patients and medical professionals by minimizing the length of time required to conduct the assessment, and by allowing early diagnosis and care of patients. However, further research with a larger population is required to verify its efficacy. (Source: Journal of Clinical Gerontology and Geriatrics)

Falls in people prior to undergoing total hip or total knee replacement surgery: Frequency and associated factors
Conclusion Falls are common in the 12 months preceding total hip or knee surgery. A number of factors are associated with risk of multiple falls and with joint disease severity. Strategies to reduce falls risk should be a priority in the year preceding lower limb joint surgery to optimize presurgery and postsurgery outcomes. Successful treatment with rituximab of a very elderly patient with refractory thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura
Publication date: Available online 4 May 2016 Source:Journal of Clinical Gerontology and Geriatrics Author(s): Go Saito, Takakazu Higuchi, Ryosuke Koyamada, Sadamu Okada An 89-year-old man presented with multiple cerebral infarction, and subsequently, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP) was diagnosed. He was treated with plasma exchange (PEX), however, despite the initial response, he was refractory to PEX. The addition of rituximab led to a sustained complete response. This case presents the oldest known reported TTP patient treated with rituximab and shows that rituximab can be administered successfully...
